For the past 15 summers, good people have been gathering at Birdfest to celebrate music, community, and great living. And it's been quite a run. Birdfest may have started out as a fun little homegrown party with a couple of bands on a flatbed trailer, but now it has grown up to become one of South Carolina's premier music festivals. And we're very proud of that.
However, as our little homegrown festival has grown (and grown and grown), we've started to feel the strain, financially speaking. As it turns out, our little paradise just isn't economically sustainable. So, in order to keep this improbable, magical festival going, we're changing things up this year. We're calling on our great Birdfest community, and the world, to band together and MAKE THIS FESTIVAL HAPPEN. We currently do not have enough money in the bank to make Birdfest 2017 happen. Not even close. So this Kickstarter campaign (along with our Corporate Sponsorship Push) has become our best idea to help everybody help us do what it takes to make sure Birdfest lives to see another year.
It takes a lot of money to pay our great musicians every year, and a lot of money to support the infrastructure that keeps Birdfest safe and comfortable for everybody. And yet we still feel compelled to keep our admission price very low, so that just about anybody can afford to bring their family out to enjoy a great music festival. Furthermore, we believe in giving back to the community, and Birdfest profits made over the years have gone to various groups helping to make South Carolina a better place. As you can see, not the best business model. But we didn't start Birdfest to get rich, just to put on a great music festival and to find a way to do as much good as possible in the process.
So this year, Birdfest has officially partnered with Palmetto Project’s statewide childhood literacy project, known as My First Books South Carolina. This organization is part of Dolly Parton's research-driven, national literacy campaign, which has been proven to directly impact the lives of children (and their families) in a very positive way. Birdfest is determined to make a positive impact on the state of education in South Carolina. After the festival, any profits from Birdfest 2017 ticket sales will be used by My First Books SC to put books in the homes of pre-kindergarten aged children. Every $33 that this organization gets from us can be used to enroll one family in the program for one year. Through My First Books South Carolina, the Birdfest Community has an exciting opportunity to really make a difference in South Carolina, and we can't wait to see just how much good we can do this year.
We're so proud of our utterly unique atmosphere, proud of the top-notch musical entertainment we get every year, proud of all the good we get to do in South Carolina, and so very proud of the cool, family-friendly, party-loving, music-loving super-community we get to create for one weekend every May. We're glad that you're somehow a part of it, whether you've been to every Birdfest, or even just hearing about it for the first time right here. Either way, we really hope you'll consider getting on board and helping to make Birdfest 2017 a reality. Thanks!
By the way- All sponsors giving $500 or more have first dibs on our coveted RV electrical hookups. We'll be in touch to arrange...

Risks and challenges
Birdfest is a hefty endeavor to say the least. It takes lots of logistics and considerations to make sure everything happens when and how it should. We've got a great little team ready to face all of the hurdles we'll encounter, and we mostly just need the funding to facilitate it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
