Who's talking about Bios Incube
Meet Bios Incube.
After several years of working on the Bios Urn - a biodegradable urn designed to turn you into a tree after you die-, our team has designed a new product that will help us bring the Bios Urn to more people, creating a meaningful experience for us, and the environment.
Bios Incube is the first system that lets you plant your Bios Urn close to you, and combines the insights of tree growth with data from its environment. Depending on the type of tree, the Bios Incube will water it accordingly.
The Bios Incube includes:
Bios Urn. A biodegradable urn designed to allow the growth of a tree when planted using the cremated remains of a loved one.
Bios Incube. The Incubator that facilitates growth, and enables you to track and monitor your Bios Urn when and where you want to.
Mobile application. An application that ties everything together, seamlessly, for you to use. The app will tell you how your tree is growing, and when necessary, provide advice for maintenance.
How it works?
Bios Incube is made to work by itself, and setting it up is really simple. To start, you just need to plant the Bios Urn inside of the Bios Incube. Planting a Bios Urn is easy, you can see how here.
Once the Bios Urn has been planted, place the sensor on the surface of the soil, just over the Bios urn. The sensor will track and water your tree using the water tank inside the Bios Incube.
Now that the system is ready, you just need to sync it to your mobile application. With this application, you´ll be able to track and monitor your tree, and stay up-to-date on environmental conditions.
After set up is complete, the Bios Incube is ready to work. All by itself, the system will start tracking and watering your tree, while also keeping you informed about important ongoings with your tree.

Why the Bios Incube matters?

The topic of death and the process of grief is often sterilized and avoided in conversation, for fear of being too taboo to discuss. We want to change that. We believe the end of human life is a remarkable event that has the ability to teach us if we only let it. The Bios Incube wants to give us an opportunity to take part in this unique life-bearing experience.
Burial space is decreasing worldwide, a fact that has been repeatedly stated in the news. Over 56 million deaths take place every year, and cemeteries are finding it difficult to keep up with the increase in demand.
The Bios Incube, in conjunction with the Bios Urn, is an environmentally friendly solution to this issue. We believe in adding to the cycle of life by replacing cemeteries with forests, one Bios Incube at a time.
Humans have used technology to improve our lives in so many ways, yet technology is limited when it comes to death and the afterlife. The Bios Incube uses technology to enhance our experience and understanding of death, by turning the process into a form of guided meditation.
Today, the average burial costs between $7,000-$10,000, and as inflation increases so do the prices of funerals. We think a product must be honest and democratic. That's why Bios Incube can be used anywhere, by anyone, with total independence.
What's inside the Bios Incube?
The Bios Incube comes with an extraordinary sensor device that is used to track your Bios Urn, detect levels of light exposure, assess electrical conductivity, and monitor moisture and temperature in the atmosphere and soil.
The sensor device attaches to the surface of the soil just over the Bios Urn, and is constantly being updated on the growth conditions and status of your seed or tree. Hidden inside the device is a custom piece of hardware equipped with sensors that are capable of tracking and mapping the needs of your tree.
All this information is wirelessly transferred through WIFI to your application, making the data available to you any time, anywhere.
Soil moisture sensor monitors the levels of water in the soil. In order to grow a healthy tree, humidity levels must be respectful.
Soil conductivity sensor analyzes the amount of fertilizer present in the soil. If the electrical conductivity in the soil is too low, the Bios Incube will let you know the amount of fertilizer your tree needs.
Soil temperature sensor measures the temperature of the surrounding soil to determine if it´s balanced.
Air temperature and humidity sensors examine the temperature and humidity of your surroundings to ensure optimal environmental conditions.
Solar irradiance sensor tracks the daily sunlight your tree requires.
Bios Incube combines all the collected data from its sensors and takes on an active role in watering and maintaining your tree. When the Bios Incube detects the need for hydration, it automatically mobilizes a water pump to nourish the essential parts of the seed.
The irrigation system in the Bios Incube is designed to distribute water homogenously around the seed, and support cultivation requirements. The Bios Incube will also make sure that the growth medium you use maintains favorable water levels.
The water tank.
The Bios Incube can sustain up to 3 gallons of water, enough to nourish your seed or tree for an average of twenty days. The system will also make sure that the water quality is up-to-par, and is conducive to sprout development.
The Bios Incube uses WIFI to connect to your home network. The powerful WIFI chip in the Bios Incube provides you with the ability to track and maintain the growth of your seed or tree, even if you’re not home to be with it.
The Bios Incube can be paired to your Wi-Fi network using the iPhone/Android application, or using any device that has a working Internet connection.
When designing the Bios Urn and Bios Incube we wanted to create something that would serve as a catalyst for life and growth. The Bios Incube has a contemporary and minimal design that is adaptable to any environment or space it is placed in.
The Bios Incube is as beautiful inside, as it is outside. Its rotational molded structure protects the Bios Urn with a two-layered body of polypropylene. The exterior construct of the Incube forges a highly supportive interior form, with a capacity to store up to 3 gallons of water.
The anatomy of the sensor has been constructed to protect the printed circuit board, without compromising on performance and purpose.
The Bios Incube is versatile and has been designed to fit into any space it is placed in. It's size, shape, and weight are perfect for indoor or outdoor use.

How we got here?
For the past few months, we’ve been heads down designing, prototyping, coding, testing, breaking and building. The experience we want to help create is the driving force behind every thing we've done.
Where are we now?
We recently completed our first successful EVT build (engineering validation testing). This process involved manufacturing, assembling and testing the functionality of all sensors that are in the Bios Incube.
We’ve started doing at-home testing with our team, and will be gradually increasing the size of our testing in the coming months.
We are now beginning our second EVT build to incorporate modifications and improvements we discovered during our testing period. After this, we will freeze changes in the electronics and move onto DVT (design verification testing,) where we will test all the electrical and mechanical components, as well as the firmware, for precision and functionality.
The final stage will be PVT (production verification testing), which is designed to test for quality, exactness, and character.
We've started testing and validating, but now we need your help to end design verification, user testing, tooling, and completion of app and cloud platform.
We are a team of designers, engineers and operation experts who have spent over a year creating the Bios Incube. We´ve worked on the Bios Urn for several years now, and had the privilege to meet some of the people who used one, which was a very big moment for us.
Every person on our team has the desire to make a life-changing impact in this industry, and in the world. We believe that design, in conjunction with nature, has the ability to change, and better serve the world.
We developed the Bios Urn with the help of our customers, and people like you. We listened and learned what they wanted and needed, and dedicated ourselves to improving the Bios Urn.
Now with the Bios Incube we want to do that again, together. In the coming months, we want to learn from you what your patterns and rituals are, how you want to use the Incube, and what is important to you. We want to be sure we build the best possible product, and help create the most rewarding experience.

Risks and challenges
We're making a product that has never been made before; hardware and software are hard to build and are easy to break; so we are working very hard to make sure this will work perfectly.
Bios is a company of designers who employed engineers and software developers to achieve our goal, we understand what goes into making hardware and we know how to do it.
