Build it better.

We all have had our electronics fail on us. Screens break, batteries won't hold a charge, something goes wonky and you have to make a choice between hefty repair costs or buying a new device. Here at Bibliatek we believe that products should be built to last a lifetime and should be easy to fix. Our goal is to put the customer first and build products that last a lifetime and can be easily repaired or upgraded by anyone with tools that the majority of us have around the house.

Make it indestructible.

In the past water and technology rarely mixed well. With Bibliatek, water is no longer a concern as it will be constructed with a silicon gasket between the screen face and frame, and will have silicon plugs protecting the USB and audio ports.

Buy it once.

By using all aluminum construction, shatter resistant glass, and standard connectors on all of it's components, we have designed Bibliatek to last you a lifetime. If a part breaks, it is easy to find another one and replace it. When technology progresses, it will be easy to upgrade. If you run out of space, it will be a simple task to add more memory. Simply put, the Bibliatek will last longer than any other e-reader on the market.

Read Easier.

Bibliatek has a large e-Paper display. At 7.5" and 300 dpi our screen is larger and just as sharp as the competitor's model. We use top quality e-Paper so that Bibliatek causes no eye strain, and is even easy to read in full sunlight. The supported formats are AZW, AZW3, AZW4, CBZ, CBR, CBC, CHM, DJVU,  DOCX, EPUB, FB2, FBZ, HTML, HTMLZ, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB,  PML, RB, RTF, SNB, TCR, TXT, TXTZ, MP3, and more!

Read Longer.

Did you know that lithium-type batteries only have a shelf life of 3 years and develop "battery memory" even faster than that? Battery memory, or memory effect, is the slow decline of a battery's voltage caused by cycles of charging and discharging over a period of time. In short this means that the battery in your shiny new device will eventually stop working. With a Bibliatek, once this happens you can simply unscrew the battery cylinder (like a flashlight) and put new rechargeable AA's in it. Bibliatek will even remember the page you are on and continue to display your book while you change the batteries.

Bring it along.

At only 8"x5"x0.5" and less than a pound, Bibliatek is compact and light enough to take it anywhere. Whether on your daily commute or an international flight, you can be sure that Bibliatek will keep you entertained. Since it is built to take a beating, you can throw it in your bag on the way out the door free from the worry of a broken device when you are ready to use it.

Keep a whole library.

Bibliatek can hold over 170,000 books, that's more than 10 times the storage space that our largest competitor's device can hold. Bibliatek can be easily expanded with a micro-SD card for even more memory too!

More than just books.

Why limit a device to only a few types of files? Bibliatek is a fully functional computer and can read any e-book format, play any music, and also includes an office suite for working on the go.

Right to repair.

We fully embrace the right to repair. The parts are all easily obtainable and the entire design of Bibliatek is focused on being easy to repair with nothing more than a standard screwdriver.

Connect.

Bibliatek has built-in wifi and bluetooth, a USB port, and an audio port. This enables you to transfer your files, listen to your music, and read your e-mail and other documents no matter where you are or what kind of connection is available.

Completely Hackable.

From the software to the hardware, Bibliatek is completely open-source. Tinkering and modifying is encouraged. This will allow for a huge number of upgrades that can be applied to your device, developed by designers and programmers all over the world. With a GNU public license all of these modifications will be available to download for free.

Easy to upgrade.

Bibliatek is powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero, so rest assured that upgrades and parts will be readily available in the future. All of the components use industry standard connectors, so replacing the other modules is a breeze.

Ok, so you know what Bibliatek is, but what can it do?

Currently Bibliatek can:

  • Create and read almost all document formats for easy reading on the go.
  • Play music and audio books.
  • Create, modify, and display LibreOffice files except slideshows. Libre Impress is a bit slow, but we are working on improving the display render speed.
  • Read and display e-mail.
  • Surf the web, though it's in black and white and not yet fast enough for video. The video looks choppy and it the display changes about every second or so.
  • Can create, modify, and compile source code. So far C++ and python have been tested.

Please Note:  The video shows the proof-of-concept prototype at 2x speed because of our video time goal of 2 minutes. The prototype does everything as it's supposed to and has the same specs, but it is thicker than it needs to be and is not solid aluminum. It does run on AA batteries and functions as an e-reader as it should. We have made huge leaps at increasing the page loading and response time using a modified firmware allowing for a partial refresh from 16s load time to around 1 second, but more work needs to be done. By supporting the campaign, you help advance this process significantly. A video showing the concept prototype's actual speed is at the bottom of this page.

Risks and challenges

Creating a new product that will not likely need to be replaced requires a completely different business model than a typical manufacturer uses. Modern corporations design a product to fail within a specific period of time, thereby ensuring that a consumer will continue to buy new products or parts from them consistently. We at Bibliatek believe that most people are fed up with this business model. Our challenges that we will face as a small startup company include higher component cost, lower profit margin, and a lower total purchase volume. However, we believe that you, as our customer, would prefer to join the struggle against planned obsolescence by voting with your dollar. We also think that brand loyalty and reputation will provide a more sustainable business model.
Our largest obstacle to entering the electronic device market is where you come in. We need to order a high volume of components to provide a product of the best quality at a competitive price.
The Bibliatek project budget includes:
Cost of parts for 250 Bibliateks
An extruded aluminum case
Incorporation and other legal fees
Traveling expenses to manufacturing facilities
Short run line set up fee
Prototyping and testing
Programming for finalizing and polishing of the software
Advertising
Customized and printed boxes, with foam inserts, labels, and bags
Shipping expenses, including bubble wrap and labeling
5% Kickstarter Fee
3% plus $0.20 per pledge payment fee

Another challenge that we face is speeding up the load time of individual pages. We have already made huge leaps in speeding it up by using a partial refresh firmware modification, but there is a minor amount of work left to do yet. The programming budget includes compensation for this effort as well as outside assistance.
