About

I NEED YOUR SUPPORT

  • My name is Ronald Bayens and I have been a professional artist for 30 years and have been an avid wilderness canoeist much longer.
  • This project is a limited-edition of 50 cold cast bronze sculpture series and Exclusive Edition of 12 Foundry Bronze Sculptures produced in the ancient Lost Wax Process depicting wilderness canoeing.  This sculpture honors legendary Canoeist, Filmmaker, and Artist, Canadian Icon Bill Mason.
  • As rewards to help fund the bronze editions, I will be making beautiful Resin Casts with patinas of copper and rust. They will not be offered after the Kickstarter campaign is finished.
  • I created the original sculpture, and I make each and every casting with the exception of the Foundry pieces.  These are cast with a team of professionals under my guidance.
  • The original sculpture and molds have been created, and several sculptures have already been cast. Once the campaign ends, production will start immediately. Projected delivery for most sculptures will be October 2019 with the Foundry Bronzes scheduled for delivery in December 2019 in and around Christmas or a little after.

Working together with Bill Mason's family, Joyce, Becky, and Paul Mason, (who are all well-known canoeists), each sculpture will be a treasured collectible, as well as a touchstone for any wilderness canoeist to have for reminiscing, while planning the next great adventure. The sculptures are an inspirational tribute to canoeing's greatest advocate and teacher.

It is a great privilege for me, Ronald Bayens, to be able to combine my two great loves, canoeing and art, while honouring a man I greatly admire.

ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

In June of 2018, my friends and I headed out on a canoe trip to the spectacular Petawawa river in Algonquin Park, Ontario, Canada.  Several of us felt we had journeyed back in time to our late teens and early twenties when we were all wilderness canoe guides, spending all of our summer paddling the northern lakes and rivers of Ontario and Quebec.  Several of the guys on our trip had paddled the Petawawa, but despite having traversed most all of Algonquin Park, this part of our journey had eluded me. I had wanted to canoe this river from the time I first read Bill Mason's "Path of the Paddle" book.  This river was one of Bill Mason's favorite rivers.

Our trip was fantastic! My son Christian went along, and he too had spent a few summers as a canoe guide. I was inspired to make a work of art to commemorate our trip, but instead of painting, I felt the need to sculpt instead. I again found inspiration in my canoeing hero, Bill Mason.  The book of his I had studied repeatedly was a photo of, "Bill Running Little Thompson Rapids, Petawawa River ".  When I thought about the sculpture, I realized that  image was it! That was the sculpture I wanted to create and I could actually see how it would be.  My next thought was, "This would be an awesome sculpture in bronze".  I also wanted the sculpture to be a size I could pick up, hold in my hands, and contemplate, every time I wanted to remember paddling the river.

First, I made the original sculpture in clay.

I took the finished model to a friend who has a foundry and discussed the bronze process. He also enlightened me to the "Cold Casting Bronze" process, which I learned.

I was pleased at how many people loved the sculpture.

My friends and family all admire and revere Bill Mason, and canoeing.  I knew that many other people feel the same way and some people asked repeatedly if I would consider making an edition they could buy for themselves and/or for others. Out of my deepest respect for Bill Mason and his family, I knew I would not undertake any Bill Mason inspired sculpture venture without Bill Mason's family's blessing and cooperation.  Bill Mason's family include his wife Joyce, son Paul, and daughter Becky. I contacted them to see if they were interested in meeting with me and sent them images of the sculpture I'd created.  To my great relief, they not only approved of my effort, but endorsed it.  They wanted to see the sculpture in person and I headed to Ottawa to meet with them and to receive any feedback on the project.

The Mason family knows that many people have been inspired by Bills Mason's films and books.  His influence is an ongoing testament not only to furthering canoe skills, but to the absolute joy of canoeing.  Together with the family's guidance in capturing the true spirit of wilderness canoeing, and the recorded adventures of Bill Mason,  we hope to make an ongoing series of "Bill Mason's Wilderness Canoeing Sculptures".

KICKSTARTER REWARDS:

Limited Edition of 500 Rust Patina Resin Cast Sculptures:  $75 Level

These Rust Patina Sculptures will not be offered after the Campaign ends and/or the Limited Edition reaches 500.

