Don't you want to?!
Our 2014 season and continued existence are in serious jeopardy.
We need you, our BGB community, to be a part of the courage, glamour, and liberation that comes from creating paradigm shifting art.
We are Brown Girls Burlesque
a company of women of color dedicated to creating our own reflection in the art form of burlesque. Founded in 2007, over the years we created more than 50 shows, performed around the country, visited colleges and shared the stage with The Legendary Roots Crew, Melvin Van Peebles, and The Burnt Sugar Arkestra.
We believe our work is inherently tied to community through our individual stories. Each day it is becoming more challenging to be independent, self-produced artists in New York City. Rather than having our cultures, stories, and bodies commodified by others we are striving to shine the spotlight on our own truths and fishnet together a world of women’s experiences.
As sensational as we are, we are not being dramatic -- we are at the breaking point and need your CRUCIAL support in order to bring you our next season and spread the love around the country and the world!
We feel the LOVE! But now we need to feel the Benjamins! Not only do we consistently perform to full houses in New York but our sold-out shows in Washington D.C., Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Minneapolis tell us there’s folks around the country ready and waiting to be vamped by the magic of BGB.
What your support will do:
Sizzling Season for 2014: Our sexy, insightful and exciting shows have far reaching and challenging artistic goals. The costs and labor that go into creating our productions include:
- A PRODUCER!!! - We Need Someone to Manage All Aspects of Production for us so we can bring the SHINE!!! And they need a team!
- Production expenses - Paying for venues, rehearsal studios, production insurance
- Making it Dazzling - Costumes, props, and materials are costly and time intensive
- Paying folks - Salaries and honorariums for guest artists
- Physical marketing - Designing, printing and distributing flyers and posters
- Reaching the world - Promoting on social media and updating our website
- Getting press - Generating and distributing information to media outlets and cultivating relationships
- Travel expenses - Planes, trains, buses, and automobiles
- Growing the Broad Squad - teaching classes and workshops
Spreading the Shake: To Grow the Broad Squad we want to teach more classes and workshops in New York and in every city we visit! To do this we need to advertise them and rent studios space so that we get ladies everywhere shaking it down, working it out and telling their stories!
Building our team and infrastructure: For our long term sustainability we need a freelance super skilled producer so we can focus on bringing you increasingly amazing performances. We also need assistants and interns, to whom we’d like to provide an honorarium, who will help with college bookings, grant writing, fundraising, and negotiations. This will start us on the path to finding a permanent space to operate out of for meetings, rehearsals and costume creation and storage.
Bring the Goods Home Merchandise! we want folks wearing the BGB sexy after the show! Our audiences need t-shirts, pasties, and more of the hand crafted art that makes burlesque so glamorous!
We are humbled by the power of sexuality, storytelling and the beautiful BGB community. We would truly not exist without you. Please help us continue to create shows, classes and reach people, one tassel at a time! Please take a look at our rewards and help us spread the word.
We Heart You,
--The BGB Lovelies

The Broad Squad Institute
our teaching wing, has graduated eight cycles of ladies through our Peeling Into Burlesque workshop who found both sparkles and sisterhood through this creative journey. In 2014 we want to blossom this into a deeper exploration of self-expression, image healing and performance. Visit The Broad Squad Institute Page
Our participation in the greater burlesque community
We even get a little shine from the Press:
Time Out New York, Metro New York, Bust Magazine, The Advocate, and Trace have all features stories on us and/or spread the word about our shows.
Ebony called BGB the, “daughters-in-dance” of Josephine Baker when they published our Creative Producer Chicava HoneyChild’s innovative research on the history of women of color in burlesque.

Risks and challenges
Some of the challenges we face are the many moving parts. We have the concepts for the upcoming year, but not the funds to make it all happen. We don't yet have venues secured for the coming year's season, in order to do so we need money to make down payments for venues etc. We also have not yet booked other cities to perform in. We have not secured guest artists to perform in our shows. We have not secured universities to perform and teach in. Basically our whole upcoming 2014 season is up in the air and in the hands of our beautiful community to support us with funding. We promise to continue providing you all with all we have: the hardwork, sweat, and glitter, that we've given to you over these last 6 years. And will be keeping you in the loop through this journey.
Thank you to our family and friends, audiences near and far, your support has kept us going and will the driving factor that will continue to do so.
THANK YOU ALL, from our fullest hearts.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
