Dodgy Dealers - The Black Market Art Dealing Card Game

€7,500

230

In Dodgy Dealers, 2-4 players (up to 12 players with expansions) race to complete their collection and cash in on their contracts. Throughout the game you source your art exclusively on the black market, which is unfortunately full of forgeries and questionable characters. Be the first to reach four genuine contracted artworks to win the game.

"Conscience is a man's compass"  -  Vincent Van Gogh

"...What way does your compass point?"  -  Some Dodgy Dealer

  • Forgeries, Fakes and Fakers! - Work your way through the game by determining which artworks are genuine and which are forgeries. Fake paintings aren't worth anything, but keeping them in your gallery might make opponents think they're authentic!
  • Multiple paths to victory - Stage heists and steal paintings from opposing players or work through the Black Market to be the first Dodgy Dealer to fulfil their contract.
  • Completely open trading system - Trades can be struck between any players on a one-for-one basis. Trade face up or face down, be honest or be deceitful, even trade contracts and completely mix up gameplay!
  • Be secretive - Players must leave their gallery of paintings facedown on the table and may only rearrange them during their own turn.
  • Be cunning - The pick up and discard systems allow players to develop complex strategies; like removing opponents desired cards out of the game or discarding one of your own contracted paintings temporarily for safety.
  • Designed with REAL artworks. Dodgy Dealers features paintings of Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch and John Singer Sargent. Eight more artists will be revealed throughout the campaign as add-ons / expansions.
  • Change the art or invite more to the party - These add-on packs add additional artists of various styles and nationality into the game as well as increasing the game size by two players. Every game comes with enough cards for a four player game but is compatible with up to twelve.

For each player, add one set of Artist’s cards to the main deck and add the contract card for that artist to a separate pile. Shuffle both piles of cards and deal out five paintings and one contract card to everyone.

Every contract card is unique and tells you which artist's works you are being paid to collect; Van Gogh, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch and James Singer Sargent.

The game is set up as shown above. At the start of each round deal X amount of cards from the Black Market Deck face up onto the Black Market Section. (X = half the total amount of players rounded upwards - for example the above picture would suit a 9 or 10 player game)

A players hand is called a 'gallery'. Players keep all their cards face down in front of them, in their own private gallery, keeping them both accessible and secret to other players. Each round players take turns acquiring a new painting and discarding one - keeping a total of five paintings in their gallery at all times. These artworks can be acquired from many different places;

  • The Black Market - Pick from an openly displayed selection of art. Genuine paintings are often snapped up quickly!
  • The Black Market Deck - Draw a random card from the top of the deck. Are you feeling lucky?
  • Storage - Pick from the discarded cards from the previous round. Maybe your opponents are trying to sneakily shift a painting you're looking for...
  • Shipping - Pick from the discarded cards from two rounds ago. Change of Mind? Maybe you tactically have safely hidden a painting so you can retrieve it later.
  • Other players galleries! - Plan a heist and steal a facedown card from an opponents gallery! To some people stopping someone else from winning can be better than the victory.

It's important to note that during the game players can only handle one gallery card per hand. And may only rearrange their gallery during their own Black Market turn or after making a trade.

Each round consists of Four Phases, Two of which are conditional;

  • Black Market Phase
  • Trading Phase (If two or more want to trade)
  • Heist Phase (If someone wants to steal a painting)
  • Scoring / Set Up Phase

Black Market Phase

During the Black Market Phase players take turns acquiring a new artwork and discarding one. On their turn they may re-arrange their artworks both before and after swapping out cards until they end their turn. Players do not have to pick up a card (unless they've less than five cards) and cannot if they wish to steal from an opponents gallery during the Heist Phase. If a player has less than five cards (a victim of a heist from the previous round), they draw until they've got five cards and then take their Black Market turn as normal.

Trading Phase

An open round of trading starts if two or more players wish to trade this turn. Trades can be discussed at any time throughout the game but can only be made during a trading phase. After a trade is completed the participants of the trade my rearrange their galleries if they wish.

Heist Phase

If a player didn’t pick up an optional card during their Black Market Phase they can now stage a heist at the cost of missing the next turn. Discard one card, pick another player and select one of their face down paintings. Add that painting to your collection and remove all your cards from the table for the next turn. The victim of the heist draws a replacement card on their next active round. Heists must be done simultaneously step-by-step.

  • Discard a card and select an opponent.
  • Steal a selected painting.
  • Remove all your gallery cards from the table for one turn.

If both players are trying to steal the same piece of art, round order determines who gets to steal it. The player who doesn't get the selected painting doesn't have to miss the following turn.

Scoring / Set Up Phase

After the heist phase if any player has four or more contracted paintings and presents themselves - they win the game. If playing as a series of games, each player notes their score before setting up for the next game.

If no-one presents themselves begin setting up for the following round; Move all untaken Black Market cards into the round discard pile and then move all discard piles one step closer to being 'out of play'. Turn order changes, players due to re-enter the game place their cards back on the table and fresh Black Market cards are dealt before the first player starts a new Black Market Phase.

So how can you tell if your Van Gogh is a REAL Van Gogh? ...By Examining it of course! To an Expert Art Dealer like yourself the genuine painting will be as apparent as a little red seal of authenticity in the corner of the card.

Take a look at the example below of two printed cards, can you tell which Sunflowers is real?

...Of course you can! The Sunflowers on the right side is the genuine artwork. Visually the seal of authenticity is the only difference between the two and can easily be covered up if you decide to quickly flash your card to another dealer!

