About

► Substream WebsiteSteam GreenlightFacebookMailing List ● YouTube

About the Game ► Substream is a third-person aerial shooter for Windows PC, with arcade on-rails gameplay reminiscent of the Starfox series, Rogue Squadron or Space Harrier. And it’s a music game, with synchronized events and highly responsive environments.

Looped Space ► In Substream’s universe space is wrapped into a narrow loop. As you fly through the environment a single enemy will appear in multiple positions ahead of you, and your lone aircraft becomes a squadron stretching off to infinity.

Features ► Substream will include:
● Eight single-player levels, each changing their environment and pace as the music progresses.
● Two game modes, based around two different aircraft with different handling, speed and weapons.
● Four+ collectable powerups including homing missiles and plasma bombs. Like the railgun in the video, they each have their own "prime" and detonate states.

Substream is designed to respond not just to the rhythm and intensity of music, but its melodies, moods and themes. The game’s environments are fully dynamic, morphing and animating constantly. Enemy attacks and game events are often synchronized with individual instruments in the soundtrack.

The Musicians ►

Every level in Substream is inspired by a different piece of music, by a different artist, in a different genre. Metal, hip-hop, chiptune, nu-jazz, drum-n-bass, samba and more. Nine artists from six countries, including the creators of celebrated indie game soundtracks: Souleye (VVVVVV) and Tomáš Dvořák aka Floex (Machinarium).

My name's Ben Bradley and I live in Southampton, England. Before becoming an independent game developer I worked for five years as a programmer at game studio Sumo Digital where I helped ship five titles for Wii, PSP and Xbox 360. I'm currently working as a graphics programmer on industrial simulation software.

The Story So Far ► I began developing Substream in 2010. I left my job in the games industry and used my personal savings mixed with some freelance work to develop the game full-time. This worked well until 2012 when my wife’s career brought us to a new city. The decision to create a crowd funding campaign was not one I made casually, but after working here for two years I have not been able to save the money I need to finish developing this game.

Kickstarter Funding ► Substream is already two thirds complete. The tech is largely finished and half of the game levels are playable. The goal of this Kickstarter is to enable me to complete the game through full-time work and release it in 2015.

I’ve chosen Kickstarter because I believe the all-or-nothing crowd funding system is the right way to do things: If this Kickstarter campaign does not reach its target, Substream’s development will not be funded and no money will be taken from you.

Pledging at a higher tier gains you better rewards. Most of the images below are a guide or a mock up and the final reward may look a little different. Digital rewards will be sent to you as they become available. Your physical rewards will be mailed to you together as soon as they are all ready.

Alpha Access ► When the Kickstarter ends you'll receive an in-development version of the game with four levels to play. I'll update you as the project develops with beta versions containing more levels.

Soundtrack EP ► A downloadable collection of four music tracks taken from the game's soundtrack.

Those buying the physical game will have access to a digital download too, so you can play Substream while you wait for delivery.

Music ► from artists that have contributed to the Substream soundtrack.
● epic45's "Monument" EP, 6 tracks, ambient post-rock
● Souleye's "S" album, 10 tracks, chiptune
● Tom Mauritzon's "2039" album, 9 tracks, cyberpunk electronica
These will all be provided as digital MP3 downloads.

Soundtrack and DLC ► This represents the promise that if any official soundtrack or extra level packs are created you will get a free digital copy. (I haven't arranged for a full soundtrack at this time as I'd like to do something special and include any tracks from DLC, remixes and bonus content). I can not make a guarantee that any soundtrack or DLC will be created for the game at this time, but I'd really like to produce both if I can.

Risks and challenges

Crowd funding involves taking money for a product before it is developed. I take this responsibility very seriously.

Schedule ► The biggest risk with any game is that it will overrun it's schedule, delaying the release date, or reducing the quantity or quality of some features. I have high confidence in Substream's development schedule because I have developed enough levels, weapons, menus and enemies to know how long it takes to develop each of these things on average. These past experiences now form the basis for my future plans.

Release Guarantee ► I have already held a commitment to finishing Substream for several years. The game is currently in alpha with two thirds of development work already done. In the event that funds do run dry before the game is complete I will have several options: opening further pre-orders, taking on part-time or full-time work, or releasing the game with a level missing and patching it in later. I will use any combination of these needed to bring the game to completion.

Rewards ► These are all low-risk. Any rewards lost in the postal system will be replaced.

There are few unknowns at this stage in development; Substream simply needs my time to bring it to completion.
