About this project
We are designing a big, versatile bike cargo trailer for easily carrying medium and big loads easily -- the kind of loads typically carried in the trunk or back seat of a car.
We've been testing and refining The Wandertec Tuba for many months. The trailers you see in these photos and in our video are late prototypes, but they are pretty close to the final design. We are asking supporters to help us fund cost of prototyping, production and marketing.
When we are fully funded, our Kickstarter backers will be the first to receive the Wandertec Tuba Trailer. (See our pledge amounts and the respective rewards.) Then we will market the trailer alongside our other trailers on BikeTrailerShop.com.
Why The Wandertec Tuba?
Whether you aspire to use your car less, or you aspire to be car free, you quickly realize that the mini-van lifestyle has advantages that can't be met by most utility cycling accessories.
Most commercial bike trailers are designed for either carrying children, carrying pets, touring, or carrying small loads of less than 75 pounds. They are made for recreation, or for supplementing a car-dependent lifestyle. There are also heavy-duty bike trailers made to carry up to 300 pounds; blank canvases for ambitious customization.
The Wandertec Tuba Bike Trailer will be a robust trailer for the rest of us. For people who shop for groceries, make trips to the hardware store, haul supplies to soccer practice. We want to use our bikes more, but we don't necessarily want to be all hippie about it.
What Features Will The Wandertec Tuba Have?
The basic trailer will be an aluminum frame, wheels, and a hitch arm.
The versatile hitch arm adjusts to level the trailer no matter what the wheel size of the bike, plus it can be used as a kick stand when the trailer is not connected to a bike, and as a handle when you pull it around in cart mode.
Do-it-yourselfers, this might be all you need. Design your own load bed, or an enclosed custom cargo space.
Additional upgrades will include:
A flat loading surface made from strong, lightweight Baltic birch plywood with multiple attachment points for the included tie-down straps.
Aluminum rails to provide stability for your cargo as you pile it up. Connect straps and bungees to these rails to secure your cargo.
Protects your cargo from mud and road grime while it retains smaller items without having to strap them down. More than 11,000 cubic inches below the rim for the Extra Large Liner, and 7700 cubic inches the Large Liner.
Rain Cover with a Cross Support
The cover keeps your cargo dry, while the cross support prevents sagging.
The Wandertec Tuba will be available in two sizes:
- Large will have a frame length of approximately 29 inches and an optional load bed with a length of approximately 31 inches.
- Extra Large (or as we like to call it, "Contrabass") will have a frame length of approximately 43 inches and an optional load bed with a length of approximately 45 inches.
The width of the frame (both sizes) will be approximately 21.25 inches, and the with of the load bed (both sizes) will be approximately 23.75 inches.
There will be no small ("picollo") or medium ("euphonium") versions of the Wandertec Tuba. (For that niche, we already make a trailer called the Wandertec Bongo.)
What About The Name?
We like to name our products after musical instruments, such as our first bike cargo trailer, The Bongo. We're calling this one The Wandertec Tuba because it's big. The tuba is the biggest brass instrument, and provides the foundation for many types of music. The Tuba Bike Trailer is our biggest bike trailer yet, and is the foundation for any lifestyle that's big on bikes, and light on cars.
Pledge $25 or More: Get a Tuba T-Shirt
A $25 pledge gets you a t-shirt. Any pledge of more than $25 gets you that other thing plus a t-shirt.
A Wandertec Tuba Plus an E-Bike
We've found that a Wandertec Tuba in combination with an electric bike makes for a great car replacement.
We have two electric bikes that we have gently used as demos, and we are now offering them in combination with a fully-loaded Tuba Trailer.
These bikes are in new condition, and you can get them for less than their retail prices -- including a Wandertec Tuba Trailer.
Pledge $3079 to get this bike with a fully-loaded, extra large Wandertec Tuba Bike Trailer.
Pledge $2179 to get this bike with a fully-loaded, extra large Wandertec Tuba Bike Trailer.
Limited Edition Cufflinks
AvantGardeDesign has supported our project with five pairs of Bicycle Chain Cufflinks. Pledge $75 at the "Fancy Backer" level, and receive a pair. Until they're gone.
International Backers and Orders
If you are a backer living outside the United States of America, we may need you to kick in some extra pledge money to cover the shipping cost of your reward.
- The t-shirt will be an extra $10.
- The trailer shipping cost will vary. To estimate the shipping cost to your go to our brochure page on Bike Trailer Shop. Click "Add to Cart" and then use the shipping calculator at the bottom of the page.
How Big is the Wandertec Tuba?
Will It Work With My Bike?
Absolutely! Probably. The Wandertec Tuba Bike Trailer uses the ball-and-socket hitch system developed for Chariot Bike Child Trailers. The receiver attaches to your rear axle on the non-drive side. If you're not sure, we can help.
The hitch arm is designed for a single rear wheel so the trailer will center behind the the bike. Adapters and workarounds are available for the rare, nonstandard axle scenario.
When Will The Tuba Ship?
We expect to ship The Tuba by mid September of 2012.
