Weighitz: World's smallest smart scale!
Weigh & track ingredients. Weigh yourself and track your weight. Weigh your suitcase before you travel.
Most modern homes have a series of weighing scales:
- Kitchen Scale
- Bathroom Scale
- Postal Scale
- Hook Scale for suitcases
So what's the problem?
Currently each scale is designed for a specific application: anyone that has tried weighing their suitcase with the bathroom scale can attest to that!
Why do we have to buy a new weighing scale for every application - why can't we have a scale that weighs, whatever we want, wherever we want and whenever we want. That is why we created Weighitz:
What's a Weighitz?
A Weighitz is a miniature smart weighing device that can be used to turn any platform into a smart weighing scale.
How does it work?
The Weighitz (Patent Pending) consists of a reinforced polymer shell which contains the load cell, electronics and bluetooth emitter. The top of the housing has a slight concavity and roughness which helps to hold bowls and curved weighing platforms. When an object is placed on the Weighitz, the polymer housing deforms slightly which is read by a load cell. This is converted to a digital signal which is then transmitted via bluetooth to a mobile app. The app will display the weight in whatever units you choose. If two or more Weighitz are used then the load is shared across them and they will each report the pressure they experience. Each signal will be sent to the App which will report the combined weight.
Resolution and Accuracy?
So what can I weigh with Weighitz?
Weighitz are designed so that you can weigh a variety of weights:
A single Weighitz will be designed to weigh from 0 - 90 pounds.
Each new Weighitz will add approximately 90 pounds to the maximum amount that can be weighed.
We wanted to make a scale that was sensitive enough to measure very light weights - like grams of salt - but strong enough to measure heavy things - like suitcases.
Lets look at a few examples of how we will use the App.
The kitchen scale:
- Turns any plate, bowl, pot or cup into a weighing platform.
- Convert Units, like Oz to Cups.
- Measure Calories.
- Track your diet over time.
- Recommend recipes and health tips.
The Body Weight Scale:
- Turn any platform - like your old scale into a smart scale.
- Create a personal profile.
- Track your weight over time.
- Track you BMI & set weight goals.
- Even track your calories vs weight changes.
- Integrate with the kitchen module in the app to track what you eat.
The Travel and Luggage Scale:
- Worried about those excess baggage fees?
- Turn your suitcase into a smart scale and monitor the weight of your bag as you pack.
- Set your baggage allowance and app will give warning when overloaded.
- As they are compact, take them with you during your travel and weigh yourself whilst traveling and weigh your baggage for your return flight - make sure you haven't bought too much shopping!
- Use anything you like as a scale.
- Weigh individual packages or samples.
- Turn the dog bed into a scale and make sure your best friend is healthy.
- What else can you weigh?
What will the App do?
We have three main goals for the application:
- Make it available on all android and apple platforms, phones and tablets.
- Create a set of easy to use sub applications - turn the most common uses of the Weighitz into single click applications.
- Create a sub application that will allow the users to do whatever they want!
The free mobile application, will be available on both android and apple, and it will come with four easy to use sub-applications: Kitchen, Body Weight, Travel, and the final application which allows you to use Weighitz in whatever way you decide: Weigh Anything!
We have been working on this project for a little over nine months. We have created a functional prototype of the Weighitz scales. Our app interface has been tested and the basic app has been designed.
Why we need your support?
There is a big leap between having a working prototype and mass producing a device: We have partnered with an experienced manufacturing management group with teams in both the US and China to ensure that our product will be delivered on time!
Your support will go to all of the above.
Manufacturing of Devices and minimum orders: The cost of tooling and manufacturing is highly dependent on the final number of Weighitz ordered.
Testing: We are having samples of the Weighitz tested by independent safety and testing firms wherever they are sold to ensure that they meet all safety standards in that particular country. Initially we aim to satisfy the North American and UK/EU regulations.
Delivery dates are estimates!
Our plan is to begin delivery by the end of December of this year and you have my word that we will strive to do this. However its nearly impossible to accurately determine a delivery date without knowing the exact numbers of products and the locations of our supporters. We think Weighitz would be a great Christmas present but if your buying them as gifts please understand that the date may change - we will keep all of our supporters updated!
Our team is composed of some very talented people and me. We are also working with a team of consultants who ensure that any hurdles we run into are easily overcome.
Alan Kelly has a Masters in Physics and is a registered clinical scientist in the United Kingdom. He had the idea for Weighitz about a year ago and is now looking for your support to bring the product to life. He has worked in clinical physics for the last ten years but has left the clinical field to work full time on his inventions.
Dr. Poornima Kumar is a highly regarded scientist and engineer and is the backbone of the Weighitz project.
Alma Lafler is our talented videographer and also assists in marketing of our products.
Zachary Grimshaw is our video editor and is responsible for the cool editing you see above.
Our team is not alone in this: We have hired an external mechanical engineering firm to ensure that this project goes smoothly.

Self Weighing with Weighitz:
Risks and challenges
As with all Kickstarter products there are a series of possible delays to the delivery of your Weighitz. The main issues are described below:
The cost of manufacturing a product is highly dependent on the number of products ordered. The unit cost reduces as the order size increases, but the cost and time to manufacture is increased. We will mitigate this risk by selecting a series of different manufacturing partners.
Quality control in the factory selected is another scary problem. We can try and reduce the chances of problems by carefully selecting a production partner.
Every country we deliver to will have different customs regulations. When deliveries enter customs there is very little a company can do to expedite the process - delays caused by customs should be a matter of days or weeks, rather than months.
If we receive enough backers that the component supply becomes a problem, then we will be happy!
With all the above issues we are minimizing the risks by partnering with a very experienced team of product developers and manufacturing consultants.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
