The Vapors is an offbeat dramedy about two college losers, Vincent and Magda.
The first Vapors chapter was published online in late 2015 on my website, saintcomix.com. The comic quickly gained a following and today has been read by over 50,000 people worldwide.
In late 2017, I Kickstarted the first physical print run of the Vapors, in a comic featuring the first Vapors chapter as well as three print-exclusive new minichapters, or "Vaporettes". The campaign was a huge success, hitting nearly quadruple its initial funding goal.
So I'm back, baby!
The second Vapors comic will include the second chapter of The Vapors, as well as a number of completely new Vaporettes. I have written a number of Vaporette scripts, and guest artists are standing by to bring them to life on the page if the stretch goals are reached.
The first Kickstarter gave me better insight into what it costs to do a project like this. Turns out, it's more than I thought the first time around (how shocking). So the goal is set a bit higher this time around to reflect what it actually cost the first time.
What do you get for backing this project?
There's a lot of reward tier options this time because of all the different combinations of both books, both pins, and personalized copies available. With this campaign, you can truly HAVE IT YOUR WAY, and LIVE MAS at the same time.
Signed copies aren't just signed, I'll customize the inside cover with any message you'd like me to write plus any personalized drawing you'd like me to put there!
If your reward tier includes a signed copy and more than one book, I'll sign Book 2 by default but I'll sign whichever book you'd prefer, just let me know your preference.
A $5 pledge will get your name in the Special Thanks page in the book (this comes with any higher pledges too!)
A $15 pledge gets you a freshly-printed copy of The Vapors 2.
A $25 pledge gets you a copy of Vapors 2 PLUS a hard enamel metallic Infinite Jest pin,
OR a copy of Vapors 2, PLUS a copy of Vapors 1.
The pins are approximately one inch across and pressed by the Enamel Pin Factory, a custom manufacturer based in the UK.
A $35 pledge gets you one copy of Vapors 2, one copy of Vapors 1, AND a hard enamel Infinite Jest pin,
OR a copy of Vapors 2, plus a hard enamel Infinite Jest pin AND a hard enamel Poobah pin.
A $45 pledge gets you one copy of Vapors 2, one copy of Vapors 1, a hard enamel Infinite Jest pin, AND a hard enamel Poobah pin.
A $50 pledge gets you a one-of-a-kind copy of Vapors 2, signed by me and personalized with a custom message and/or drawing on the inside cover.
A $60 pledge will get you a signed and personalized copy of Vapors 2, plus an Infinite Jest pin,
OR a personalized signed copy of Vapors 2, plus a copy of Vapors 1. (Or I can personalize the Vapors 1 book if you'd prefer.)
A $70 pledge gets you one signed Vapors 2 book, one Vapors 1 book (or vice versa), PLUS an Infinite Jest pin,
OR a signed Vapors 2 book, PLUS an Infinite Jest pin AND a Poobah pin.
A $80 pledge gets you one signed Vapors 2 book, one Vapors 1 book (or vice versa), plus an Infinite Jest pin AND a Poobah pin.
A $90 pledge gets you TWO signed and personalized books, Vapors 2 and Vapors 1.
A $100 pledge gets you one of everything - One signed and personalized copy of Vapors 2, one signed and personalized copy of Vapors 1, one Infinite Jest pin, AND one Poobah pin!
A $150 pledge gets you a whole lot of stuff. First off, you'll get a signed and personalized copy of Vapors 2. In addition, you'll get three more copies of Vapors 2, three copies of Vapors 1, three Infinite Jest pins, and three Poobah pins! Share 'em with your friends and spread the word about this underground series!
How will the money raised be spent?
The basic breakdown of the budget for this project is below. The goal for this campaign represents the baseline cost of printing a run of 500 copies of the comic, pressing 200 hard enamel Infinite Jest pins, plus Kickstarter's processing fees and packaging and postage expenses, estimated based on the last campaign.
