Why have I decided to make this film?"
Augustines evoke an incredible sense of providence in their story, and in their music. Like the others interviewed for this film, I immediately was drawn to the band’s passion and artistry. So many people over the past few years have come together, giving selflessly to the band for one reason. Their music needed to be heard. I feel incredibly lucky to be in the unique position to make this film. Along with producer, and Big Vulture co-founder, Josh Kincaid, it is our intention that RISE transcends both music and band to stand on it's own as a truly compelling film.
This is an independent film. It is neither commissioned nor funded by the band. However, we have the blessing of all involved in the Augustines camp to document their story, with unrestricted access.
To me, what makes this film so unique are the band members. The fact that they have been through so much in their history makes the success they now have inspirational on another level altogether.
On December 8, 2014, Augustines will perform at London's prestigious Roundhouse to over 3,500 people. This show and the preceding European tour will provide a triumphant backdrop as we follow Augustines back through their history, showing just why their dedicated fan base continues to fervently grow. Augustines have something rare. Their live shows exemplify the band’s best qualities: passion and élan, heartbreak and intimacy, all imbued with a power that can barely be contained. Rarely has a rock band made their fans feel so alive.

"Living proof that the greatest art can come from the deepest tragedy" - Evening Standard
We are creating an extremely limited edition DVD book for the film. Filled with behind the scenes photos shot whilst filming, it will also feature the exclusive updated Augustines biography from Ryan Berg, author of the original extended biography, titled 'My Brother's Keeper'. This will be a true collectors item for any Augustines fan or film buff.
RISE is not a fly-on-the-wall style film. It is a much more personal & human story, the magnitude of which is what will make it's triumph all the more uplifting. In this film you will discover a band that, through both it's lyrical content and live energy, has bonded with it's fanbase in an incredibly unique way. Every fan around the world lives and breathes their honesty and depth and rejoices in it's euphoria & optimism.
We will follow frontman William McCarthy through California to hear his backstory, an almost unbelievable tale. McCarthy never knew his father. His mother's tragic suicide when he was 19 and subsequent suicide of his brother James whilst former band Pela was imploding should have (and nearly did) forced McCarthy and Eric Sanderson out of music altogether. Instead they resurrected an album from Pela's ashes and went on to become Augustines. Their debut album, titled 'Rise Ye Sunken Ships', was embraced around the world.
We will also travel with McCarthy to Folsom State Prison in California, the scene of the final years of his brother James' life, where he spent years in solitary confinement. We are working towards gaining entry to Folsom State Prison for Augustines to perform there as part of the film.
Folsom will be interspersed with the London show at the beginning and end of the film as we tell this unique story. This is a film ultimately about triumph. It's about a coming together of individuals for something greater but, most importantly, it's about how self-belief, never giving up and following your dreams can change lives.
We've already travelled to Seattle WA, where we have filmed key people involved in the 'RISE' of Augustines but there are at least 30 more people we need to interview..

- John Schaefer (WNYC New York)
- Peter Katis (Producer - Augustines, The National, Interpol)
- Scott Hutchinson (Frightened Rabbit frontman)
- Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam)
- Brian Fallon (Gaslight Anthem frontman)

There are many locations key to this film. We will need to film / interview in southern California, northern California, New York City, Brooklyn, Long Island, upstate New York, London & Europe. Other costs include additional equipment rental, reward item manufacture & fulfilment, film distribution (physical & digital), licensing of non-Augustines music. We are dedicating the next six to eight months solely to make this film and have already spent thousands of dollars and hours travelling & interviewing people. We obviously cannot make a film of this magnitude for nothing and must support ourselves whilst we are full time on this.
Most importantly, we are looking for a highly skilled editor. An editor plays an enormous part in the success or failure of a film. We will be looking to secure the best editor possible and have someone very specific in mind to help us realise our vision.

Risks and challenges
We constantly work to minimise risks across the board by planning well in advance. We have already secured the use of all Augustines music by the band's label and have obtained clearance on a huge amount of video footage.
The design teams are at work now preparing artwork for the both DVDs & other rewards and we'll be booking DVD manufacturing dates well ahead of the release time to make sure we hit our shipping targets.
Editing a film is an art form in itself. We feel it either makes or breaks a film are determined to secure our preferred editor. If we encounter timeframe issues we would prefer to wait in order to achieve the best edit possible for this film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
