Thank you for joining me in my efforts to spread the word about my writing ministry, specifically in preparation for my next book launch. Your contribution will help fund the cost of hiring a social media manager to implement a targeted promotional strategy prior to and during the launch of my upcoming book, Love Forward: Discover the Joy of Living Generously (Bethany House, April 2018).
Why a social media manager? Several reasons.
1. Social media is a key ingredient in launching a book in today's world. My publisher wants to know that I'm making a serious effort to grow my audience and promote my book, and social media is one of the primary ways I can and should do that.
2. I possess very limited time to manage social media myself. Many of you know I'm a mom, a wife, a blogger, freelance writer, and church volunteer. Writing this book requires all the time in my schedule that's not already claimed by family, church and work responsibilities. I've cut my freelance work down to a minimum and have turned away projects in order to stay on task toward my book deadline. While my girls are at school, I write. When they're home, I want to be present for them and for my husband Chad.
3. I'm not the best person for the job. I write. That's what I've been gifted and called to do. Other people manage social media because that's what they've been gifted and called to do. They know stuff I don't know. They love social media in ways I don't. So for the sake of efficiency and optimal results, let's give the right jobs to the right people.
4. I'm in this for the long haul. Your contributions will fund a minimum 12-month social media campaign designed to build my audience and reach more women with the love, grace, and wisdom of Christ. There is no magic overnight success. It's going to require steady, consistent effort just as I've been doing for the past five and a half years. I've finally reached the point - as many authors do - of admitting I cannot do it on my own. I need a team. That team includes an outsourced social media expert, and you. By contributing to this effort, YOU are a part of my team. And I'm tremendously grateful.
Risks and challenges
Risks? Well, there's carpal tunnel. Or dry eye syndrome from staring at my computer screen six to eight hours a day. And I might be in the doghouse soon for charging yet another theology resource book to my Amazon account. But really, what husband can deny his wife another theology book?
I'll tell you the risks of NOT raising enough funds to cover my pre-launch social media campaign. I'll either have to:
(A) Find another 10-20 hours a week to manage Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook myself, in which case I risk the probability of feeding my family cold cereal for dinner every night for the next two years (through this book and the next one). It's okay; Chad knows how to make hot dogs. So they'll get some variety at least.
(B) Or I risk not being able to put my writing out there as well as I should and neglecting a crucial opportunity to use social media for good, to grow my reach and generate awareness of my ministry and upcoming book, for God's glory.
The book is going to get written regardless. It's going to be published. And it will be distributed and promoted by my publisher, to a certain degree, within a certain window of time. I'm extremely grateful for that. As the author, however, I also have a responsibility and an opportunity to play a critical role in maximizing the book's reach and impact. It's my hope that thousands upon thousands of readers will hear about Love Forward, be spurred to read the book, and receive the life-changing influence of God's word. And YOU can help make that happen.
The biggest risk? Is not meeting my Kickstarter goal. Chad and I have calculated $3,000 as the minimum needed to hire an expert and supplement my pre-launch strategies. If I don't reach $3K, Kickstarter won't collect anything from you, the donors, and they won't pay out anything to me. However, if together we reach and exceed $3,000, I'm in business - and the more we collect, the more I can invest in spreading the word of my ministry and upcoming book.
