About

This game is funded to create some amazing artwork, a great solo experience focusing on guiding you to get in the mood for some adventuring that can be done over multiple game sessions in a dynamically shifting dark-fantasy world.

Here's some drafts of the kind of style we would like for the game:

The game itself is a simplistic minimalist board game with a lot of focus on keeping the information level down while leaving room for your imagination using keywords and a reference sheet instead. It consists of only 10 dice, 53 cards (split into 4 different decks), a reference sheet, 3 different tokens as well as a double deck wooden box with an engraved motive for those nights were you want a special treat, giving yourself a gift of some medieval story-telling and adventuring.

A playthrough of the prototype:

The rulebook (Here's a pdf: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ToY5evc88sWj8qZA1xHKtVbtvpYDHsjI):

Here's some additional drafts of the card-layout of the game (all 54 cards have drafts to be made into actual art once the project is funded) which will be manufactured in poker-sized cards of professional standard card stock with blue core (smooth finish):

Three different 20 mm tokens (peddlers goods, rations & gold) to keep it simple:

For visual clarity we're including 10 single-sided 14 mm wooden die:

This is the kind of wooden box we're having in mind (with a single engraved star on it):

Northern Star - Solitaire rewards memorizing due to the low amount of cards, that instead varies greatly in their content. A focus have been given to only keep content that feels fun and essential to the game. A special feature is that you can save your character and progress after a game session, so as to be continued at a later time. For each game-session you will have an objective that will have permanent negative consequences if not resolved - your character may survive and improve but the world will grow darker until all objectives are resolved.

Lastly I see the project having potential for some great solitaire experiences since this have been developed and playtested the past four years, and is now subject for a board game contest on Boardgamegeek for blind playtesting.

I have access to 3D-printers, laser-cutters, sketch-studios, 2 different organisations for game-testing and both contacts and an online group with extensive experience in regards to game design and business management.

My name is Pär, I'm a 28 year old product design student who have just graduated, currently living in the northern parts of Sweden. I have developed several games before (both digital and analog), but this is my first published game. Boardgames I have designed have mostly been in the cooperative categories where as I made one for my product design degree (with a lot of focus on story-telling, simple rules and deep immersion). I enjoy Sherlock Holmes: Consultive detective and Arkham horror, Tiny Epic Quest and Battlestar Galactica among others. I'm quite a creative person who've been playing games my entire life, studied business management, been in start-ups before through business incubators and also like creative arts such as drawing and playing music.

Kristian here, also living in the northern parts of Sweden. I've been interested in boardgames sinces I was little and studied game design at Gothenburg University. The intent I have with this project is to be a part of the game creating team and making sure you get your well deserved answers to your questions on our social media sites.

Risks and challenges

I see this as a test to see how big the audience can be for solitaire board games. The goal of SEK 317,500 can be quite a challenge to reach, requring +1700 backers which we will try to overcome through extensive marketing on different social media platforms and sending out additional promotional videos. If you find Northern Star intriguing, feel free to spread the word about it.

In regards to artwork I find artists can be quite expensive, but due to the simplistic yet beautiful motives this may reduce their cost. A potential risk is that the game may not find an illustrator that will make the game as beautiful as I intend making it, and also that the costs may surpass budget. However there are still margins in the funding goal if this would happen, so as to making the game a reality.

The game (and components) are truly simplistic and we have already got a qoute on manufacturing and shipping costs, so I see no real problems that can't be overcome. Especially with my past experience in regards to start-ups. However I see potential risks with distribution and perhaps not having illustrations as beautiful as intended.

Board game distribution and logistics: One of the biggest risks is that difficulty due to lacking experience in the board game distribution sector and creating a pipe-line for distribution will delay the shipping-process of the game, however I have good supplier contacts which handles both supply and shipping. I also have great contacts and friends within the University business developers sector who could give guidance if needed.

Some mechanics may be flawed due to not enough game-testing, although the game being the result of almost 4 years of individual playtesting culminating into one simplistic concept. The game have entered a solitaire board game contest for additional blind-tests, and is continually playtested in addition to designing artwork, updating and marketing our Kickstarter.
