We're on a mission to help people reduce their dependence on single use plastics, one lunch at a time
PACKD Lunch is a sustainably made lunch box, designed especially for takeaway food.
We believe in the power of design to change habits and attitudes. So we've created a super dooper lunchbox that makes it easy and fun to grab a takeaway, without throwing away!
Do you often grab lunch to go?
We've estimated that in UK alone, we eat 5M takeaway lunches each day - creating enough single use packaging to fill Hyde Park every day.
Using a reusable lunchbox can prevent you from contributing up to 250 pieces of single use plastic from entering our waterways and oceans each year.
How is PACKD Lunch different?
The lunch boxes currently available on the market aren't designed with ‘takeaway’ in mind, so we've done our research and made features that make it easy for cafe chefs to handle, and hungry lunchers to eat from.
Where did the idea for PACKD Lunch come from?
Blue Planet II left a hole in our hearts and an impetus for action! We, (Laura & Bettina) both started to notice the oodles of food packaging piling up after lunchtime at our offices. While many of our colleagues have reusable drink bottles and coffee cups - we thought there should surely be a convenient zero-waste solution for eating lunch on-the-go! Thats when PACKD Lunch was born
WHY: We need to change our habits to protect our oceans
We're astounded and upset at the state of our world’s oceans. One garbage truck of single-use plastic enters our oceans and waterways each minute. From sea birds who have eaten more than 260 pieces of plastic, to whales washing up with 40KG of plastic bags in their bellies.
Not only are sea life harmed by single use plastics - but it affects our health too with micro-plastics ending up on our plate via the fish we eat.
Unless we consume more thoughtfully, our world is heading towards an environmental crisis that we're unable to reverse.
How does PACKD Lunch work?
How do we know it will be successful?
We recently conducted a pilot with Exmouth Market (London) and 75 employees from 10 local businesses.
- 96% said they would use a BYO lunch box in the future
- 90% would tell a friend about PACKD Lunch
- "PACKD Lunch is such a great initiative and just what the world needs" (Consumer Trial Participant)
- "This is important for all takeaway food businesses" (food vendor)
A little more about us!
We are are two globe trotting Kiwis. Bettina Garnier (MBA) is an Innovation Strategist. She lives in London (UK) and works with global companies on marketing and brand challenges. Laura Burley (BArch MSc) is an architect and designer living in Copenhagen (Denmark) who’s passionate about improving sustainability through design.
We both grew up near the beach and the sea is an important part of our lives. We’re really dismayed at our ocean plastics problem and we’re doing this project to help ensure that the oceans remain a wonderful place for sea life to live happily and for future generations to explore and enjoy with respect.
Where are we on our project roadmap?
We're currently finalising our lunchbox design through testing and prototyping, and working closely with manufacturers to get it ready for production. We're aiming to have these available for sale in November.
Once we have our first lunch boxes they will initially be available for purchase at your favourite cafes and street food markets - to remind everyone to make the right packaging choice when they're grabbing lunch on the go.
What is it made from?
We've selected materials that are both durable and functional as well as have limited impact on the earth. The lid is made from shatter-proof borosilicate glass (Like Pyrex) and the bowl is made from recycled drink bottles collected in Japan! For a little lunchtime fine-dining, we've opted for lovely metal cutlery.
How will we use the money raised?
Our initial largest expenses are the tooling and manufacturing of our first batch of lunch boxes. Your support will help us begin production and get our first batch of PACKD lunch boxes to market!
There’s a lot that goes into this - from tooling, to packaging and shipping!
If we go over our project target, your funds will help us hire a sales employee to help spread the word about our lunch boxes and mission.
Please support us and get behind PACKD Lunch. Now is the time for us all to change our everyday habits in order to improve and preserve our planet!
Thank you from us and all fishes in the sea
Risks and challenges
We're pretty planned and thorough people but you never know when things go wrong. We aim to get the lunch boxes to you in November but if we have a hiccup with the manufacturing, you might receive it a little later. but don't worry - we'll keep you posted on progressLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
