Stretch Goal Reached! Now being printed by Bicycle® – the finest card-maker!
The Design Deck is a great way to learn about Graphic Design
Graphic Design is a hugely useful skill, and we are surrounded by it in almost every part of our lives, but most people know very little about it. The Design Deck is a fun and simple way to learn the essentials of graphic design, improve your skills as a designer, and understand more about the design you interact with everyday.
The Design Deck contains distilled, essential information about the practice of graphic design. Each of the 52 faces has a piece of useful design information, complete with a visual example, combining to create a well-rounded, thorough examination of the subject.
To curate the information, I combed through many of the best graphic design books on the market. I did my best to concentrate the wisdom of these brilliant authors, and put it in a concise, practical form. Below is a photograph of the collection of design books that went into making The Design Deck.
Even with the large quantity of design information found on The Design Deck, it is also a fully functional deck of playing cards. It is printed on thick 310gsm cardstock with a linen texture that makes them great for card games, and even magic tricks.
If the campaign continues on its great upward trajectory, we are almost definitely printing with Bicycle (USPCC), who make the very best cards in the whole world!
The back-up manufacturer is makeplayingcards.com, and they also make a high-quality product. The prototype I received is very well-printed, and I am very happy with the quality.
Here's a sampling of some of the great cards that will be in the deck!
Stretch Goal Reached!
This project has received so much great support that the Design Deck is now being printed with Bicycle® (USPCC), who make absolutely the finest cards in the world. And printing with Bicycle brings with it the possibility of embossed tuck cases, gilded edge cards and many more exciting add-ons that will likely be used on the deck.
What still needs to happen
I am currently putting the final design touches on the deck, and making sure it looks as good as possible before the final production run. I'll keep backers up to date with how everything is coming along.
The Design Deck is in a state of development where it will be complete and ready for ordering and subsequent delivery by the time the campaign has ended. Backers can expect to receive their Design Decks in July, 2014.
"How to Choose a Typeface" poster
As an additional reward level, I am offering a print-out of a flowchart poster I made, called "How to Choose a Typeface". It is a quick guide to help you choose a font for any design situation, and can be pinned up near your work space for easy reference. It is printed on 11 x 17 paper, but will be folded in half to fit into a standard-sized envelope for shipping. See a small version of the poster below.
My inspiration: The History of Typography
I began thinking seriously about graphic design education and how I could play a part in it about one year ago, in February 2013. I had recently fallen in love with typography, and was surprised by the lack good instructional videos about it online. I decided to take the matter into my own hands, and made an animated short called The History of Typography. It garnered a lot of interest online, being featured in The Atlantic, Fast Company, Gizmodo, Dezeen, getting feature spot at the Youtube booth at the 2013 Google Developers Conference, and getting over 3/4 of a million views. That experience showed me that people are seriously interested in learning more about graphic design, and want it in mediums other than books.
I hope The Design Deck can spread the love of graphic design to many more people!
Here is the video about The History of Typography I made in 2013 that got me thinking about this whole thing.
Thanks very much for your support.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge I'll likely face is the distribution of The Design Deck. If this campaign becomes very popular, that means I'll have a lot of packaging and shipping to do, and it will be a large task to get all the rewards sent out by the estimated delivery date.
If this circumstance arrises, I will enlist the help of some friends and family, and get the job done!
Besides this, I don't see any other challenges arising. The design process is nearly done, the prototype printed excellently, and now I'm just waiting on funders!
