What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

Imagine being able to swap your pickups without tools.  How about moving them where you want them without major surgery to your guitar?  Better yet, imagine doing this not in days, not hours, not even minutes, but IN SECONDS.  Our guitars will do all of this - AND MORE...

The AxeM and the R103

Hello, I'm Sean Berg, the owner of Bergstok Music, and we are a manufacturer of musical instruments and accessories near Rice Lake, Wisconsin.  I am looking to fund production of two of our guitars, the AxeM & the R103:

Both guitars share the same platform, the difference being the body style.  I have proven all of my design goals with several AxeM prototypes, and these concepts will lend themselves nicely to the R103 which is designed but not yet manufactured.

AxeM and R103 Features

  • Free Form Modular Pickup System (patent pending) which allows placement of pickups anywhere on a pickup plate and easy change-out of pickups. The pickup plate also doubles as an electronics shielding plate.
  • Full Reversibility. This includes the following features:  Reversible bridge (patent pending) which maintains intonation for left or right handed playing - it is also height adjustable.  Reversible nut (patent pending), which is also height adjustable.  Volume and tone control that can be unplugged from one side of the guitar and plugged into the other side.  Two sets of strap pins for left or right handed playing - the bottom pins also double as feet when the guitar is standing up.
  • Magnetically Latched Spring Assisted Built-In Guitar Stand (patent pending) which allows the guitar to stand up without use of a stand. There is a steel plate which is used to magnetically latch the stand which also doubles as an electronics cover and shielding plate.
  • Trigger Pickup Switch in the body voids near the volume control that stays out of the way but is easy to access.
  • Recessed Output Jack on the top of the body that is easy to get to but stays out of the way, and the cord can stay plugged in when the guitar is stood up by keeping the plug out of the way.
  • Three Layer Unique Body Designs with different shapes for each layer that evoke a 3D carving. The top and bottom layers are 3/4" ash (alder may be a future option), and the middle layer is maple. The maple layer contacts the bolt-on neck for improved sound characteristics. The wings of the body feature voids that are part of the visual design but can function as handles.
  • A Unique Clover Headstock Design

Kickstarter Funding Goals

I firmly believe that Bergstok Music has something new to contribute to the world of guitars both now and in the future, and that a successful Kickstarter campaign will prove the viability of my designs in the marketplace.

Our goal to fund production of these two guitars includes both essential and non-essential primary funding criteria.  Essential criteria includes the following:

  • Acquisition of materials and services vital to producing the guitars (production processes are already in place)
  • Sourcing & testing of parts for the pluggable volume & tone controls
  • Sourcing of a new spring and / or spring manufacturer for the kickstand spring
  • Sourcing of a vendor or manufacturer to replace current pickup module frames with a fully shielded box

Now, depending on our ultimate level of funding, non-essential primary funding criteria includes the following:

  • Find a manufacturer for the reversible bridge and nut that can produce them in larger quantities and at lower cost
  • Testing of alternative headstock logo processes (the current logo is an ink suspended decal)
  • Investigate usage of model logos for both guitars
  • Website redesign and marketing to increase the visibility of these guitars.
  • Find better conductive strips and insulators for the Modular Pickup System

Finally, again depending on our funding outcome, is a wish list as follows:

  • Acquire a CNC machine to build our necks & possibly the bodies - currently our necks are purchased from Warmoth, and we cut the headstocks, apply the logo decal, and add finish
  • A trip to NAMM to show our products
  • Pursue patents for our patent-pending features.
  • Find new production facility.

Risks and challenges

The risks & challenges for this project are mainly in sourcing some of the materials and services needed for improvements to the guitars, which ultimately translates into time and resources spent. These risks are not to be taken lightly. Worst case scenario this would affect the delivery time for rewards. However, my greatest asset (besides my dedication to the success of this project) is my family and friends. I come from a large and supportive family (four brothers and four sisters and a wonderful mother, all of whom are very talented and hard working), and I have a large and supportive family (a wonderful and brilliant wife, four daughters and a son, and awesome in-laws), and many friends who have helped out with my dream. All of these people will not hesitate to jump in and help if I need it, and they stand ready to do so. In fact were it not for my family & friends and the innumerable help they have given me along the way, this project would still be a pipe dream. Most importantly, they are all excited for the success of this project, as much as I am. Sean
