UPDATE: New stretch goal: $4,000! Unlocks new piercings and rewards... and funds the purchase of a laser cutter for my studio. Scroll down for the update! Thanks for your support!
Key rings can be so much more than key rings.
Hi, I'm Becky, and I spent the last 3 years in design school doing side projects and volunteering in an attempt to feel empowered in spite of the political realities happening around me. This Kickstarter isn't exactly what I have in mind when I envision radical anti-oppression futures, but this particular project has been an unexpected success. Let me explain.
I believe in surrounding ourselves with objects that express our ethics while bringing delight. This is especially true now, as so many people are confronted daily with growing, overt oppressions. Bleak.
Almost everyone carries keys with them, all the time. I saw that as an opportunity to embed some reassurance and ethics into an everyday object.
So, I designed a product that's both a keychain and a piercing. I chose a lip piercing, an earring, and a labia piercing for their connotations with femininity... and because they look sick with hoops. I chose acrylic for its colors and its 3-dimensional look when engraved. (It's also durable and lightweight.) The colors translucent orange, dark blue, and fluorescent pink won out because they have the highest contrast engravings.
I invited friends to wear and carry these keychains for months, and I was surprised by the level of interest they inspired. Because of this, I'm raising funds to share these little anti-patriarchy talismans with a larger audience.
I'll be producing them on the laser cutter and individually packing each one in a small envelope ideal for gift-giving. If you order multiples, each keychain inside its envelope will be shipped in one bubble mailer. Each key ring comes with both a silver (steel) and gold (brass) option for the jewelry (key ring).
UPDATE 11/20/2018: Stretch goal ($4,000) and new designs!
Wow, funded in 2 days! Thank you all for your support!
Now, for a new, stretch goal: if the campaign hits $4,000, backers will have 2 new options when the survey is sent: a septum (nose) piercing, and a nipple piercing. (If you’d like to follow the development of these designs, follow me on Instagram.)
But wait, there's more!
If this campaign makes it to $4,000, I'll also release a premium material: wood.
I’ve chosen the goal of $4,000 because it will allow me to invest in an important tool for my home studio: a laser cutter. If you know me, you know I use the laser cutter most often in prototyping, experimenting, and designing. Currently I commute over an hour to access a laser cutter, and I lose access to that facility in a few months.
For years it has been my dream to create a design studio where I can ethically employ people in projects that have an impact on our oh-so-flawed culture. Having a laser cutter is the next step toward that goal.
Risks and challenges
There are no minimum order quantities or esoteric supply chains for this project. I should be able to fulfill any number of orders, should the project be funded.
This item will not arrive in time for Christmas.
