“Though this be madness, yet there is method in't.”
Allow us a moment to rewind to the not so distant past. Two women shake hands on what is to mark the beginning of an ambitious journey. One woman is Seoul Shakespeare Company’s Artistic Director and the other - an impassioned director courageous enough to take the reins of a project as terrifying as William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
With production team fully assembled, and the show cast down to the final spear-holding guard, we are a full month into rehearsals for our third Shakespearean production to take place in Seoul, South Korea. We have stripped Hamlet to its very bones, taking a visionary approach allowing actors to encompass a dangerously isolated world. Removing all sense of period or sleight of hand, and surrounding Hamlet in a desperately cold environment, this is Shakespeare as raw as we can hope to make it.
"What is a man, if his chief good and market of his time be but to sleep and feed? A beast, no more."
Producing Shakespeare in South Korea is a labour of absolute love, one which entails very real obstacles for us as foreign artists. We encounter the very same logistical and financial challenges faced by all ambitious artists, but with added linguistic and cultural boundaries. This is where we need your help.
Our production will mark the first Hamlet ever to be performed in English in Seoul, a fact that excites us very much. To make this production possible, and the best it can be, we need your help - for space rental, advertising, printing, and a thousand other minor expenses that we could bore you with. The blunt truth is IF WE DON’T MEET OUR KICKSTARTER GOAL WE LOSE OUR THEATRE and may be performing our Hamlet on the street. No one wants to see Hamlet tossed into the cold. Well... maybe a disgruntled king or two, but not us. Not our Hamlet.
“Doubt thou the stars are fire; Doubt that the sun doth move; Doubt truth to be a liar; But never doubt I love.”
Take a look to the right. We have some pretty rad rewards in return for your generosity. The smallest donation helps, tremendously, and more than you can ever know. If you can't afford to donate (we've spent our share of Ramen weeks and can fully relate as starving artists), please help us by sharing and liking our campaign. We need every ounce of help we may get!
From our very hearts, from our entire Hamlet cast and production team, from Seoul Shakespeare Company and the Seoul theatre community, we would like to thank you in advance for your kindness and generosity. We absolutely could not do this without your continued support!
"This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man."
Risks and challenges
Once our project is successfully funded, we still face additional fundraising challenges. We are asking for a fraction of what we need to fund our rehearsal and theatre rental.
We have one other fundraising event planned and an army of a production team to ensure our project is fully completed. Even if not funded, the show will shine in a smaller venue. The passion of our cast and production team is overwhelming, and we are planning to work against all obstacles to bring this show to fruition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
