About this project
THE STORY: Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story is a feature-length documentary about the massive acclaim, dismal commercial failure and enduring legacy of pop music’s greatest cult band, Big Star.
BACKGROUND: Just days before Big Star was to play their high-profile showcase at SXSW their legendary frontman Alex Chilton tragically passed away after a massive heart attack. The band and their legions of fans were completely shocked and sad beyond words but against all odds the remaining members of Big Star - Jody Stephens, Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer – reached out to the SXSW community and pulled together an all-star group of musicians including original band member Andy Hummel, Mike Mills of R.E.M., John Doe of X, M. Ward, Evan Dando of The Lemonheads, The Watson Twins, Sondre Lerche, Curt Kirkwood of the Meat Puppets, Chris Stamey of the dB’s and many more for an unforgettable tribute show to the late, great Alex Chilton.
THE FILM: Luckily, we were there to film this incredible event. That very night, the remaining Big Star members agreed to play one last tribute show to Alex on May 15th in Big Star’s hometown of Memphis, TN. The Memphis tribute show will take place at the Overton Park Bandshell where Big Star played a legendary concert in 1973 that was later released as the live album “Nobody Can Dance.” Most likely this will be the very last Big Star show ever but we need your help to capture this all-star tribute to one of the greatest songwriters of our time, Alex Chilton. Nothing Can Hurt Me: The Big Star Story has been in production since 2007 and we’ve filmed nearly 100 hours of footage so far and gained access to amazing archival footage, unreleased tracks and rarely seen photos of the band through cooperation with Ardent Studios.. After this shoot and additional interviews in Memphis we’ll be able to wrap filming and start editing the film. Our goal is to finish by the end of 2010 then premiere at a major film festival in 2011. But we need your help to do it!!!
WHAT WE NEED: Along with filming the tribute show, our documentary crew will be in Memphis for the entire month of May completing the final stages of our production on the film. Until now we have been self-financing the film. But in order to finish the project, we need your support. The money you pledge will go to crucial production needs like equipment rental, housing for the entire month, transportation, etc. Many of you have been waiting eagerly to see this film (so have we!) but we really need your support in the final stretch of our journey to bring The Big Star Story to life! May 15th is fast approaching so we need your help ASAP. Big pledges, little pledges, whatever you can give will help us tremendously. If you love this band as much as we do please help! Your support is invaluable to help bring The Big Star Story to completion and hopefully soon in theaters / DVD!
YOUR REWARD? We have some truly amazing rewards to offer for your support of the film.
*THE SUPPLY OF PREMIUMS IS NOT INFINITE. SO PLEDGE EARLY.
PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD!!! WE ONLY HAVE TWO WEEKS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN SO LET'S DO THIS!!!
