"Through food, we learn that there are other people in the world." Maya Angelou
The world of food is full of amazing stories, discovery and fun. Come along as we follow an ingredient as it takes us around the world, tells a tale and inspires our culinary imaginations....
Betty Spaghetti’s Flying Food Adventure Show is an imaginative and entertaining children's television series featuring incredible edibles. Each episode combines live action and animation, spotlighting a "Blue Plate Special" food ingredient as its theme. Our hosts Betty and her Uncle Eddie Spaghetti go on exciting, ingredient-inspired flying food adventures. Combining live action with the creative imagination of artist Laurie Pincus, and flavored with a whimsical sense of humor and lots of original music, Betty Spaghetti's Flying Food Adventure Show will entertain and inspire children and their families to discover a lifelong love of healthy eating. Our team includes Twila Liggett, creator and executive producer of PBS’s award winning series, Reading Rainbow, Laurie Pincus, internationally recognized multi-media artist, and Eric Haessler, an actor and teacher with over 30 years of experience working with children.
Today there is a recognized crisis regarding children and their health. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Children are bombarded daily with ads for prepackaged foods, sugar soda, fast food and candy, known to be contributing factors to the rise of obesity and type II diabetes in children under the age of twelve. Given this unhealthy trend, it appears that corporations and foundations are beginning to recognize the need to address this issue.
We believe quality television can make a difference. As veteran educators and television producers, we believe that children learn best when they are excited and entertained, not preached to about what is good for them. By involving kids in the fun of discovering unprocessed foods, we are teaching without preaching, paving the way for a lifetime of healthy eating. By learning about new food choices, children can contribute in a meaningful way to the improved health of their entire family. The time is now! Betty Spaghetti's Flying Food Adventure Show will impact children's health issues the way Reading Rainbow impacted children's literacy.
The Recipe for the show:
Take two hosts, animated Betty Spaghetti and her live-action Uncle Eddie Spaghetti.
Mix in Wanda, the Blue Plate Special GPS for our food adventure navigation. Add the Flying Food Adventure Truck and today's special food ingredient, and away we go, off on a food adventure. Visit the Food History Hall of Fame with food reporters John Stilton Cheese, Carmen Banana and Pico de Gallo and learn fun facts about today's ingredient.
We will stop by Pete's Place, a juice bar for the good bugs in the garden, and hear the latest garden news. We visit the truck's roof top garden with Ali Fresco, our garden expert, and learn how today's ingredient grows.
Inside the truck is Kitchen Island, where we cook today's ingredient. We will stir it all up with Kids-in-the-Kitchen locally and around the world. And for a whole lot of tasty fun, we can sprinkle in shows on EATV: Let's Make A Meal, The Okra Winfrey Show, Meal of Fortune and The Spice is Right. Meet Snacky Chan, Rachel Ravioli and Jamie Olive, exercise with Richard Persimmon and sit back with the Couch Potatoes to enjoy performing acts "Live Tonight from the Ice Box Theater," accompanied by "The Pots and Pans Orchestra." Watch for 30 minutes with your family and enjoy.
Why We Need A Sizzle Reel:
Today’s climate for funding a children’s television series is very different from the era during which Twila created and secured funding for Reading Rainbow. A strong concept and proposal helped secure a pilot and subsequently series funding. In today’s market, a “sizzle reel” is a key element (along with a written proposal) that will help “sell” this concept to corporate and foundation sponsors. Because Betty Spaghetti’s Flying Food Adventure Show is unique in its combination of art, animation and live action, this sizzle reel will help potential funders envision the essence and excitement of the series. To this end, we have partnered with Flickerlab in NYC, who specialize in unique animation styles, and are creating this reel. The finished sizzle reel will also function as the opening titles for the actual show, once we are in production on the series. One of the things that makes the look of our show unique, is that while many of the “entertainment show” segments will be in standard 2-D animation style, some of the main characters will be Laurie's animated small and life-size 3-D painted plywood figures. There are three phases of work to create our reel, including the finished music. Having completed two thirds of the process, we are looking for your help to underwrite the last third of the project.
Here is the animatic storyboard and music (in progress) for our sizzle reel:

Risks and challenges
After our sizzle reel is successfully funded, our plan is to show it to Corporate Sponsors, many of whom funded Reading Rainbow in the past. We are hoping to find sponsors and apply for grants that will fully fund our first 26 episodes, before we take it to a broadcast venue. This will help us fully achieve our vision and retain creative control vs selling the idea/concept to a network and risk losing control over the final product. There is no way of knowing when and if this second stage of funding can be obtained and without the finished sizzle reel our chances will be much harder but not totally impossible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
