Greetings friends, fans & the just plain curious,
Welcome to the "Project Description" part of this "pitch."
It is my sincere & humble hope that you'll read at least this far and consider helping us meet our funding goal.
Here's the thing:
My work through these 80plus albums over 25 years has been so wondrously "grass-roots driven." THANK YOU for giving my work a place in your lives. It is an honor to be able to make music for you. ~ Bill Mallonee
What's the goal here?
I am attempting to fund a vinyl rendering of the historic recording called "Killing Floor," in a double vinyl/180gram format. KF was produced by: Mark Heard, REM's Peter Buck, myself & Billy Holmes.
(Released in 1992, it has never been available in vinyl before...)
The press on this album?
Intense, articulate, astute, dazzling. Here's a sample:
"Killing Floor," Mallonee's 3rd album, produced by Mark Heard & REM's Peter Buck, charts at #27. ~ Paste Music Magazine's "Top 100 Albums of the 90's."
"Killing Floor charts at #37 in Paste's Music Magazine's "Top 50 Southern Rock Records of All Time"
"He might well be the best folk-rock act nobody's ever hear of.
The intelligence and intensity of Mallonee's writing has elicited comparisons to Dylan from his loyal underground admirers. Given the consistency and quality of Mallonee's work over many albums, he is arguably the first writer since John Prine to make the comparison plausible." - New York Press
"Mallonee has remained fascinated with the shadowy emotional toils and struggles inherent in the American experience, compelling & insightful, he continues to probe through Americana rock and roll proving that sometimes the only story worth telling is that of the journey." - Rolling Stone
"Dylan-tinged vocal and introspective lyrics that spin out big-picture stories imbued with chilling small details." - Billboard
Killing Floor (1992) was the recording that got the national "buzz" going on Athens, Ga.'s Vigilantes of Love.
16 songs covering such celebrated themes of Love, Loss, End Times, Redemption & the Cultural "Fail."
The album continues to be many people's definitive VoL fav. Multi-instrumentalist, Bill Holmes and I delivered most of this in a two week span; Produced by: Mark Heard, Bill Mallonee, REM's Peter Buck and Billy Holmes.
Bill Mallonee: songs, acoustic guitars, vocals, harp, drums
Billy Holmes: electric guitars, bass, keyboards, trumpet, harmony vocals
Guests: Bob Gowin: double bass & Travis McNabb: drums
Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges:
This will be an ambitious project. vinyl projects always require a bit more loving care and over-seeing, in my opinion.
But, the hard work has really already been done:
Vigilantes of Love made a great record, one that has stood the test of time. It would be a glory to see it's birth on vinyl.
The way in which this critically acclaimed album was rendered, recorded, mixed & mastered have left many already wondering why it was never released in a vinyl version.
Issues that loom large on projects of this nature tend to be of two kinds:
1st: There is the working hand in hand with the replication companies to faithfully reproduce the sonic qualities of the album. 16 songs requires 4 sides to maintain high quality sonic definition.
2nd: I am working with album artists to re-create faithfully the imaging & feel of the original cover. It is possible that I maybe able to locate the original art work. However, given the fact the album is over 25 years old since it's release, it is possible we may have to recreate it from scratch.
In the case of issue #1, i have long standing relationship with a major vinyl replication company in the US; the dialogue we've established has been quite good and I believe it will ensure great quality and a faithful reproduction of the sonic qualities of Killing Floor.
On the topic of issue #2:
Even if we have to start from scratch (which I doubt we will have to do) we should be able to render the cover faithfully graced the first album.
The main thing is the music. And that will be faithfully replicated & well preserved! ~ billLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