Dodgy Dealers contains a total of 80 cards. Each box comes with 24 genuine textured works of art and 48 matching Forgeries (making a total of 72 artworks in the box). Also included are 4 contract cards, 4 double sided rule cards and once unlocked an additional 8 double sided reference cards.

The double sided reference cards will accompany each artist and provide additional information about them as well as the different works of art featured in the game. Additionally the rules are broken down across four double sided rule cards that can also function as reference cards to be used throughout the game if needed.

"I find Dodgy Dealers to be a good game for friends who want to play something a step up from Cards Against Humanity, or Apples to Apples. It’s not complicated. It’s easy to teach. It also quickly develops a ridiculous meta between its players."

Although the base game of Dodgy Dealers is a 2-4 player game; gameplay can easily be expanded to up to 12 players with the addition of expansion packs. Each add on will add a total of two new artists and their artworks as well as increase the total number of players by two. During the course of the campaign we will be unveiling a total of four different expansions, which cover a selection of famous artists, nationalities and art movements.

Each add on includes a total of 42 cards; 6 genuine textured works of art, 12 forgeries, 2 reference cards (once unlocked) and 1 contract card per artist. All stored in a tuck box.

These expansions can be bought individually by increasing your pledge by €6 or collectively by selecting 'The Black Marketeer' or 'The Collector' pledge levels.

Both 'The Black Marketeer' and 'The Collector' pledge levels come with an exclusive collectors edition box that is designed to store the base game cards plus all four additional artist packs.

I've added a playmat as an add on as requested by quite a number of backers! If you'd like to upgrade your gameplay with this 12x14 inch cloth playmat, simply add 14 euro to your pledge.

It's no secret that I've always been a huge fan of Kickstarter (Just ask any of my friends). In a past life I even used to review video games that were on Kickstarter, every month picking my top 3 recommendations as well as including some honourable mentions.

To me, Kickstarter is one of those great platforms that links together people with similar interests and allows them to get behind other peoples dreams and ideas. It links creators directly with an amazing community and allows people like me to fund an idea I otherwise would've been unable to do.

I'm a big believer in Kickstarter and I've backed over 80 other projects over the years. My one regret is that I wished I had the money to fund hundreds of other deserving projects. With that in mind, I'm proud to be supporting the idea of  Kicking It Forward! If the project gets funded 5% of any profits made from Dodgy Dealers will be used to back other projects and make other peoples dreams a reality. For more information check out Kicking it Forward.

Dodgy Dealers has an admittedly low Kickstarter goal for two reasons. I've already personally invested quite a bit into the project and its priced to secure the very minimum amount needed for a very small limited print run.

As the project is already 95% finished and manufacturing quotes have already been secured; as soon as the Kickstarter funds are transferred production can be started. The printing of the game and boxes, once started, will be finished within a week, the packaging and fufilment will take quite a while longer.

Heres a quick breakdown of the months following the Kickstarter.

My name is Kieran Murphy, I go by the creative name of Big Man Murph. I'm a tinkerer in everything creative. From Recording Engineering to Programming to Web Design to Graphics Design. I've always had a love of games and have decided to finally take my very first step into the world of card game design. Dodgy Dealers has been in my head for sometime. Its gone through several versions but now its finally time to set it free.

I've close ties to the print industry as well as previous project management experience, hence my confidence in taking on such a large project all by myself.

The Artworks that are featured in this game are only artworks that are considered Public Domain. All images and graphics used in the making of this game have been a acquired legally through use of creative commons websites and images. In almost all cases the artworks have been altered or changed in some regard to enhance quality while still remaining as true as possible to the original piece of art. The artworks used in the game are not key elements to gameplay but only further submerge players into a thematic experience.

Reference Cards exist in the game to respectfully attribute the original works and the artists that created them as well as the establishments that house them. It is NOT and has never been my intention to profit off the work of other Artists, I am just a lover of Art and greatly appreciate the works of those featured throughout this project.

Risks and challenges

As this is my first official Kickstarter as a sole creator, as such it has been planned extensively since June and I am confident that it will be made and delivered in good time. Unexpected or unforeseen circumstances could arise in terms of delaying the project but that is the only risk.

The game itself has been in development for quite some time and after hundreds of play tests and reiterations it is now at a state ready to share with the world. Dodgy Dealers is a completed game, it just requires your help to fund its production.

About 90% of all graphic design has already been completed. It just has to go over a final stage of polish / review. Graphics, Artworks and sample cards shown are subject to change. The card art itself can be easily swapped out - which will speed up design during the voting process and the overall finalising stages.

A manufacturing company has been selected with quotes valid beyond the campaign end date. They have the capacity to print all items required for all pledge levels within a very short period of time. The game will be manufactured and produced 100% within Ireland.

I have had extensive discussions with fulfilment companies and they are ready to deliver the game as soon as the game is printed, pressed and packaged.

Dodgy Dealers has received many different independent reviews all of which have been positive. These prototypes were commissioned especially to obtain an independent opinion as well as show my ability to produce, manage and fulfil my promises.

I aim to get the game to you by February or earlier. As all parts will be made by the one company and all aspects of the project will be overseen by myself, design/production/fulfilment times are cut. I truthfully expect to be fully finished by the end of January but I am leaving one month as a contingency plan.

I have completed as much as physically possible ahead of launching this Kickstarter to minimise the time between your investment and getting the game to you.

I would just like to thank everyone who has taken the time to read, consider and back this project. You are funding more than just the production of this project. You are funding my dreams as well as fuelling my passion to continue creating games in the future.

Thank You.
