About

"A genius idea" - Jon Sheiber, TechCrunch

BeeBoard gives you the familiar, time-tested utility of the traditional bulletin board, a space for your iPad and a free social digital signage app that allows you to connect and share with family and friends.

A new way to connect and share

Blackboards, whiteboards, corkboards: they’ve been hanging on the walls of our schools, homes, offices and public spaces for as long as we can remember. Despite having access to social media, text messaging and the like, digital forms of communication can’t replace our interaction with the physical world. We still value hand-written notes, old ticket stubs, flyers, the artwork our kids bring home, and gorgeously printed invitations. Bulletin boards give us a big-picture overview of what’s going on in our family, workspace and community. Though still incredibly useful, they haven’t changed in almost seventy years. So we’re bringing them into the digital age by enchanting them with IoT technology so you can do things like post bulletins from your phone. We achieved this in the most comprehensive and thoughtful way possible. Say hello to BeeBoard, a new way to connect and share.

Yesterday’s bulletin board, reimagined for today

BeeBoard isn’t just an ordinary bulletin board with a space to hold a tablet computer. Over the past 18 months, our team of MIT-trained engineers, along with our coders, designers, suppliers and partners, have scrutinized every aspect of the architecture, design, functionality and construction of both its hardware and software, making BeeBoard not only the first social digital signage system, but also what we believe to be the finest bulletin board anywhere. We want BeeBoard to be at the center of every smart and connected home, family and community and to serve as a platform that is both firmly rooted in the past and ready for the future.

A great use for old tablets

Once we started testing BeeBoard in our own homes, we realized how perfectly the iPad functioned as a fixed location device.

These days, iPads are pretty ubiquitous. As more and more models are released, the cost of used and refurbished tablets keeps going down. Plus, you or someone you know might have an iPad lying around that doesn't get much use. Why not give it new life with BeeBoard?

BeeBoard Granville

BeeBoard Granville features a naturally harvested corkboard, convenient writing surface, and a solid wood frame with a space to hold your iPad for use and display.

Solid wood frame

Most bulletin boards are cheaply made with low-quality wood composite frames that don’t complement a well-designed home. For BeeBoard’s frame, we hand-picked a selection of solid woods known for their strength, durability, and handsome, time-honored appeal. The frame is held together with dovetail keys--an ancestral joinery technique that offers exceptional strength and fidelity.

Frame options

  • Black Walnut
  • Oak
  • Cherry
  • Poplar in Eggshell White

Naturally-harvested Portuguese cork

We chose naturally harvested Portuguese cork for its strength, thickness and warm natural graining. And instead of adding cheap filler material, we used two layers of cork, allowing pushpins to stick in and slide out with maximum ease.

Cork Options

Writing surfaces

Each writing surface was chosen for its unique properties and aesthetic appeal. Choose from natural slate, blackboard, or whiteboard.

Natural slate

  • Salvaged from old schools
  • Resurfaced for a smoother writing surface
  • Warm vintage aesthetic

Porcelain-coated magnetic chalkboard

  • Matte black finish
  • Scratch, stain, and fade resistant
  • Smooth writing surface allows for vibrant color contrast

Porcelain-coated magnetic whiteboard

  • Incredibly smooth writing surface
  • Scratch and stain resistant
  • Easy to erase

Tablet compartment

BeeBoard seamlessly integrates your iPad into the overall design. The tablet is secured firmly in place by a removable back panel, which prevents movement during use. BeeBoard even has an opening for your charger, so you can juice up whenever you device’s battery is low.

Easy to hang

BeeBoard comes with a French cleat to mount to your wall. French cleats are one of the strongest and easiest ways to hang heavy items--so strong in fact, they’re traditionally used to secure cabinets in place.

Modular design

The wooden back panel is easy to remove, allowing you to conveniently replace your corkboard or writing surface when the time comes or your needs change.

American craftsmanship

Designed with exacting precision in Boston and meticulously crafted in America’s heartland, BeeBoard is made with the highest quality materials we could find. We are confident that your BeeBoard will look great in any space and withstand years of swiping, pinning, and doodling.

We made the decision to have BeeBoard made in America so we can easily oversee its production, ensure its quality, and contribute to our country's economy.

