DAY 20 Livestream - The FINAL livestream!
Don't forget, if you want the original drawing, it's only available for the next 24hrs! Grab it in the rewards below!
Psst! You can watch all the previous livestream in the Updates section.
Descend into the Twilight, a world of illegal street races and genetically engineered animal companions, where the only thing more dangerous than the competition is the girl in its midst.
Race is a short story set in the futuristic world of The Hero Rebellion, where genetic engineering has created fantastic animals, some big enough to ride and others small enough to ride on your shoulder.
It’s a no-holds-barred race through the underbelly of a futuristic, floating city, with a teenage heroine who’s anything but a hero.
If you’re a fan of action-packed sci-fi and butt-kicking heroines who are somewhat less than heroic, this is the project for you.
You can grab a free copy of the ebook* (minus the awesome illustrations) here!
(*The ebook is the regular edition of Race, without all of the extras that will go into the Kickstarter edition.)
The Kickstarter edition of Race is a collaborative project between me and you!
This campaign will fund an illustrated edition of Race, annotated with behind-the-scenes notes and a few secrets (and maybe some spoilers). It will be published in both paperback and eBook formats.
What makes this project different is that all of the notes, illustrations and secrets will be chosen by the project backers (aka. you) and created during the campaign. Each day of the campaign I’ll host a livestream where I’ll write and/or draw the ‘extras’ to be included in the book. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and suggest changes!
The originals will then be available for purchase at special backer levels, which will be available for 24 HOURS ONLY, and include a little something extra on the back.
CHOOSE YOUR COVER!
Race had a bit of a redesign mid-way through editing, resulting in 2 different covers. The New cover is what is available at retailers, and complements the new Hero (book 1) audiobook, while the Original version is in the same style as the existing paperbacks.
Not sure if you want to go all-in? Then the Digital tier is for you. You’ll get an ebook of the special edition with the New cover.
If you prefer paper over electrons, the Paper tier is where it’s at. Not only will you get a signed paperback of the special edition, you’ll also get to choose the cover you want—New or Original to complement your existing Hero Rebellion collection!
Sometimes, you just have to have both. The Collector’s Edition features both the Original and New cover variants, in ebook and paperback. The paperbacks will be signed by me (yes, the actual author).
Get the original artwork from the daily livestream PLUS all of the rewards in the previous tiers! As an extra special thank you, the original artwork will have a little something extra on the back.
Join the cast of the next Hero short story! Pick this tier and I will create a character based upon you, who will make an appearance in the next Hero short story. PLUS all of the rewards in the Collector’s Edition tier!
The original Hero Crate was a limited edition, handmade book box, but for this Kickstarter campaign, I've added a few extra goodies. There were only 50 of the original crates ever made, and there are only 14 left.
Inside the The Hero Crate you’ll find
- the complete The Hero Rebellion trilogy, signed and in paperback
- a teaser for Cold Between Stars, the next instalment in the Jørn series
- a jelly bean version of Hero’s medication
- even more artwork by the incredibly talented Rose Hammer, and
- candle melts scented to match selected characters' minds.
PLUS you’ll get all of the rewards in the Collector’s Edition tier.
Physics makes my brain hurt, while quadratics make me go cross-eyed and any mention of probability equations will have me running for the door. Nonetheless, I love watching documentaries about the natural world, biology, space, history and technology.
I’m also a sucker for a fast horse, a faster computer and superhero movies. When I’m not doing the horse, computer or superhero thing, I write science fiction (emphasis on the fiction), where I love to write about butt-kicking girls who blow stuff up.
The Hero Rebellion was my first series and I’m currently working on the next, taking the “psychic mutant animals”, mixing them with a few aliens and shooting them into the depths of space. It’s gonna be a hoot.
That’s right, YOU! I might be doing the writing and drawing, but you’re here to tell me what to write and draw. Without you this project may happen, but it won't be anywhere near as awesome.
All physical reward tiers include shipping anywhere in Australia, with worldwide shipping available for a small additional fee.
The physical books will be packed in sturdy, snug-fitting mailers constructed from heavy-duty cardboard with special folds to prevent damage. Hero Crates are also packed in a heavy-duty mailer, with plenty of padding inside to stop books and swag from bouncing around in transit.
Because of you! The book’s already written and edited, the cover’s done, all that’s left are the drawings and other extras. And that’s where you come in. What’s going to make this special edition of Race special is you.
Every day during the campaign, it will be your suggestions and votes that determine what extras go in the book. They could be drawings of characters or vehicles, a deeper explanation of the story or world, or super-secret spoilers.
AND if you select the “Join the Cast” tier, not only do you get all of the above, you can help me design a character to go in the next Hero short story too!
As you can see from the pie chart, the majority of funds are going towards shipping the physical rewards. That’s because shipping in Australia is really expensive. I'm using a combination of Australia Post and a courier service, Sendle, to keep the costs as low as possible, without sacrificing reliability.
All of the paperbacks will be printed by IngramSpark, at their Melbourne facility. IngramSpark is one of the leading book printing and distribution services in the world, specialising in print-on-demand (POD) book printing. I’ll be using their POD service, which is the most economical for producing high-quality print runs under 500 units.
This covers the fee Kickstarter charges to host the campaign and collect pledges.
If I’ve learned one thing, it’s that something unexpected always pops up. The Oops! Factor will (hopefully) cover any unforeseen expenses.
Risks and challenges
The ebook and both cover variants are done! That just leaves the illustrations and other extras, printing the paperbacks, packing and shipping. While I don’t expect many risks with those, there’s always something that can go wrong.
My biggest challenges (and fears), in order are:
1. NO ONE WILL SUGGEST ANYTHING TO GO IN THE BOOK!
In the event this happens, I’ve asked the people on my mailing list what extras they would like to see in the book and compiled a “backup” list.
2. NO ONE TURNS UP TO THE LIVESTREAMS!
This is more of a fear than a challenge and I’m going to squash it like a bug. If no one turns up to the livestreams, I shall make funny faces at the camera. Maybe even do a silly dance.
Come to think of it, it might be worth no one turning up just to get the replay of me being a twit.
3. THIS IS MY FIRST KICKSTARTER!
To be honest, this is my biggest challenge. I’ve read a lot of blogs, books and listened to days worth of podcasts about running a Kickstarter, but nothing really prepares you for doing something new. To help myself out, I’ve:
- given myself more time than I think I’ll need to pack and ship rewards
- found an experienced third-party to deliver the ebooks and provide end-user support
- sourced robust, secure packaging so that your rewards arrive in pristine condition, and
- kept this Kickstarter campaign simple(-ish). Let’s be real though, anything that involves livestream daily for 20 days can’t be that simple.
MY PROMISE TO YOU
No matter what happens, all through this process I will keep you up-to-date with what’s going on and what I’m doing to fix any issues that arise.
