This campaign will fund the printing of Hunter Black Volume One: Betrayer’s Blood. Betrayer’s Blood is going to be a trade paperback with over 250 pages of story along with some of the bells and whistles that readers want in their collected editions, like notes from the creation of the webcomic, an overview of what goes into a page, script samples, and even a map of our setting, The Known World.
Hunter Black is what happens when a pair of long-time D&D players read Darwyn Cooke’s adaptations of the Parker novels: hard-boiled fantasy. Think Chinatown set in Middle-Earth starring Samurai Jack.
Once upon a time, Hunter Black was the world’s most notorious archer and assassin. That all ended when the people that hired him betrayed him, and he was arrested and thrown into the Hell Pyramid, a prison-mine for the Known World’s worst criminals. Hunter escaped, but not before contracting the horrific wasting disease known as the Hunger Blight, a disease controlled only by The Revenger, the magic sword he carries…but Hunter is an archer not a swordsman! All he wants is to live long enough to get revenge on the people that betrayed him, but if that’s going to happen, he’ll need to learn the way of the sword.
Hunter Black launched as a long-form webcomic in July of 2011, and currently updates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. It’s written by Justin Peniston with art by William Orr. All of the lettering and logo design is done by Jacob Bascle.
If you really want to know what Hunter Black is, check it out from the beginning!
Justin Peniston and William Orr are Big & Tall Tales, Inc., creators of comics and cartoons, and Hunter Black is their flagship creation.
Justin has written for Marvel Animation (Avengers Assemble!), DC Comics (Blue Beetle, JSA), Man of Action (Ben 10), IDW (Eternal Descent), and Space Goat Publishing (Evil Dead 2, Rocket Queen and The Wrench). He's the one that looks like someone who never talks to be people in the video.
William Orr is the creator and artist of Dash Steel (Zuda Comics) as well as Hunter Black. He’s also done freelance illustration in advertising. He's the one in a tie...because we were getting ready to play D&D, and who doesn't wear a tie for that?
Jacob Bascle is…well, he’s the man. He is the man behind Freemind Graphx Design, as well as the head of Production and Design for both Space Goat Publishing and Visionary Comics.
Our goal of $16,000 is enough to cover the printing of 1,000 copies of Betrayer’s Blood and having them shipped to us. They will be available for sale on our website and we’ll be taking them to conventions in and around California. This will be a 276-page book, with 264 pages of story. This is a complete story, too…you don’t NEED Volume Two to get the conclusion, you’ll just WANT Volume Two for the next story!
We will be doing our printing through Print Ninja, because their mascot is dressed like Hunter Black at the end of our first chapter. (Also we like their quality and their pricing.)
Building and Printing: $9,078.83
Shipping (to us): $1,305.03
Shipping (to you): approximately $3,840.00*
Kickstarter Fees: ~$1,500.00
* = we calculated the “shipping to you” costs by figuring that 250 would contribute at a level that required us to ship them books weighing four pounds, at the standard first-class rate.

Risks and challenges
The truth of the matter is, we’ve never done anything like this before. We are rookies, we are neophytes…we are NOOBS.
We’ve researched shipping costs and packaging materials, we’ve priced out our printing, we know who is going to “build” the book for us and what that is going to cost. Jacob, our design guru, DOES have a lot of experience with this; like we’ve said elsewhere, he handles production design for TWO comic book companies.
Moreover, the creative work is all done. All 264 pages of story going into the book have been finished already. All we have left to do is secure someone awesome to write an introduction for us, and compile the notes and sketches we'll use to demonstrate our process.
Most of all, both Will and I have a towering fear of looking like amateurs. We will bend over backwards to make sure that we honor every promise and fulfill every reward.
We’d never done a webcomic before Hunter Black, it’s important to point out, and we attacked it with one simple rule: NEVER MISS A DAY. When we posted every Tuesday and Friday, a comic went up every Tuesday and Friday. Now, a comic goes up every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The only time we’ve ever deviated from schedule was to offer MORE pages, never fewer. We’ve never missed a day. We’ve never needed a guest comic.
We recognize that there are risks and challenges. We’re simply going to overcome them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
