About this project
Say hello to your desk’s best friend
The Nesl is an open-ended desk organizer that is fun and easy to use. It gives you the creative freedom to customize your workspace. Traditional desk organizers don’t offer enough flexibility and are overly compartmentalized. The modern desk space demands an adaptable organizer that works as well as it looks. How it works
Simply set the Nesl on your desk and place an item in between the pliable fingers. The rubber fingers will shift to fit small items such as pens, pencils, business cards, narwhals, zombies, monkeys, and whatever else you desire. The suction cups on the bottom allow you stick it to smooth surfaces like your desk or window, giving the Nesl even more utility. You can also use it as a cord stop, and cell phone dock. Check out the video to see the Nesl in action.
Good Things Come In Pairs
A single Nesl set consists of 2 units in exclusive Kickstarter colors, Black and Green (These colors will only be available on Kickstarter). Have them separated on different parts of your desk or linked together for a larger organizer. The strength of the Nesl is its ability to adapt to any environment and to accommodate a large variety of objects. With the easy to use tab system on the bottom of each unit, you can easily change and realign units, as you see fit.
Behind the scenes
As a result of many brainstorming sessions, we came up with a great idea. We would refine, again and again through sketching, 3D modeling, and prototyping. Sketching allowed us to quickly generate ideas and forms. We then moved into 3D modeling programs like Rhino and Solidworks to find the best proportions. Physical prototypes were then made to test functionality and to find the perfect material, texture, durometer, and color. The current pictures you see are of our final prototypes. We also did product testing with friends, colleagues, and design professionals to get as much user feedback as possible.
Made in the USA
As design students in the heart of Cleveland, we believe in its rich history of industry and manufacturing. This is why Nesl is designed in Cleveland and will be made in Cleveland.
Over the past few months we’ve made many contacts with local manufacturers to give you the best quality product. The Nesl is a single molded unit, made up of a durable rubber polymer. This is why we need your help. We have spent countless hours of our time designing and developing this product, but we don’t have the funds for the up front costs of production like mold cost, material cost, Kickstarter/Amazon fees, shipping, etc. If you help us with this part of the project you will not only be getting the best organizer ever, but you will also know you helped three students bring their design to life.
Our story begins in Cleveland. Birdhouse Studios is a design collective made up of three design students from the Cleveland Institute of Art. We are classmates, and more importantly, friends who love design. So, we decided to put our heads together to design a creative solution to a problem we face everyday, desk organization.
Utilizing what we’ve learned from our studio projects, internships, and freelance work, we knew we were ready to take on this challenge. The task involved taking a product from conception, to your hands. It’s very rare to see our concepts become a reality, so this was our main goal. With that in mind, Kickstarter was the perfect vehicle to launch our project. Using every resource available to us, we were able to bring you a beautifully designed solution to an everyday problem.
We hope you enjoyed our little video, and the product we’ve designed. Please check out our pledges, and get your desk a new best friend.
...and more Thanks!
Birdhouse Studios would like to give a big warm hearted thank you hug to all the people that have helped us to this point. We couldn't have done this without you. So thanks to all of our friends and faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Bob Immerman of InterDesign, Adrian Slattery of Interface Design, Design Concepts Inc, Pure Adapt Inc, Jeff Waffle, Mr. Bear, the local manufacturers of Cleveland, and to everyone who has given us support, thank you.
