The Font Deck is a practical guide to typography, printed on high-quality Bicycle® playing cards.
Each of the 52 faces contains a mini-lesson about fonts, complete with a beautiful visual example.
With this deck, designers and non-designers alike can learn the fundamentals and key terms of typography, improve at recognizing important fonts, discover fascinating history, and get better at using typography in their daily lives.
It's essentially a typography textbook crammed into a deck of cards.
Here is a list of the topics covered on the faces of the cards.
The Font Deck is being printed by the United States Playing Card Company, in Erlanger, Kentucky. They make the best playing cards in the world, including Bicycle® and Bee®, casino-quality decks. The smallest batch they will produce is 2,500 decks, so that's why your pledges will give me the funds and quantities to manufacture with such a great company.
This deck is being printed on Bicycle® card stock, with Air-Cushion finish. Air-Cushion finish is a linen-textured coating on the cards that give them an incredibly smooth, slippery feel. They're a pleasure to play with.
The USPCC's high-quality industrial printing presses give the cards a rich, vibrant colour, and the lettering is very crisp and legible.
The Design Deck
In 2014, I designed and kickstarted the Design Deck, and received tremendous support from the design community, with almost 1000 backers.
Since then, thousands have of Decks have been sent to dozens of countries. The Design Deck is available as a reward for this campaign, so you can have the pair of decks. If you'd like to purchase the Design Deck and get it right away, click here to visit my website.
Another pledge reward for backing the Font Deck is the 'How to Choose a Typeface' poster that I designed. It allows you to answer a few simple questions, follow the flow chart, and then arrive at the perfect font for your project.
The History of Typography
A few years ago, I created a stop-motion animation about the history of typography. It seemed to strike a chord with people, receiving more than a million views, and that prompted me to create the Design Deck and now, the Font Deck.
Thanks for your support!