BeeBoard: The App

As a small tech startup, we opened our office (aka the founder's house) to guests to help finance operations. This also allowed us to test BeeBoard on a wide range of people and see how they interacted with it. The guests loved it. On the corkboard, we put up things like train passes, takeout menus, and extra sets of keys. The tablet allowed our guests to easily pull up directions, video chat with friends, and access the stereo system and other home automation apps. But there was something missing. We couldn't find a good, intuitive app that let us post bulletins to the tablet while we were away from the house. So, we built our own software from the ground up. The BeeBoard app is built with the latest technology, and is the first social digital signage for in-home use.

What makes the BeeBoard digital signage app social?

The BeeBoard app lets you post to your own board or to someone else's, so you can stay connected to those closest to you. Snap a photo of your kid's latest artwork and post it to Grandma's board so she can enjoy it too. Post holiday travel details to your son's board while he's away at college. Post a birthday message for your niece across the country. The possibilities are endless.

Publish from your smartphone to your tablet

The BeeBoard Social Digital Signage System consists of two free apps working together to allow you to post, share and display content to one or multiple BeeBoards.

BeeBoard bulletins are displayed on your iPad, but controlled through your iPhone so you can add and update on the go. Bulletins are organized into specific channels, which you can create, curate, and invite other members to view or contribute to.

The BeeBoard Publisher

The publisher runs on your smartphone and allows you to create, post and share content in the form of digital bulletins. You can add images, text, and frames to your bulletins and post them from wherever you are.

Here are a few examples of what you can post:

  • Family photos
  • Notes and reminders
  • Grocery lists
  • Digital flyers
  • Invitations
  • Birthday messages or holiday cards
  • Inspirational quotes and images
  • Artwork

With BeeBoard, you’re in control of where your content is shown. Your bulletins are organized in channels that can be shared with others. The contents of the selected channel are shown on the publisher and on the viewer at the same time (i.e. you can check your phone to see what’s being displayed on your BeeBoard in real-time). You can switch channels, reorder bulletins or remove them on the go.

Here are a few channel ideas:

  • A household channel with chore assignments, schedules, reminders, and grocery lists
  • A channel for your extended family with photos, artwork, reunion info, wedding details, and notes
  • An office channel with deadline reminders and company announcements
  • A channel with photos and artwork for when guests come over
  • Channels for specific events like birthdays, holidays, dinner parties, office visits
  • Channels for specific times of day, like a morning channel with reminders and inspirational quotes and images

The BeeBoard Viewer

The BeeBoard Viewer turns your tablet into a digital signage system for your home or office, keeping the things that matter in plain sight. With this app, you can store more information in less space. Corkboard looking a little cluttered? Snap photos of important notes or flyers and post them to your BeeBoard Viewer as digital bulletins. BeeBoard bulletins are timed to cycle on their own or can be swiped through to be viewed. Your BeeBoard channels can be controlled from your phone or directly on your tablet.

BeeBoard Community

By creating BeeBoard we are establishing a platform that we hope will be at the center of your home, family and community. We want BeeBoard to help you be more informed, connected and closer to the people, events and information that matter to you. We want to keep an ongoing dialogue with you so that we can make our product useful and relevant to you and your surroundings.

The Evolution of BeeBoard

BeeBoard has gone through a number of iterations since its conception in 2014. Changes in both the physical board and the app have been informed by team members, suppliers, experts, friends, family, and various user groups to bring you an intuitive, high-quality product.

The future of BeeBoard

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, we plan to make an API so the developer community can build BeeBoard Publisher and Viewer plugins. The beauty of an app is that it’s a living, breathing product that can be updated according to the needs of our users. This app is for you, so we’d love to hear your feedback. How would you use BeeBoard? Is there anything the app doesn’t do that you wish it would (you know, aside from running your errands and hand-feeding you Belgian chocolate)?

Risks and challenges

As with any new product launch, there’s always the chance of late delivery. To offset this chance, and to make the process as streamlined as possible, our manufacturer has assembled a highly reputable, dedicated team to get orders produced, packed, and shipped out as quickly as possible. Since everything is lined up and ready to go, any bumps in the road should be minimal to nonexistent.
