Frequently Asked Questions
What would the rating be on these episodes?
Though there will not be any sort of actual rating given to the episodes, if I would put the content at about a PG-13 rating and that is 100% based on the fact that their will be guns and mild gore. I don't plan on any foul language or over-the-top violence so this can have a much broader audience!
Is it a comedy or what?
There will be some light comedy throughout, but overall it will be more of a drama. I have cited Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog as a huge inspiration, but it is really the format I hope to emulate. I am hoping to make a really good, really emotional story.
Hello! My name is Ben Winterman and I am a videographer and songwriter/musician from Nashville, TN. I have been working on this idea for a zombie musical video series for over 5 years. I wrote the music for the first song and then developed the idea for the story, but I have not had the resources or the funding to make it come to life in the way that I imagined. I have toyed with the idea of doing a Kickstarter, and I am happy to finally be putting it into motion!
Hungry Hearts Musical is going to be a 5 episode, live action, zombie based musical video series. If the project is funded, there will be a comic book prequel that can establish story and characters, and lead us right up to the first episode and first song. After the time to back the project has ended, you will still be able to pre-order all elements from the project including the comic book, t-shirts, soundtrack, etc. through the website http://hungryheartsmusical.com!
Zombie stories are incredibly common these days and one of the biggest things holding me back from pursuing this project has been worry that the market is just oversaturated with zombie stuff. However, I think that this is a really unique and cool take on the zombie genre, and I have not seen anything quite like what I am trying to achieve here. The premise is pretty simple: there are zombies who are undead that want to eat people, and they still have their thoughts.
The story will begin in the comic book and lead up to the opening shot of the first episode. The first episode starts with our main human characters, Chris Murphy and Emily Gray holed up with a handful of other survivors while zombies are beating at the door. The scene will begin with them singing about their situation and filling the viewers in on their states of mind.
Scene two of the opening song in the first episode will be our main zombie protagonist, Ryan Shepard, walking down the street. This is where my story has its twist. Ryan still has his full thoughts, but he can't control being a zombie. So when we, as the viewer, hear our zombies singing, it is simply their thoughts that they can't communicate since all they do is groan.
As for the plot, there will be build up of the plot in the comic book prequel, but it basically comes down to this: Chris and Emily, our lead human characters, are in a relationship together and they were before the apocalypse. Ryan was Chris' best friend and had very strong feelings for Emily. At some point, Ryan sacrificed himself to save Chris and Emily because he was secretly in love with her. So now he finds himself a flesh-eating zombie, with no girl, no friend, and only his thoughts to keep him company.
The Comic Book
Once the project is funded, the comic book work will begin immediately. It will release in a digital format and a physical format for backers who choose that reward level. I am unsure of the length of the comic book at this time, as it will depend on the final total of the funding. The comic book will be written by me, Ben, and a long time friend of mine, Bryan Bretz. All of the comic book drawing in the video and on the website are his work, created as proof-of-concept for this project. He also helped Revival Games develop an RPG board game called Zombie High that had some amazing zombie artwork. Here is an example:
I have written a number of songs to be a part of this musical and I am really proud of them! The music will be an integral part of the series. My inspiration to do a musical in this episodic form was from Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog. I thought that Dr. Horrible was a perfect format to tell a great story, delivered gradually through episodes, with amazing music to convey the emotion and to keep the story moving. Unlike Dr. Horrible, this will be more of a dramatic story, with some light humor.
Backers will have the chance to receive digital and physical versions of the soundtrack, and the songs will eventually be available on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, etc.
The initial plan is to do 5 episodes, featuring 1 song per episode. There may be stretch goals to do more episodes and to have more songs, but that will be determined later. Backers will get the opportunity to view the episodes before anyone else. I plan on releasing them weekly for 5 weeks, and backers will get to see them at least a day before everyone else! If stretch goals are eventually set and reached, there may also be physical Blu-Ray versions of the series. These will be live-action, fully produced episodes with makeup, multiple cameras, and really high production quality. I WILL NOT be pleased until these episodes are something truly great and worth watching!
When I first started planning this Kickstarter over 3 years ago, I really struggled with settling on a dollar amount to set. I really want this to be a top quality production, with well produced music, professional film quality, and great rewards. Initially, the dollar amount was going to be much more, but in the 3 years since I started planning, I have acquired more equipment for video production, and learned a lot of tricks to keep costs as low as possible.
100% of the money raised will go toward the following:
- Professional studio production of the soundtrack and original songs
- Camera and sound equipment rental and purchase (when it's more cost effective)
- Food/Pay for cast and crew
- Fulfillment of all physical media and rewards
If, throughout the course of production, the cost goes above what was funded, I will find other ways to get the job done well.
Putting together the reward info was a lot harder than I thought it would be! I wanted there to be a lot of different options, and I wanted the rewards to be worthwhile, while still raising the money needed for production.
A list of the rewards is available on the right, and some of the reward tiers may change (for the better) if stretch goals are achieved. The awards boil down to a handful of items and the really high level tiers will have roles in the musical and trips to Nashville.
Since I haven't been able to produce everything yet, I don't have any examples of the stuff that will be delivered, but I do promise to get high quality CDs, posters, and comic books to fulfill the majority of the rewards!
Well, obviously backing the project is the number one way to help. But social media is another great way that you can help the project! Sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. is incredibly appreciated. You can find our Social Media links below. FOLLOW US!
Stretch goals will be set if it looks like the funding will be successful. Goals will include adding songs, adding episodes, making the comic book color, and more!
Risks and challenges
This is the very first Kickstarter Campaign I have been involved with. I am incredibly nervous that I will not raise enough funds to cover the costs of production. If aspects of the production exceed the money raised, I will cover any overages myself (somehow). I may scale back on just how "big" I would like it to be, but I will put quality of final product above all else. There is a HUGE risk of this being cheesy. I will not be satisfied if it is cheesy or campy.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
