Nomad is a brand new jazz funk/fusion instrumental album from Benjamin Harrison featuring nine incredible musicians from around the world.
On January 15th, 2016 I started working on a new album. Since then it's taken me over two and a half years to compose, record and produce it along with the playing talents of several top-notch session/touring musicians from all around the world that I've met or worked with on my travels and I'm excited to say that it's nearly finished!
All of the parts are recorded and the last big production step remaining is the mixing and mastering, which is one of the most expensive parts of producing an album. The album is being engineered by Simon Cotsworth who has worked on albums and songs from some of my favourite artists such as Incognito, The Brand New Heavies, George Benson, D'Angelo and Level 42.
So I've created a crowd-funding campaign for pre-orders of the album (along with some other unique rewards) to help me with some of the costs associated with finishing the album. I've set the goal at $6,500 which will just cover the costs of the mixing/mastering and if by any chance there happens to be anything extra over this goal, it will go towards promoting and publicizing the album.
The album is titled Nomad, which I felt was fitting as the album has been composed and produced while I've been on the road touring around the world with several Cirque du Soleil shows for the past several years; and hence my life during this time has been very nomadic in nature.
It's been an incredibly challenging project logistically to bring to fruition as the majority of the parts have been recorded remotely by the musicians involved in the project from all around the world, so it's been a huge labour of love and a wonderfully time intensive project to edit everything together.
The full-length album (51 glorious minutes of music) is comprised of eight original instrumental compositions of mine in an acid jazz/funk/fusion style and features:
- Andrea Vadrucci (Italy) on drums (http://www.andreavadrucci.com/)
- Ben Todd (Australia) on drums and percussion (http://www.bentodd.com.au/)
- Cory Wong (USA) on guitar (https://www.corywongmusic.com/)
- Dane Laboyrie (Australia) on trumpet (https://www.danelaboyrie.com/)
- Daniel McIlvride (Australia) on trombone
- Dre Energy (USA) on drums (http://www.dreenergy.net/)
- Jean-Louis Locas (Canada) on bass guitar
- Quentin Angus (Australia) on guitar (https://www.quentinangus.com/)
- William Lawrence (UK) on guitar
- ...and of course myself on saxophones, ewi, piano/keyboard, synth, bass guitar and programming
Benjamin Harrison is a multi-instrumental musician, composer and producer originally from Australia. He has performed and toured across five continents - most recently with Cirque du Soleil's touring productions of Quidam, KOOZA and VOLTA.
Benjamin grew up in Adelaide, Australia and began performing in musical productions from a young age, initially beginning studies on piano and violin at the age of four. During his early formative years, Benjamin received a scholarship from a special-interest music school where he received the opportunity to perform and tour nationally and internationally with several multi-award-winning classical, jazz and choral ensembles. During this period, Benjamin also achieved several other accolades including selection at the national Generations in Jazz competition playing saxophone in 2004, and as a pianist the following year.
In 2007, Benjamin began studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music and graduated the following year with a Bachelor of Music Performance, specializing in Jazz Saxophone, after being fast-tracked through the course. During his studies Benjamin held the 1st tenor saxophone chair in the Downbeat magazine award-winning Big Band One, and in 2008, received an award from dB Magazine for Top Undergraduate Saxophone.
Benjamin also runs a popular YouTube channel (http://youtube.com/benjaminharrisonmusic) where he regularly releases high quality jam tracks for musicians to practice their soloing and rhythm section skills.
Benjamin is currently the bandleader on Cirque du Soleil's touring production VOLTA (music by Anthony Gonzalez of M83) playing piano, synthesizers, bass guitar and saxophone.
Benjamin is a P. Mauriat saxophones and Légère reeds artist.
Risks and challenges
The fundraising goal for the album is an "all-or-nothing" venture through Kickstarter and making a record takes a lot of time and resources so any help in supporting this release will be greatly appreciated! - Thanks, Ben.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
