...is a hardcover tome collecting the charming, virtuosic and staggeringly detailed work of the great cartoonist and illustrator Harrison Cady.
At a towering 10x14" and 176+ pages, it is a vital historical document, a permanent monument to a master of his form, and a staggering cloth-bound art object, all in one.
Walter Harrison Cady (1877–1970) was one of the definitive magazine illustrators and cartoon artists of the first half of the 20th century.
Over the course of a 70 year professional career, he created countless overflowing worlds, bustling with life and energy and detail and chaos. His illustrations were generous, abundant, warm and humane. There was never another artist like him.
He specialized in frenzied crowd scenes, in which each tiny character came armed with their own distinct personality and a sense of humor that projected off the page.
He especially loved animals and insects, spawning and exploring vast eco-systems of creeping crawlers with human affectations: beetle ballerinas, ladybugs in spats and umbrellas, fiddle-playing mosquitos.
A committed political progressive, Cady frequently made cartoons about women's suffrage, injustice and the exploitation of the working classes.
In his long and productive career, he laid an endless array of visual feasts out for the eyes of readers and art-appreciators all over the world.
But, as is too often the case with illustrators and cartoon artists, his work faded from memory very quickly once his career ended. Though there remains a loyal cadre of fans and collectors, trading old tear-sheets and weathered magazine clippings, his name is largely unknown by modern lovers of illustration, cartooning and graphic art.
MADNESS IN CROWDS: THE TEEMING MIND OF HARRISON CADY is a corrective to that sad state of affairs.
This is the second entry in our continuing line of oversized art book biographies of forgotten masters of comics, fine art and illustration, following this year's THE TEMPLE OF SILENCE: FORGOTTEN WORKS & WORLDS OF HERBERT CROWLEY.
MADNESS IN CROWDS: THE TEEMING MIND OF HARRISON CADY continues our mission of excavating the history of cartooning, illustration and graphic art to preserve and present hidden treasures like these.
Please join our campaign to make sure that this glorious and beautiful artwork is remembered.

Risks and challenges
With nine successful Kickstarters over several ventures totaling more than half a million dollars to our name, Josh and Maëlle are veterans of crowdfunded publishing. We know the tricky logistics of fulfilling these projects, and know how to overcome the inevitable hurdles in our way.
We've assembled all the artwork to be included in the book. We've carefully priced out production costs for all magazines, prints and ancillary rewards, as well as expenses for domestic and overseas shipping. We’ve planned for the logistics of reward fulfillment. We know exactly how much money we need to get this project across the finish line. All we need is to finish the job is you.
There are many risks and challenges involved with publishing. Problems can pop up in ways we can't always predict. But we get better at this every time we do it. We have the knowledge, experience and commitment to persevere through difficulties and deliver a product that meets and exceeds the exacting expectations of our audience of discerning readers and collectors.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