Stretch Goal #1 - $4000: Six new Vaporettes! ***REACHED***
Yup, SIX. I've written six new Vaporette scripts and I'll be commissioning six guest artists to illustrate them in their own styles for the book. The book might even end up having more Vaporette pages than there are in the actual Chapter 2 - who knows??
This stretch goal's amount will go towards paying the guest artists for their work, as well as the additional printing cost of adding their pages to the book.
The guest artists are, in no particular order: KazeeSnep, NexusMania, Jade S. Morot, Cheesy Manfredo, Hippocrit, and Munchy. S'a pretty good lineup if you ask me.
Each guest artist will receive a 50 cent commission for each copy of Vapors 2 that's sold during this campaign. So by supporting the campaign, you're supporting each of them as well!
Stretch Goal #2 - $6666: COMMUNISM! ***REACHED***
From each according to their ability; to each according to their need.
And what does everyone need? The dollar, dollar, dollar that's what you need.
So what I'm saying is, if the campaign hits $6666 raised, everyone who's pledged for a physical reward will get ONE (1) AMERICAN DOLLAR.
This is true egalitarianism in action. High-rolling fatcat landlords pledging $100 and proletariat peasant wage slaves pledging $15 are all valued equally. And that value is precisely ONE (1) AMERICAN DOLLAR.
You can think of it as a $1 discount on every reward tier if you want. Or, if you're a person of higher moral character, you can see it for what it is:
THE DREAM OF MARX, MADE MANIFEST AT LAST.
Vote Bernie, kids.
Stretch Goal #2 - $10,000: New PINS FOR ALL! (P4A) ***REACHED***
Okay. We've all learned a few things now. With the benefit of hindsight we can ask ourselves: was Communism a mistake? Did a "lot" of people "die"? Maybe. Do I look like a historian to you?
But either way, it's fine. It's 2019 and we millennials know collective ownership of the means of production is still hip and cool as long as you don't use the C-word. That's why I'm here today to announce my bold new plan for the economy: PINS FOR ALL (P4A, for short).
Under P4A, everyone who's pledged enough for a physical reward ($15 and up) will receive their normal rewards, PLUS the bonus dollar, PLUS, A NEW PIN as a BONUS reward!! Specifically, my Heart Logo. I think it'd look pretty cool as a pin so I'll make them and give them to all of you as an additional Thank You for pledging.
The pin will be SIIIIMPLE AND CLEEEEEAN, black enamel with the logo and border in silver. I dunno I think it'll look nice. c:
Stretch Goal #3 - $11,111: Help Save NLACakaNM and Send a Slimeoid to College! ***REACHED***
During the time this campaign has been running, an unfortunate thing happened. The forces of CWCville launched a devastating eco-terrorism attack against New Los Angeles City, aka Neo Milwaukee (NLACakaNM) in an attempt to eradicate its population. Though the CWCville propaganda machine publicly claims that NLACakaNM has been de-Slimed (and thus eradicated), this is false. The Slimebois of NLACakaNM are still going strong, despite a tragic death toll of at least 70,000.
That's why the NLACakaNM Emergency Rain Relief Fund (NERRF) was founded. NERRF aims to alleviate the suffering of the Slime-loving people of NLACakaNM even as the Bicarbonate Soda Rains created by Chris-Chan Sonichu continue to ravage it.
NERRF believes that real change begins at the individual level. That's why its first goal is to help improve the life of one very special Slimeoid by helping it get an education at New Los Angeles City University so it can enter the workforce as an exploiter of labor, rather than an exploitee!
Stretch Goal #4 - $13,000: Send that Slimeoid to Rehab!
Oh geez. Our Very Special Slimeoid got that high-powered corporate job it was angling for, but it looks like the pressure of the Rat Race took its toll and it tragically developed a substance abuse problem with NLACakaNM's designer drug du jour, Sludge Dust.
Since NERRF has already invested so much in its future, we'd better go all-in. Help us send it to Slimeoid Rehab and get it back on its... feet? Foot? Whatever it's got.