Each of these sculptures will be made from multiple duplicate molds from the Master Mold used for the Cold Cast Bronze Limited Edition.  Each Rust Patina Resin Cast Sculpture will be hand painted with authentic iron paint.  The Rust Patina Resin Cast Sculpture will then be oxidized to achieve the rich earth red tones appearance that happens naturally to iron when left in the elements.

Each Rust Patina Resin Cast Sculpture will come with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Sculptor, Ronald Bayens, as well as an Edition Number.

A portion of the funds target the building of the Life-Size Bronze Memorial Statue of Bill Mason canoeing.

Limited Edition of 500 Copper Patina Resin Cast Sculptures:  $175 Level

These Copper Patina Sculptures will not be offered after the Campaign ends and/or the Edition reaches 500.

Each of these sculptures will be made from multiple duplicate molds from the Master Mold used for the Cold Cast Bronze Limited Edition.  Each Copper Patina Resin Cast Sculpture will be hand painted with copper which oxidizes each sculpture to create an individualized traditional green patina motif.   The process is shown by clicking on the photo.

Each Copper Patina Resin Cast Sculpture will come with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the Sculptor, Ronald Bayens, as well as an Edition Number.

A portion of the funds target the building of the Life-Size Bronze Memorial Statue of Bill Mason canoeing.

Limited edition of 50 Cold Cast Bronze Sculpture:  $500 Level

This limited edition of 50 Cold Cast Bronze Sculptures is a process that also makes a bronze sculpture, but without using molten metal.  This process involves using real bronze powder suspended in resin.  The Cold Cast Bronze Sculptures create the look and feel of a Foundry Bronze Sculpture, but doesn't require the more extensive Foundry Lost Wax process.  All of the Cold Cast Bronze Sculptures will be created by Ronald Bayens in his studio.

Each of the 50 Limited Edition Cold Cast Sculptures will come in a  presentation box with a display stand and a brass plate.  Also included are a Sculpture Edition Number,  a Certificate of Authenticity with signatures of Bill Mason's family, Joyce, Paul, and Becky, as well as Sculpture Artist, Ronald Bayens.

Exclusive for Kickstarter Cold Cast Bronze Sculpture Purchases

Just for the KickStarter Purchase of a Cold Cast Bronze Sculpture, and included with the Cold Cast Bronze Sculpture shipment, will be a copy of the biography of Bill Mason, "Fire in the Bones, Bill Mason and the Canadian Canoeing Tradition", signed by the family.  This book will not be offered for Sculpture Edition pieces purchased after the Kickstarter campaign closes.

A portion of the funds target the building of the Life-Size Bronze Memorial Statue of Bill Mason canoeing and the Bill Mason Environmental Scholarship.

Exclusive Limited Edition of 12 Sculptures cast in Bronze at a Foundry: $1,500 Level

If you have ever had the pleasure of looking at an original Fredric Remington bronze, or a bronze from ancient Greece, the process is the same and has changed little in 2000 years.

It is the lost wax process of pouring molten bronze into a ceramic mold where a space has been left by melting a wax copy of the original sculpture. Here is a video explaining it.

Only 12 of these True Bronze Sculptures of "Bill Running Little Thompson Rapids, Petawawa River" will be produced.  Each Sculpture will be numbered and will have a Foundry Mark.

This image is a facsimile of a Foundry Bronze Sculpture. Although the mold is made from the same original clay as the other casts, each Foundry Bronze Sculpture first has to actually be a wax copy.  Each sculpture will be individually artistically enhanced by Ronald Bayens before the mold for each bronze is made. Because every one of the sculptures has adjustments made to improve it before the Foundry process begins, each sculpture is uniquely individual.

Each Foundry Bronze Sculpture will come in a handcrafted mini Wannigan, which is a traditional canoeing box with a display stand with brass plate.

