DISPELLING MYTHS ABOUT MAGNETS.
There's a misperception that magnets harm phones. That is simply not the case. Neodymium magnets are widely used within electronic devices and do not interfere with phone reception or any other phone functions. Apple iPhone and Android devices use NAND flash memory, which is immune to magnets.

What makes our mount work differently, and better than any other mount?
1). The interface uses 4 neodymium magnets that are 100% safe for your phone. They create an incredibly strong bond, yet provide an effortless release with our patent-pending twist & lift design.

We use 3M's strongest grade adhesive (for these type of applications) to bond our ultra-thin case plate to your phone case. 4 symmetrically placed circular protrusions enable phone docking, then allowing a twist to raise motion for undocking. The purposeful ergonomic case plate design feels nice to the touch, yet is barely noticeable when not using it.

7). Some computer brands and other electronics come with tethers. We felt it would be a nice accessory however it had to have the F3 Cycling stamp of Form Follows Function - So, we created a tether like no other. A few revolutions takes it on or off in seconds. We recommend using it at all times, but after watching Mike bomb down railroad tracks at 17mph, it's doubtful you'll feel the need.

A MATTER OF SAFETY.
A reflector, bell or light is one thing, but today's large smart phones can take up a lot of real estate. Space better served for things like your hands. Another safety feature of stem cap mounting is how it positions your phone in the center of your line of sight.
OTHER PHONE MOUNTS.
Biking with your phone displayed has become commonplace. More and more companies (and Kickstarter campaigns) are trying to keep up with the demand. While we want our campaign to focus on the virtues of our mount, the comparisons are worth mentioning. It won't take much online browsing time to discover the facts for yourselves.
Many mounts out there today are not very user friendly in terms of how they affix to handlebars and/or lock your phone into some sort of clamping mechanism. Not only is this a clunky look, it takes up a lot of handlebar space. That said, there are a few nice looking mounts that also that attach your phone easily. The problem is some of those require the use of specific phone cases that can bring the total package cost to well over $100 and limiting you to that company's case design. Some even use a magnet interface, but they have well documented performance issues.

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT.
Making things, and making things well for a discerning customer base is not for the faint of heart. It is expensive and decisions have to be made timely throughout the design, tooling, manufacturing and fulfillment processes. That said, we deeply understand the process.
Goal: The cleanest looking phone mount designs incorporate the use of magnets, but there are very few magnetic designs currently available. The ones out there today fall short in regards to holding power and reliability. So our goal was to change this by designing a magnetic retaining system that was powerful and reliable. With aesthetics that are clean and minimalistic, where form truly does follow function. A design that would fit onto virtually any bike with a 1 1/8” thread-less steering system, which is the overwhelming majority of bicycles built within the last 25 years. AND, it had to be easy enough for anyone to install and use with confidence. We are proud to say that we have achieved this goal with our stem cap phone mount.
Our Mount is injection molded entirely out of 40% Carbon Fiber Filled Nylon 6/6. We use this material for its strength, durability, light weight, and stiffness and beauty. The hinge bolt and nut are made out of 316 Stainless Steel, chosen for its superior corrosion resistance..
Parts: Base and Magnets.
It's form follows the needed geometry requirements to house four, .500” diameter by .375” long magnets. We are using the strongest magnets currently available, Rare Earth Neodymium, in the strongest grade, N52. These four magnets are positioned to the far corners of our mount, to offer us the greatest mechanical advantage available from our wide and flat platform like base. Our mount base geometry, magnet positioning, and Neodymium strength are all working together to give us the holding power and dynamic stability we require.
Parts: Case Side Plate.
We didn’t want to lock customers into buying a uniquely designed proprietary case. Also, from a manufacturing and price point standpoint, we did not want to create multiple case designs to fit ever changing, multiple phone models. This wouldn’t be economically feasible with our “Made in America” approach to manufacturing. So, we designed a powder coated metal plate, that attaches to compatible phone cases with an industrial strength adhesive made by 3M. This 3M VHB adhesive is a 5900 series that is industry standard, specifically designed for adhering to a broad spectrum of hard to bond surfaces, including powder coating.
Three-Fold Case Plate Challenge.
1) Make it thin enough to be as unobtrusive as possible, yet thick enough to achieve the magnetic saturation needed to meet our holding power requirements. The magic number was .060” thick.
2) Design a docking feature that positions the phone in portrait or landscape while also aiding to overcome the high pull force of the Neo magnets. The solution, four symmetrically placed circular protrusions that allow the phone to undock with a simple twist and lift motion due to the air gap created as the geometry of the design lifts the plate away from the base during the rotation.
3) Attach it to the phone case reliably - Achieved using 3M VHB 5900 series acrylic adhesive, an industry gold standard.
We created the phone component for FormMount, which gave us a design, tooling and manufacturing leg-up on getting our Stem Cap Phone Mount to market. It uses the magnets, case plate, tether anchor and tether from our phone component, so we have that manufacturing process already in place. Our local molder for the stem cap version is ready to go and has a manufacturing timeline that allows us to be confident enough to ship in June. Our hardware vendor and packaging vendors are all set with everything ready to launch.
Risks and challenges
We have planned well to get our Stem Cap Phone Mount to market timely and to specifications that meet our stringent demands. Manufacturing and real world performance is one of the biggest challenges for most Kickstarter products. In our case, as detailed above, the risk has all but been eliminated. One challenge that we anticipate (due to preliminary positive feedback) is the potential for a very high volume of sales in Kickstarter – this will create added effort in fulfillment and shipping, which we have a plan to address, and we welcome the challenge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
