BEER CAP BASEBALL has an interesting back-story but first a brief summary about how the game is played…and it couldn’t be simpler.
First, find a live baseball game to watch on TV. Next, find a family member or buddy who also enjoys watching baseball…or someone who simply likes guessing about stuff that’s about to happen. Then, set up the Beer Cap Baseball playing surface in front of the game and take, in your respective possessions, six beer caps of the same color – 3 for predicting and 3 for keeping score (place these three on the scoreboard zeroes).
Before you start playing, collectively determine the length of your head-to-head challenge – play by the inning or for the whole game…or something in-between. Or, if preferred, declare a target -- e.g. 1,000 points – and play first to get there, wins! With the “leader” always promptly predicting first, place your caps on the play(s) on the playing surface that you think will happen with each batter who steps up to the plate. Using the scoreboard grid to tally successful prognostications, place your predictions with your caps…and PLAY BALL!
Beer Cap Baseball evolved from a board game called ODDS-ON BASEBALL – that was heralded with an “Honorable Mention” by OMNI Magazine in its 1981 Games of the Year edition. While the concept of predicting live sports plays in a board game was novel and fun, the ODDS-ON version had its flaws – specifically, the scoring system. Using poker chips to keep track of wins and losses for an unlimited number of players was quite chaotic. As a result, a couple of key changes were developed and implemented for BEER CAP BASEBALL. By turning the concept into a head-to-head, two player challenge and adding a quick and easy scoreboard feature, the game now works pretty darn smoothly! And if there’s more than a pair who want to play, just scoop up another copy of the game…and enjoy!
One last thing -- Beer Cap Baseball is designed to liven up even the dullest of baseball games. That’s because the score on the field is secondary to the score on the Beer Cap Baseball scoreboard – where correct predictions are what matter most, not runs, hits or RBI’s!
Risks and challenges
Always the optimists, the BEER CAP BASEBALL project has been time-lined for a mid-June launch – just in time for Father’s Day fulfillment! And as far as our research indicates, if funding is accomplished by the end of April, we should be able to secure all components for early June shipping. Because the elements are minimal, we do not anticipate a problem in keeping up with demand. The same goes for the additional incentives provided at the bonus levels.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
