The BioLite BaseLantern is the world’s first flatpack lantern that combines breakthrough edge-lighting with Bluetooth connectivity to bring you a portable lighting solution that doubles as your own miniature smartgrid. By using edge-lighting rather than traditional diffusing lenses, we're able to remove wasted space and deliver a lantern that's four times smaller than the competition.

Your phone is one of the best remote controls out there, so we built a custom Low Energy Bluetooth app that connects with your BaseLantern and transforms it into your own miniature smartgrid:
The app’s dark background is easy on the eyes in low-light conditions and is designed to be super intuitive – so if a friend picks up your phone, there’s no learning curve, they can use it right away.
The BaseLantern app also provides real-time analytics and feedback on the battery life so you can calibrate energy usage to sustain the length of your trip – no guessing on how much juice is left.
Proximity Activation automatically turns the BaseLantern on or off based on your relative location. Your own personal beacon, it's perfect for finding your way home in the dark.

Why we’re asking for your help
This ain’t our first rodeo… but it is our first Bluetooth connected product and we’re looking to our community to make it the best it can be. We can learn a lot from you.
Funding from this campaign will help us invest in the costs associated with developing our Bluetooth hardware and building both an iOS and Android mobile app – and we’re hoping we might be able to hit some stretch goals along the way that unlock even more cool features.
And equally important to funding is feedback: we want the connected functionality of the BaseLantern to be useful to you in real life and in real situations and that means getting honest insights on the system and opportunities to improve the application. Your questions, your concerns, we take them all back to the design and engineering team which helps us inform the last stage of production and development before things are fully baked.

We have learned a lot over the last four years here at BioLite and we’re proud to have a development process and supply chain that works together in a solid rhythm. We’re also proud to have successfully fulfilled our 2014 Kickstarter Campaign - we are not vaporware and we take our schedules seriously.
That being said, anytime you’re manufacturing a product, there is always risk involved. Factory delays, quantity changes, port delays (those are never fun) can always come up expectedly and mess with timelines. We’ll let you know if these come up and we really appreciate your patience if they do.
And as we mentioned above, we’re also developing our first-ever mobile app, which comes with a new set of challenges we’re excited to tackle, but may require a slight learning curve: as with any mobile app, there may be some bugs at the beginning, updates to be shared, and beta testers to be celebrated – thanks for figuring it out with us.
And lastly, the amazing global community here at Kickstarter highlights one last challenge that we’d like to address: international fulfillment. As a small company, we have worked incredibly hard to find reasonable shipping rates so we could make this campaign available to everyone all over the world. But the simple fact is that some areas are just more expensive to ship to than others. And when you ship a sold good, duties and taxes get involved, too. We have prepared for this and have tried to be as transparent as possible by including clear shipping fees based on your location when you select your reward level – these fees INCLUDE taxes and duties, so no surprise costs when it shows up at your doorstep. We are not making any money off of these shipping costs, and are in fact subsidizing a portion of the actual fees. We wish we had our own special delivery drone that could get around this, but until then, this is our strongest solution and still the best deal our international supporters can get on the BaseLantern.
