About this project
The Digital City Series began in 2008 while I was living in Amsterdam and attending the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy. After 4 years of work and travel, the series now includes 22 cities from Europe, North America, and Asia.
Two versions of the book have been designed and prototyped.
- The larger book is a 12" x 12" hardcover with 115 pages and a full cover dust jacket.
- The smaller book is a 7" x 7" perfect bound softcover with 98 pages.
With 22 large-format prints at 4' x 4' - there is enough work to fill some spaces in this world and put on a good show. It is a long term goal of mine to eventually sell large high quality prints, which is going to take some time and a bit of luck.
That is why I am making the book - as a way for me to offer my art at a reasonable price and fund future exhibitions.
The Digital City Series is a photographic project of digitally constructed city portraits from around the globe. These portraits are created by splicing together diverse scenes from each city to form a singular square composition. The images are composed in a seamless fashion that invite the viewer to enter the picture and experience different parts of the city as one.
For this project I am joining forces with the Book & Job Gallery in San Francisco, California. Book & Job is established in the Tenderloin District of the city and promotes the work of emerging artists based in the Bay Area.
- We are have an exhibition on October 6th, 2012.
- 11 full sized cities.
I first travelled to China in 2008 after I heard about the Da Fen Oil Painting VIllage in the southern city of Shenzhen. The village has existed since the late 90's and is said to be responsible for 60% of copied artwork worldwide. I commissioned three oil paintings of the Digital City Series while I was there.
In 2010 I returned to the village and I meet the artist Da Huzi. We collaborated on making an oil painting of the Venice composition and he also made it into the Shenzhen composition holding the painting. He has been working in Da Fen for some time and balances doing commercial painting alongside his own original artwork. I am a big fan of his original work and I am excited to say that we are going to have a joint exhibition together in Shenzhen - November 2012.
I will use the kickstarter funding to produce a short run of both sized books while I am in China. I have already produced prototypes for the books and will be bringing them with me as reference for the printer. I already have contacts there and am in contact with some printers, it will just take a bit of groundwork to find the right one.
On this trip I will only be producing a short run of the books, but afterwards, I will have everything set up to produce quality books for a competitive price and help me take this project on the road with a traveling exhibition.
Plus, I will be updating this project throughout the travels and by supporting you will get an inside look at what a man with a dream, quality prototypes, a production budget and ticket to China can do in this day and age.
The spirit of adventure has been a driving force through out this project.
I've meet great people and have had some memorable experiences - like ended up in a rap video skating around the streets of Lisbon, Portugal or being confronted by a pack of wild dogs underneath the Bosporus Bridge in Istanbul, Turkey.
I've also presented the work in Pecha Kucha events in Amsterdam, Hamburg, Shenzhen, and San Francisco by freestyle rapping to a slide show of the work.
It has taken a lot of energy and effort took get this project off the ground over the last 4 years. I feel that I am near the tipping point and with your help for this kickstarter project, I will be able to get the piece of the puzzle that I need to keep this project going.
Thanks to all the people that have help this project along the way.
