Orion's Odyssey: A Pattern Blocks Adventure is a comedy-puzzle game with memorable characters, a strong emphasis on presentation and a whole lot of heart. Follow Orion, an alien robot with the fantastic ability to construct any object he can think of, as he journeys around our planet to help everyone he comes across, whether they ask for it or not! Together with his sidekick Ryan, a hyperactive seven-year old with a thirst for adventure, they will journey across ten unique levels filled with zany characters, odd creatures and a plethora of puzzles to solve!
Multiple game modes!
In Adventure mode, follow Orion's journey on the top screen, and help him get out of tight spots and tough situations by solving puzzles on the bottom touch screen! Then, watch the items you create appear in Orion's world, often with hilarious results!
At any point in the adventure, players can revisit any previously solved puzzles in Free-play mode. Find interesting and new solutions to puzzles to earn more points and unlock cool bonuses!
While Adventure mode was designed to be accessible for all players, we made Challenge mode with the hardcore puzzle aficionado in mind. Players will find that all the puzzles in the game have added stipulations, including restrictions on what pieces they can use, while some puzzles have been completely changed from the ground up.
Finally, players can let their creativity soar in Sandbox mode, where players can create their own patterns using the touch screen and stylus.
Unique scoring system!
The fun of pattern block puzzles is that they can be solved in a variety of ways, so we wanted to reward players for utilizing their creativity. After solving a puzzle, the player is rewarded points using a scoring system that rewards efficient and creative play. Challenge yourself to try and solve puzzles using the least amount of pieces, or find other unique solutions to maximize your score in each level!
Dozens of extras!
In order to make the game a rewarding experience, we included lots of unlock-able extra content! In the store, players can use the points they've earned while playing the game to buy a variety of bonus content from Paul Buckley, Pattern Blocks premier vendor. We've included several galleries of production and marketing artwork, the ability to play any music track, full bios for every character in the game, and more!
Gorgeous sprite artwork!
As a team comprised of longtime gamers, it was a priority not just to have an art style that appealed to a wide audience, but to make the game look as nice as it played. So we took our all of our concept art and rendered them into a fully realized world.
Island Officials is an independent game developer based in Woodbury, New Jersey. Originally founded in 2006 by CEO Ryan Morrison and COO Ryan Harbinson in Morrison’s basement, we've now grown into a company of over 30 tirelessly working individuals with several completed digital and analog games under our belt, including Hands On! Tangrams for the Nintendo DS.
Our goal is to deliver a variety of gaming experiences across multiple genres and platforms with a focus on quality, presentation and of course, fun. That being said, the Orion's Odyssey team's goal from the beginning has been to create a puzzle game that didn't just have the wide appeal and accessibility expected by the Nintendo DS' main audience, but also delivered an experience that would engage, satisfy and charm the pants off the core gaming audience as well.
Orion's Odyssey: A Pattern Blocks Adventure has been a passion project for our studio over the past two years. The game is a spiritual successor to our first title, Hands On! Tangrams, a casual puzzle game that blended a professional presentation with tight controls and strong mechanics rarely seen in smaller titles. While we were proud of our freshmen efforts, we recognized that the game was somewhat minimal. We really listened to all of the critical feedback we got from Tangrams and set out to make a follow up that was not just better in every aspect, but added ton of content and a sense of adventure. We invested a lot of time and money into the game, hoping to see it hit store shelves before the Nintendo DS shelf life had expired.
As we began wrapping post-production, we worked feverishly to find a publisher in hopes of getting the game on a physical cartridge and in stores. While they all had great things to say about our game and our efforts, they wanted to move away from Nintendo DS to other digital markets including the new 3DS system, as well as mobile phones and tablets.
Last month we launched a campaign to raise over $85K to get the game to a physical form. After 30 days of campaigning we decided to bring the game to the downloadable marketplace of Nintendo's DSiWare, which is also accessible via the eShop on 3DS units. While pursuing a digital release of the game through either DSiWare or 3DS eShop is now a reality. We wanted Orion's Odyssey to be available to the widest possible audience, however the physical copy of the game is significantly higher than the digital but we gave it our all and the back up plan is now in full effect.
We need YOUR help to make it happen!
For the past two years, we poured countless hours of time, love and passion into creating a great game that we truly believe in. Despite our best efforts, we need one final push to deliver it to you in the way it was originally intended. With your and Kickstarter's help, we can make Orion's Odyssey a reality!
Under the leadership of our art director, Karen McKenna, the Orion's Odyssey art team did an amazing job converting Matt McKenna's concept art into a fully realized world, complete with detailed background illustrations and beautifully animated sprite artwork.
Every scene in the game features unique animations, sequences and characters. Scenes were read aloud and acted out by members of the development team to make sure we got each character's personality quirks to come through in their actions. We drew each sprite animation out, then traced over them digitally before adding the final details and polish and inserting them into the game.
With an emphasis on fantastic presentation, we knew the music for Orion's Odyssey needed to be top-notch. Thankfully, we already had the perfect candidate; Wayne Strange, who also composed the music for our previous title, Hands On! Tangrams.
An expert in his field, Wayne currently serves as an assistant and additional arranger for the Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses worldwide concert tour. Recently he's worked as a music assistant on the Hollywood film, Little Boy, starring Kevin James and several AAA video game titles, including the recently released God of War: Ascension and Star Trek The Video Game, which will release later this spring.
But don't take our word for it that he's awesome; take a listen for yourself with these samples from Orion's Odyssey!

Risks and challenges
Of course with any project there is always a chance, however small, of setbacks, and this is especially true of video games. Acts of God, unavoidable delays, and other similar events could happen. However, the game is DONE, including all marketing and video materials needed to be submitted for certification through Nintendo of America and the ESRB, so while those unknown factors still exist, they are a much smaller percentage compared to a game still in production. In addition, we have the 3D printer and designs to make or purchase all of your physical rewards if you choose those tiers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
We are working with NOE and Pegi to have the game approved for Europe and other countries outside the US, the game is in English however just to give you a heads up.
OK so you figure on what you want and after the campaign closes I will be adding the bumps to the survey to record who gets what etc. I think this will work best overall and if we need to use an outside tool we will but I think the survey generator will be fine.
Just add $10 to your pledge amount and we will make sure we send you a second DL code.
The money will be used to procure the DL codes from Nintendo, cover testing at an external company and finalize a few fees and minor costs in between. It also covers the KS/Amazon portion and some of the shipping charges that will happen with some of the physical rewards we posted.
