About

First, the project timeline:

  • August 2012: cast, crew, locations, material, props, logistics.

  • October 2012: editing, marketing.

Second, the content of the movie:

Watch the preliminary movie trailer for a taste!

It's a simple premise: Tea Party myths are not things you teach your children. So what would it be like if a parent did actually indoctrinate their child into Tea Party beliefs?

Satire is what would happen.

The movie therefore will focus on a series of vignettes. These vignettes are not preachy, screechy, damning statements. The movie must sway the audience with humor and understatement. Ayn Rand wrote "The Fountainhead" in 1943. Charles Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol" in 1843. Besides that curious symmetry, there is no single greater rebuttal to Ayn Rand's philosophy than "A Christmas Carol." In the same way, whimsy rather than polemics, will the "Misanthropia" movie proceed.

As the political and social discourse in the USA has gotten more and more shrill, it has begun to twist in tighter arcs, where the usual flash points of race, religion, and class ... corporations, demagoguery, and ideology, they fade from view. And all you are left with is simple meanness. Bah, humbug.

Misanthropes dominate the rhetoric, misanthropism the word meaning a simple hatred of the common man. You cannot educate your children. You cannot have healthcare. If you can't find work, it is your fault. You have no dignity.

"Misanthropia" will not retell "A Christmas Carol." "A Christmas Carol" is invoked in the summary here for 3 main reasons:

  • The novella dramatizes abstract social concepts into an easy to digest parable.
  • The novella does not shout or berate or try to impel people to believe a certain way. It graciously and humbly moves you.
  • Politics is not the focus, personal psychology is.

"Misanthropia" will do the same, and for the sake of the modern jaded audience, it will invoke dry humor and pivot across abstract concepts in clearly articulated episodes.

There is no violent or sexual content in the movie and there is no commentary on race or religion. This would just muddy the central message of the movie. There is however commentary on class divides, but it is not the primary imperative or intent of the movie. The whole movie operates as a series of modern day Aesop's Fables that still follow and build upon each other in service of the dramatic arc.

Third, the actual story:

The following is in the process of being turned into a script, but is much open to rewrite by you, the benefactors (see the Rewards section of this Kickstarter project).

The central conceit of "Misanthropia" will be a father, who is a true believer in the media fire and brimstone he laps up every day. He earnestly tries to instill his Social Darwinist beliefs into his child. But his child feels like a failure, because with each pearl of wisdom they receive from their father about how to treat others and how society works, they only run into great difficulty putting the "wisdom" into practice in their schoolyard social life, especially as their own natural sweet instincts keeps sabotaging their earnest efforts to copy dad.

Each such situation unfolds with delicate comedy, not pathos. The greatest joke of all being of course that Social Darwinism is nothing anyone ever teaches their children. The cognitive dissonance should provide most of the humor and exasperation.

The father works as a limo driver, and he has the incredible luck to get a regular gig chauffeuring one of his media demagogue heroes around town. However, the gig allows the father to begin to bear witness to the media workings behind the curtains of his favorite truisms, and he begins to lose faith. The media demagogue is orchestrating public support for some deregulation legislation, but the motives of various corporate operatives behind the scenes are revealed to be quite base, and the cynicism of the media demagogue disgusts the father as the true narrative behind the media he embraces is revealed.

There is one ending written already, it involves the accidental death of the child, ironically due to the deregulation discussed. The ending is not certain, due to it's dark nature. However, the contrast between the heaviness of the ending and the lightness of the satire might be an effective shock, Indeed, the subject matter is serious and should be taken seriously. A little vinegar with the syrup? But it might be too much.

To be continued... with your help!
