This July, we will be building the Hearth – a Secret Garden Part arts funded project to create a ceremonious and magical installation of fiery embers and campfire tales. This project aims to bring people together at the festival by providing a place to gather and marvel in their surroundings. It also aims to connect people from afar and from all around the world by sharing of stories and experiences - just as we might do if sat around a campfire.
We aim to translate the renewal and rebirth that fire represents through this temporary installation that will itself be made and dismantled by the end of the week. Fire, embers and the violent heat of flames offer the possibility of new life with their ashes and it is because of this symbolic power that it forms such an important part of many cultural ceremonies. For the 10th anniversary of the Secret Garden Party festival, we will be constructing the Hearth using glowing uprights, charred elements and charred concrete bases set in a radial arrangement. These bases will also provide places for people to sit within the installation.
At night, fiery embers of UV and LED glowing lights will transform the space. The piece will be bright with orange glow, contrasting with the rich textures of charred material. Lights will become brighter and more intense towards the heart of the Hearth to create something that draws people in and forms the impression of occupying a fiery place, with a sense of excitement.
We are using all the time and love we can give to design and build this structure. However, it would not be complete without your valuable contribution! Your Campfire Tales can form a key part of this installation and realise our ambition to bring people together through the sharing of stories and experiences. We would love to hear any tales that you might have to give and ask you to send them written down and ready for us to have read out and recorded into a custom audio track, compete with a crackling fiery background. Whether a whimsical recollection, favourite childhood story, wisdom, adventurous or dedicated to a loved one to celebrate something meaningful... (as long as it’s not offensive)... anything goes here!
If you are not keen on submitting a story but would still like to donate then please do. However, it would be great to get many different stories from lots of different people – so why not ask your family and friends? Each tale will be given its own time and opportunity within the audio track to inhabit the installation and seep out into the festival and adjoining Badger Woods. Your support forms an integral part of this project - allowing participants to share stories from afar and allowing attendees to listen to the tales of others.
Although we have secured some funding towards the project, we are being as ambitious as we can and money raised through Kickstarter can help us source the additional lighting equipment and speakers to make this fiery environment something special. Valuable funding will also enable us to purchase the large drill required and will go to towards equipment, such as hiring a truck for transportation and a concrete mixer for construction. All these elements will then be lovingly brought together by our hands. There are 7 of us that will be constructing the Hearth who are all funding our own travel, accommodation and festival going experiences. Therefore, all money raised will go directly towards making this project happen!
As a group of young architects, we are passionate about creating beautiful spaces in our own time that delight and surprise. We love to test, build and experiment with our hands; outside of office environments and our daily jobs. Last year and with the help of Kickstarter supporters, we designed and built the Wet Dream – a whimsical installation of English rain in the parched desert for the Burning Man festival in Nevada. The project was a real success and it is through projects such as this and the Hearth that we aim to continue to learn, push ourselves and explore the things about architecture that we love, such as active spaces that involve participants, relationships through community and space and the importance of bottom up, user-led design through interactive art.
Your support and participation can really make a difference!
