In Brazil, there exists two very different worlds within the confines of a single country, even a single city. For the rich and poor in Sao Paulo, Brazil life couldn’t be more different. With social stratification only second to that of Sierra Leone’s, Brazilians are clearly marked being either rich or poor. This difference is often times boiled down to the differences of skin color.
A single wall topped with electric wires or glass shards is often the only barrier separating the mostly fair-skinned rich and the largely darker-skinned poor.
The idea behind One Country Two Worlds (OCTW) sprouted from the dissonance I (Rebekah Moore) felt as I straddled the line between the rich and poor in Brazil. On a scholarship to attend an elite private high school during the week and then on the weekends working with kids in the slums and on the street with my parent’s non-profit my life was literally separated into two worlds that seemed to never intersect. Although Brazil is one country it is two different worlds both economically and racially.
This summer, five years after I first moved to Brazil and twelve years after my first visit, I am preparing to return to Sao Paulo to film One Country Two Worlds to uncover the realities of inequality and discrimination that have been long ignored by a country that would have the rest of the world believe it a “racial democracy”.
OCTW will feature two young men and two young women who live at completely opposite sides of the social spectrum in Brazil. For the boys, soccer will be used as a meeting point, or an equalizer. For the girls the equalizer will be each of their 15th birthday parties.
Along with showing several aspects of their lives there will be scholar, professional and political interviews that will verbalize and explore different explanations for what is happening in Brazilian society and how it reached this point of being deemed a ‘social apartheid’.
The aim of OCTW is to uncover and educate people on the realities of the Brazilian social apartheid specifically as it relates to education and the workforce to inspire change and community involvement in abolishing the vast systemic segregation.
