A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Harmful Effects Of Stress
How does stress affect you? 1 in 3 people suffer from bruxism disorder which causes them to clench their teeth during the stress of their day and grind their teeth at night.
The problem is only 10% of bruxism sufferers are ever diagnosed by their dentist and it's after damage has occurred and they've ruined their beautiful smile. Why?
Because you don't know you are doing it, it happens unconsciously. Untreated, bruxism causes all kinds of expensive dental bills and pain.
Unfortunately, the dentist only has a couple options... prescribe a dental splint / mouth guard that costs anywhere from $400 to $800 OR the dentist must perform cost surgeries such as replacing damaged teeth, overlays and crowns... costing $1000's...
Even then the bruxism behavior continues and jaw pain, neck pain, frequent headaches, migraines and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder can occur, not too mention you will most likely be back in the dentist's office again for more treatments / surgeries because your bruxism never stopped.
Until now, bruxism sufferers had no easy way to detect bruxism early, detect it before damage occurs... Until now, bruxism sufferers had no affordable way to treat and eliminate their stress and bruxism disorder. With BruxRelief, NOW YOU do!
What is Bruxism? How does Stress play a part?
BruxRelief Detection & Biofeedback Therapy
What if you found a solution? One wearable smart device that could detect if you have bruxism early and you can use the same device to treat and eliminate stress and bruxism disorder using biofeedback therapy.
Easy to Use
One Connected Wearable Device
What is Biofeedback Therapy?
Biofeedback Therapy has been clinically tested for more than 25 years to end damaging and debilitating behaviors like Bruxism. Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that biofeedback therapy can successful aid an adult to retrain their brain and stop an unwanted behavior.
In the last few years especially, specific studies have been conducted with patients suffering from Bruxism and biofeedback therapy and once again proved to be the solution these patients were looking for to end their bruxism.
Now we've made this therapy available for all. BruxRelief is affordable, incredibly convenient, and provides comprehensive therapy by helping you to reduce your stress levels during the day and stop unwanted / harmful behaviours of clenching and grinding during your sleep.
Up until now, dentist and bruxism sufferers have had no reliable way to detect bruxism disorder and treat it before damage occurs. Using biofeedback therapy dentist and bruxism sufferers can retrain their brain to destress and stop teeth clenching and teeth grinding behavior.
BruxRelief allows users to destress their life during the day and stop their teeth grinding and clenching while they sleep all in one device at an affordable price.
Biofeedback is like a superpower, it's like Spider-Man's 'Spidersense'. It allows your subconscious to be more aware so you can sense an unwanted behavior and change it.
Biofeedback therapy is a technique that provides individuals with information about their bodily functions with the intention of promoting changes in behavior that result in improved health. Electronically detected physiological measurements are coupled with a feed-back signal that is initiated when pre-specified conditions are met.
The BruxRelief device aims to generate a learned response that persists even after the therapy is discontinued as proven with other Biofeedback clinical and therapy results.
Insight Into The Grind
Developed with user friendly visuals and settings, the BruxRelief app helps you record your stress, clenching and teeth grinding occurrences, track progress, and customize settings such as vibration and audio signals. The app combines with BruxRelief to bring to the user a fully customizable therapy solution to address your stress, clenching and teeth grinding.
How It Works
The BruxRelief will attach behind your ear using a medical grade reusable adhesive gel. The device uses our patent pending sensor technology to measure muscle activity when you are clenching or grinding your teeth. Once the device senses clenching or grinding during stressful events or sleep, the device will emit a signal to your subconscious to stop the behavior without disturbing your workday or your sleep.
The device will also communicate via bluetooth with your smartphone and the free BruxRelief app. You can use the app to customize your therapy and track your progress. There is also and online web portal you can use to share your therapy and progress with your dentist.

Prototyping & Testing
We've spent the last year testing out various prototypes and sensor configurations that have allowed us to come up with some huge breakthroughs in sensor technology. Several of our innovations are now patent pending as a result of our extensive testing. It was hard work but this trial and error process allowed us to come of with a stress & bruxism detection and biofeedback device that is more accurate, smaller and will cost a small fraction of our competition.
My Story Behind BruxRelief
When I was going up, my favorite comic book was Spider-Man, but my real superhero was my dad. Just like Spider-Man, my dad wasn't perfect, but he was strong and he was brave.