Exclusive for Kickstarter Purchases of the Foundry Bronze Sculpture

Just for the Kickstarter backer of a Foundry Bronze Sculpture, is a copy of Bill Mason's book "Path of the Paddle", which is currently out of print.  This book will arrive with the Sculpture and will be signed by Bill Mason's family Joyce, Paul, and Becky.  Also accompanying the Foundry Bronze Sculpture, is a Certificate of Authenticity with signatures of Bill Mason's family, Joyce, Paul and Becky, and Sculptor Ronald Bayens as well as an Edition Number.  The signed book will not be offered for Edition pieces purchased after the Kickstarter campaign closes.

A portion of the funds target the building of the Life-Size Bronze Memorial Statue of Bill Mason canoeing and the Bill Mason Environmental Scholarship.

What is  Life Size Bronze Memorial Statue of Bill Mason Project ?

This is the end goal of the entire Bill Mason Wilderness Canoeing Series.  It is a massive undertaking that will be done entirely through funds made from sales of the sculpture series and donations. This will be a gift from the canoeing community to the country to celebrate a great Canadian and the spirit of wilderness canoeing that he dedicated his life to showing and educating the world about. It is our moonshot to paraphrase from John F. Kennedy's great speech when asked why  he said "We choose to go to the moon in this decade not because it is easy , but because it is hard, because the challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one that we intend to win"

Together , without government help or interference, we will make this happen. In time we will be looking for a location that would be perfect for the Bill Mason and Wilderness Canoeing Memorial.

BIOGRAPHY

Ronald Bayens is considered one of the most sought after portrait artists in the country. He has been painting professionally for 25 years and his work hangs in public and private collections throughout America, Canada, and Europe. His published work is sold worldwide.

Ronald was born in 1965 in Toronto, Canada, and began painting in Junior High School.  He continued with his education by attending the Ontario College of Art and Design where he won many awards.  He was chosen to apprentice for two years with Michael John Angel, a classical painter and renowned art teacher who is now the director of the Angel Academy in Florence, Italy.

Ronald’s work follows the school of “Impressionist Realists” which include artists John Singer Sargent, Anders Zorn, and Joaquim Sorolla.  The method he practices stresses accurate drawing as well as the color theories of the French Impressionists.

Following in the footsteps of the great masters of the past, Ronald not only is an accomplished portrait painter but also paints landscapes, figurative, genre, still-life paintings, as well as etching.  “If I can see it, I want to paint it”, he often tells his students.

Ronald came to The United States from Canada in 1995 to pursue a career in portrait work. The southeast has a long and proud tradition of portraiture that continues to this day. He was quickly embraced by the South and has been an in-demand portrait artist from the time he arrived. With hundreds of satisfied clients, word spread quickly, and now Ronald is regarded as one of the leading artists in the country.  His portraits and fine art hang in many leading universities, museums, hospitals and private homes.

He enjoys painting commissioned works and teaching students in his studio at the Auburn, Alabama historical site, Greystone Mansion.  His second studio is in the William King Museum of Art in Abingdon, Virginia.

Ronald resides in Bristol, Tennessee with his wife Beth and, during university breaks, their two youngest (out of five) children. Ron enjoys camping, canoeing, biking the Virginia Creeper Trail, and reading biographies and/or historical non fiction books wherever his trips take him.

RONALD BAYENS ARTIST STATEMENT

I love beautiful paintings.

I love art that celebrates the best of what the world has to offer, the best part of humanity and nature. Whether it is a landscape showing the tranquility of a sunrise, a figurative painting capturing a moment between a mother and child, or a portrait showing the dignity of a life well lived.

This is the art that stops me in a gallery and makes me look and absorb the work and then look again. I always feel uplifted and blessed to have had the chance to see what the artist had to share.

These are the paintings I wish to create now and forever.

Risks and challenges

I have done my best to minimize any risks associates with this project by creating the sculpture first and the mold and proofing it several times to assure quality and my ability to hand make the numbers I am offering. This is not a concept of a project, the sculpture is real and casts have proofed. The funding is for the materials and labor needed to create the edition. The shipping and packaging has also been thoroughly checked to make sure the sculptures will arrive arrive safe with tracking. Any unforeseen circumstances have been accounted for and time added to the delivery. In the case of my death the sculptures could still be made from the molds, but unfortunately I would not be able to put the finishing touches on.
