WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
I was awarded the first ever grant of $1,000 from the Awesome Foundation based on my interest in bringing people together through design of public art and objects. The grant supports people doing awesome things around the world and acknowledges the individual that evokes surprises without the prospect of audience or profit.
THE AWESOME IDEA........
The awesome idea is to design, build and install a big hammock in the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, a new 15 acres public parkland that replaced a mile long elevated highway connecting Boston’s most diverse neighborhood.
NEED FOR THE ARTWORLD
There is a rich cultural history of hammocks within the arts, as a woven net or fabric cloth, they are simple in gesture, form and execution. Situating a hammock within a public park can elevate the social implication of that object. The hammock is intended to serve the community as a simple lounge space as well as a sculptural expression. It is intended to create a new way to interact with and admire the urban and historical setting, complimenting the Greenway as space of public leisure. At the intersection of Oliver Street and Atlantic Avenue, the 8’ x 38’ wide hammock will be located at Parcel 19 in the Fort Point Channel Parks area. The hammock will be on a self supporting steel frame and hang 36” high from the ground. One may think of the hammock as a new suspended common ground where the individual’s weight, size and position are in concert with other bodies on the hammock. It is a social ground.
The volunteer team to build the hammock in August is comprised of designers, students, and faculty brought together by design professor and architect, Hansy Better Barraza. Together with Textile Collaborator Ruth Bohn, Structural Engineer Erik Nelson, and enthusiastic volunteers, the hope is to create an interactive symbol of community.
Please help us fund this project by making a pledge on Kickstarter. Funding received through Kickstarter will be used for the frame’s material and fabrication costs. For a more detailed breakdown of our costs, you can download the PDF here.