After turning 35, my life went through a huge transition and something came to me, within me, that called upon me to change things up in my life. To go after my dreams and not let fear hold me back.
It's funny how life works sometimes, but everything happens for a reason. Over a year ago I moved to Bali, Indonesia to challenge myself, live aboard for at least one year and be brave...
Within one month after moving to Bali, life forced me to fulfill that decision to be brave. Within a month after moving to Bali, I got in a motorcycle accident, broke bones in my face, stitches and had a severe concussion. A month after that I caught dengue fever, which if you've ever had it, it feels like every bit of death. Then a month after that, I re-injured my lower back and spent two months in bed on pain-killers and eventually had to get back surgery in Thailand where I spent two months recovering.
That point was my lowest, I wanted to go back home so bad, I wanted to be with family. I was scared for the first time in my life as it felt like I had this dark cloud over me.
When I moved back to Bali after recovering, my anxiety and feelings got worse. I was afraid to go to sleep, I was afraid to wake up, I was afraid each day was going to be my last, worried about the next accident that might happen. It was at this point, when my anxiety was really bad that I started clenching my teeth constantly during the day, it felt like I was constantly preparing for a fight. I started waking up with a sore jaw from grinding my teeth at night.
I needed someone, I wanted my dad, my family, I wanted something to stop me, tell me to take a breath, calm down, be brave.
In college I studied psychology, engineering and programming. One morning waking up in fear and pain I remember a lesson about biofeedback therapy. Biofeedback is like a superpower, it's like Spider-Man's 'spidersense' it makes your subconscious more aware so that you can sense an unwanted behavior and change it.
I looked for an engineer in Bali to help me build it but ultimately I got frustrated and decided to build it myself. So I did some research, found the parts I needed and I flew to Singapore where I went to a robotics shop and started building my biofeedback device on my bathroom floor. Back then the device wasn't much and required a lot of calibration but I started testing it right away and within about 3 weeks my bruxism went away. The pain and stress from clenching went away as I had the device remind me stop, breath and relax my jaw muscles. At night the device helped me to stop grinding my teeth as well, sending messages to my subconscious that would stop me from grinding and allow me to get a deep restful sleep.
It was after relieving my own stress and bruxism that I realized I had something and I decided launch my startup BruxRelief to help the millions and millions of people that suffer from stress and bruxism disorder.
Since then I've traveled to Moldova to participate in the Rockstart Launchtrack program to step through validating this as a business opportunity and working with engineers, a dentist, programmers, my CTO back in Bali, and a 3D printing labs. We've tested numerous prototypes and made some awesome discoveries that are now patent pending.
It's been a wild ride getting BruxRelief to this point, an incredible adventure. But like I said in the beginning, everything in life happens for a reason and now with you and the Kickstarter community we'll finally be able to bring this wonderful solution to those suffering from stress and bruxism disorder.
Risks and challenges
We’ve worked extensively with suppliers, programmers, and engineering to bring to you BruxRelief, iterating through numerous prototypes and manufacturing techniques.
But even with lots of early feedback and great manufacturing processes and design, the hardware piece is not easy. We want to be clear about the major remaining risks to shipping on time: our end item design and creating production tooling.
Most electronic products are encased in hard plastic shells to protect their components. The BruxRelief using hard plastics and soft adhesive gel and is packed with sophisticated electronics, but has the added design challenge of being robust enough however comfortable to wear both on your jaw and temple. We’ve come up with some innovative techniques to ensure manufacturability of a product as unique as the BruxRelief, but it’s possible that we will still need to tweak our processes on the factory floor.
We are mitigating this risk to the schedule proactively by engineering reliability testing at multiple points to catch errors quickly.
All our prototypes were initially made with open source hardware and electronic components including controller board, patent pending muscle sensors, and associated wiring. The end item mold will still need to be procured. To make devices at larger quantities, we are designing a production steel mold or “tool” with the help our manufacturing partner. It’s possible that this process may require one or multiple re-designs of our tool. Delays with the factory can add days to the timeline. Days can become weeks.
To mitigate this risk, our technical team will be on-site at the factory during critical periods. Additionally, we have built an extra buffer into our production schedule to account for most reasonable setbacks.
We feel confident you'll receive your BruxRelief on time and we'll continue to be transparent and timely in our communication and manufacturing.
It is also important to mention that BruxRelief is not a medical device, and it's currently not designed to diagnose or treat any medical conditions.
