To clarify, all of the £55 for the £55 pledge level will go directly to Godot. In addition, any pledge amounts that are exactly £55 over the chosen pledge level will also go to Godot.
Everything else is being used to fund the production and support of this awesome course, which will help grow the Godot community by making it accessible it to a whole new audience :)
NEW 14 Jun - Godot Mastermind Group Pledge
This tier is for those who are serious about creating with Godot. Yann will organise monthly online meetings of up to 90 minutes. An experienced Godot programmer will be present, and you will all get un-stuck and set your goals for the next month.
There will be 10 of these monthly meetings between August 2018 and June 2019. You will be amongst a group of peers who are also serious about using Godot, and customising it to their needs, and will have the support of the Godot community and the course creators.
By meeting with like-minded people on a regular basis, setting goals, and working together to solve your problems you'll create a true "mastermind" group and benefit from the strength of great minds combined.
28th May - Character Customisation Included
Our 2nd most popular idea for a stretch-goal, character customisation, is now included in the base Kickstarter scope. This means we'll be teaching you how to customise a 2D xor 3D character on a menu screen, then have these customisations translate into the game.
We want to create a full course to teach a novice (or indeed an experienced coder) how to create cross-platform games using Godot Engine 3, a powerful and open-source game engine.
Godot is highly intuitive, totally free to use, and open-source so you can modify it to your needs. Some exciting and visually impressive titles are in development, and we'd like your dream game to be among them.
Games make a great way to learn to code. We have already taught 100,000s of students to code in our Udemy courses, which are some of the most popular on the web. Our courses are entirely project based, making them insanely practical. Once the Kickstarter is funded, you'll get access to the course on Udemy.com as we continue to develop it.
Projects?! What will I make in this course?
You will start by building a simple and fun word game called Loony Lips.
Move on to Hoppy Days - a classic 2D platform game oozing with personality.
The third project is Heist Meisters - a top-down stealth game!
We will then create increasingly complex 2D and 3D games together in the later content.
The full price of the course will be US$197 when finished. Here's your chance to get the course at a massive discount. Furthermore you'll be part of the community who help steer the direction of the project! Finally, if we end-up splitting the content into multiple courses, you will get all of them as part of your pledge!
Who Are We?
We are a team of qualified and experienced software developers, teachers and artists. We are able to explain complex concepts clearly, as well as entertain along the way.
Yann is a professional educator, a college professor, a lifetime gamer and a self-taught coder. Ben is the founder of GameDev.tv, one of the top online instructors in the world, and a professional developer.
Why Godot Engine?
Why learn Godot when you could use Unreal, Unity or GameMaker? Only Godot can give you all of the following...
- Near infinitely nested prefabs
- Completely free of licence fees*
- A completely intuitive and beginner friendly experience.
* for smaller game developers Unreal's 5% of revenue can be a significant cost. Also Unity's per-seat licence fees can really add-up, and GameMaker has a cost to even get started.
Even if you already know other game engines, the experience you will gain with Godot and GDScript will deepen your knowledge, and give you great ideas you can transfer to other engines and projects. It's worth your time.
How is this course different to others?
The courses are project-based, so you will not just be learning dry programming concepts, but applying them immediately to real games as you go. You will be asked to apply your knowledge every few minutes in our challenges.
All the project files will be included, as well as references and resources. In addition to engaging "screen-casting" there will be talking-head videos, powerful diagrams, and reference material. 24 hours a day there will be other students on hand to help. Meet thousands of other students studying live, on our community site, and our Discord chat server.
You will get full lifetime access (including video downloads on iOS and Android) for a single one-off fee. Unlike other resources we'll be covering both 2D and 3D, GDScript and even converting the projects to C#.
This course is comprehensive, if you're a beginner we'll hold your hand from the very start. By the end you'll be setup to publish your game to XBox Playstation, Mac and PC! You'll even have an accompanying e-book of slides to cement your knowledge.
Who is this for...
If you want to create games: Godot is a fantastic platform which enables you to make production-quality games. Furthermore these games can be created for Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android and console from a single source!
This will be a full course, and will be over 20 hours long. If you're a complete beginner, we'll teach you all the coding and game design principles you'll need. If you're an artist, we'll teach you to bring your assets to life. If you're a coder, we'll teach you game design principles.
We'll take you through the programming concepts from scratch. If you've never done any coding before you'll be OK, just expect to work a little harder at the start. All basic coding concepts will be covered.
Already have our other course(s)?
Great, it will give you a fantastic head-start in this course. GDScript is based on Python, plus we'll be teaching C-Sharp for all projects too. Godot's editor can be configured to be very similar to Unity or Unreal.
If you're on the Blender course, great, you're ready to make your own assets and these can be used in Godot with ease.
Here's a few recent reviews for our other game dev courses...
Testimonial from Lars Kokemohr (Dean of engineering at the School for Games in Berlin) -
"Yesterday I had a very constructive talk with Ben Tristem, Yann Burrett and Samuel Pattuzzi, one of GameDev.tv's software engineers. As you probably all know by now they are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to add Godot to their arsenal of learning materials (called "Discovering Godot"). And if you have been around for some time you will probably also know that I try to contact tutorial authors and help them improve their materials, so I reviewed the first materials that Ben has put online and contacted him with my feedback.
Long story short: I had been a bit worried because the first materials showed a bit much of the Unity / C# mindset, but during our talk it became abundantly clear that these guys are very experienced and skilled teachers, that their understanding far exceeds "practical tips", and that they hold their own materials to high standards, so they were very open to my initial feedback and showed interest in regular reviews of their code.
The previous courses already teach you a lot about other engines and about programming in general, but once you start looking at the details you will find that Godot is much more unique than it seems on first sight.
Knowing the people behind the campaign a little bit better I am now certain that they will make good use of the open source nature of Godot and its awesome community and that the resulting course will leave you with a solid understanding of "the Godot way"."
Want to focus on game design? This bundle includes Yann's popular Board Game Developer course. Here you will learn the fundamentals of game design, without the digital distraction.
This bundle is focused around C#, and 2D and 3D game development. Both in the spirit of Godot, and the most relevant package of courses for the budding game developer / programmer.
Want to focus on brining your artwork to life? This bundle includes our wildly popular Blender, Blender Characters and The GIMP 2D artwork courses. All taught by the cuddly Michael Bridges.
Indie developers have to do most things for themselves. Learn to be a polymath by taking the 7 most relevant courses together, covering art, design and coding. Because you're worth it.
Why will it be different to other tutorials
Godot is still a young engine, and while there are some wonderful resources out there for people to learn, we feel we can add to them by making a complete course from beginner to expert. Here's the top three reasons our course will rock...
- We're professional teachers and developers.
- It will be project and challenge based.
- We're creating the content live based on your feedback.
The Greater Good
By supporting this project you'll also be doing something much more fundamental. With a free, open-source engine in our arsenal we'll be able to provide a download of the engine we know won't become unavailable in the future and tackle timeless problems like learning mathematics.
In future courses we'll have a medium for teaching skills such as maths, physics, statistics, and others that the world so badly needs require a huge amount of time to teach and have a clear historical learning journey. Historically we have avoided these because the engine we teach in ages them too fast. No longer once this wonderful project funds.
When will the course be ready?
With successful funding we should be able to release the first 5 hours of content as early as July 2018. We will then produce content at the rate of at least a new game every 8 weeks until complete.
