It's time for me to make an album, and I need your HELP!
My name is Bobby. I'm an independent singer-songwriter originally from New York City but currently I live in Seoul, South Korea. Some people know me by my stage name Big Phony. In Korea, F's are hard to pronounce so here they call me Big PONY.
Recently I've hit the 10 year mark for my career as Big Phony, which has been associated as a lo-fi project some might say, much of it recorded in my bedroom just like my last album "BOBBY". It wasn't a bad album but I still believe it could have been so much more had I asked for some help (something I'm terrible at). The last time I actually released a studio recorded album was in 2009 with my 3rd project Kicking Punching Bags, produced by Jason Hiller.
The past few years in Korea I've been growing as a songwriter and integrating new life and musical experiences to my work. I moved here from the US to find a missing part of myself and I have to say it's been life changing to say the least. Since my last release I've written upward of 70+ songs. Many of them love songs, to give you a hint. Honestly, I had been planning to record a new album since well over a year ago but because of lack of funding it's been difficult to make things happen. Now, I'm ready and fired up to record a 6th full length album. I could really use some help though.
I've always dreamed of what it would be like to record an album like my heroes, on analog tape with hi-fi gear. I also figured I could never do so without a major label backing me or without winning the lotto. I happened to mention this to a good friend of mine Goh Nakamura (fellow singer-songwriter & a hi-fi junkie) and he actually convinced me that it would be more than possible.
Goh said something along the lines of "you're an idiot if you think people wouldn't want to help you, Big Pony." So he helped me come up with a reasonable plan and a modest budget.
- Record 10 songs in 4-5 days
- Mix for 2-3 days
- Using Analog Tape
- Wow your socks off
The plan is to record with Goh and an engineer in Stinson Beach, California. We have an opportunity to record at an artist retreat/studio where we can also lodge at. We had to act quickly, so we booked and put a partial deposit down already.
In order to make it work here's where we need additional help and why we've looked to Kickstarter.
- Studio/Lodge Rental 7 days/nights - $2700
- Producer - $1000 min (Should be more but Goh is being unreasonable)
- Engineer (7 days @ $300) - $2100
- Record to tape - $1035
- Mixing $600
- Studio Musicians - $1000 min
- Mastering - $1000
- Graphic Design - $500 min
- CD Replication (1000 CDs) - $923 min (For standard sleeve packaging)
- Sandwiches - ?
- Kickstarter Fees - $1100 min
- T̶r̶a̶v̶e̶l̶ ̶f̶o̶r̶ ̶B̶o̶b̶b̶y̶ - $0 *
*Upon telling my mom about this project she went ahead sent me the funds to purchase a flight from Seoul to San Francisco. So my flight has been covered thanks to mom!
This is a budget drawn up on bare minimum expense and favors. With any additional funding we would be able to accomplish greater feats of course such as attempting a bigger sound, bringing in additional session players, pay mom back!, additional studio time, vinyl production, marketing, music video(s)! and more...
Here are some of the contenders for the album in DEMO form:
Here's some examples of past Big Phony music:

Thank you everyone for your consideration and support. I hope to have for you a fine finished album as soon as possible whether we reach our Kickstarter goal or not. Actually, I should be more positive and say "when we reach our goal!" As the Koreans say, "FIGHTING!!" Blessings to you and your loved ones. Go and kick ass in all that you do.
With love and respect,
bobby choy (big Phony)

Risks and challenges
I think we have a pretty solid plan and I think Goh and I are passionate and excited enough to see this through to completion. With that said I know that things don't always pan out perfectly the way you envision. We don't have a staff working with us so most of the work will be done by myself and Goh. Please be patient with us if it takes longer than expected to receive a response with regards to awards, etc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
