About this project
This Kickstarter has been an amazing experience and Carand and I are so grateful for your support. The collaborative power of printmaking has brought us together to do great things. This next juncture promises a wealth of opportunity, and we are happy to have you along for the ride! Enclosed trailer at $9,000...
Owning an enclosed trailer, Smart Car not included :), would be a huge money and time saver. We wouldn't have to pay rental fees. Plus there would be no need to unload the press in order to return the rental trailer to a dealer after every event.
Our stretch goals of micrometer gauges at $6,500 and a lightweight bed plate at $7,200 have been achieved. Yay!
These micrometer gauge provides easy-to-repeat, precise settings. They come in handy for printing woodblocks that are different thicknesses. We will have the ability to adjust the top printing roller by about the same thickness as a human hair!
This high density, laminate printing bed has a compression strength of 29,000 P.S.I. and it weighs 1/6th the amount of steel. Lighter is certainly better when traveling!
We are passionate about woodcut printmaking in a big way.
Hi! My name is Lyell Castonguay. I am a visual artist and printmaker. Relief printmaking, aka "woodcut printmaking," is my passion. Woodcut involves hand carving an image into the plank side of a piece of wood. It requires practice, patience, and a bit of luck! But the results are nothing short of remarkable. I particularly enjoy working large scale, typically 24" x 36" or larger. The physicality of the process suits me. In 2012 my partner Carand Burnet and I started BIG INK. It began as a means to share our printmaking enthusiasm with others.
Our dream is to bring large woodcut printing to artists everywhere. Printmaking is a beautiful art medium but the large scale process poses challenges. The machinery used to print these woodcuts is expensive and can only be found at specialized print studios. We have started this Kickstarter to help raise funds to purchase our very own portable large format printing press! In doing so, we will bring our collaborative BIG INK program to artists all over the country, including museums, schools, and art centers. To date, BIG INK has helped over thirty artists from thirteen states produce new large woodcuts. Now we need your help to reach many, many more!
To art school and beyond!
When Carand and I graduated with BFA degrees in 2010 we began searching for people who shared our creative interests. An internship prompted us to move to Easthampton, MA, an arts oriented town in the Pioneer Valley. We figured a good way to introduce ourselves was through woodcut related public projects. One such project was "Heartwood", an 8' x 8' relief image hand carved into the side of a building in downtown. Watch us make the giant woodcut mural in the video below!
In another local project funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, we hand printed large woodcuts on the street and invited bystanders to help. A good portion of our audience were other artists interested in creating their own monumental woodcut. So Carand and I decided to share our acquired technical knowledge. We approached a nearby print shop, Zea Mays Printmaking, to see if they would host a collaborative printing event. The idea was simple. Artists were invited to meet at a nearby print shop, discuss materials and techniques, and collaboratively print each others' woodblocks. This working model soon became the framework for what is now BIG INK.
BIG INK isn't just an event, it's also an ongoing, collaborative body of work that's meant to be seen and appreciated. At each BIG INK event we request ownership of one print from each participant to archive in our BIG INK portfolio, which travels to exhibitions across the US and internationally. Our most recent exhibition at the Seoul Museum of Art was a huge success! Twenty prints from the portfolio were exhibited during The Korean Contemporary Printmakers Association Annual Exhibition. Even though we only meet with participating artists for a short while, BIG INKers remain connected through exhibits like the one in Seoul.
In the past we've been fortunate enough to partner with rad printmaking studios including: Pickwick Independent Press, AS220 Printshop, Zea Mays Printmaking, Whiteaker Printmakers, and the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, where we had access to the specialized tools needed for large format printing. BIG INK will continue to collaborate with print studios, hosting events at their facilities, but we're looking forward to taking the large woodcut revolution on the road!
A mobile press that brings woodcut to anyone, anywhere.
We need your help to reach the museums, schools, and art centers who want to host a BIG INK event. These organizations don't own the proper equipment but fortunately we have an answer. Introducing the 48" x 96" mobile printmaking press - a machine that's ready to roll!
Given its lightweight, modular construction, this press can easily be rolled into a trailer and towed anywhere. We are creating a portable printing studio and bringing it directly to the community
We need a total of $11,000 dollars to cover all the expenses associated with the press and running this campaign. Below is a breakout of our three funding sources.
We've already placed a $2,500 down payment on this “bad boy press,” and the city of Easthampton recently awarded BIG INK an additional $2,500 funded through Hatch. We're at 45% of our total funding goal! But we need your help to secure the remaining $6,000.
Funds raised as a result of this campaign will be used to complete the purchase of the press and a heavy duty rolling stand. If we exceed $6,000, we will have awesome stretch goals including new woodcut goodies and press hardware upgrades.
100% Woodcut Awesomeness
All the rewards listed below have been designed by us for this campaign. We are hand printing everything (except the temporary tattoos) directly from the original woodcut carvings. Wanna original woodcut tee, tote, print, etc? You've come to the right place!
Thank you for backing our project! Please follow and share on Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr. Also, sign up for our newsletter to receive updates. Word of mouth is key so please tell your loved ones. We appreciate your support!
Risks and challenges
We will have a lot of goods to produce. A great challenge to have! The delivery date is July but we anticipate shipping rewards sooner. We are already looking for venues to host events using the new press.
