Thank you everyone - We hit our mark!!! But there still are plenty of other expenses that could use some financial relief. A mill room needs to be built. A website designed. Labels to be printed...the list is long. Any funds raised above the goal will go toward these opening expenses. You can back this project for a little as $1, and doing so will give you access to updates just for backers about special deals (including free stuff), events and status reports. Please continue to tell others about this project. The more people who know about Beck's Bakery and the breads made from locally grown grains - the better! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Hi! I’m Rhonda Wiedenbeck. Thank-you for taking the time to check out this Kickstarter project. Since making this video a few things have come up that are making this fundraising effort really important...like over $9,000 in unexpected opening expenses! Yikes! My goal has been to make sure that this bakery can produce the highest quality bread at affordable prices and having a successful Kickstarter campaign has now become even more important for achieving that goal. I hope that Beck's Bakery can be a model for what is achievable in other small towns. Please read on to find out more about Beck's Bakery and this Kickstarter project.
Beck's Bakery is a wholesale bread bakery located in the northern California town of Arcata. I'm thrilled to be introducing a product that uses sustainable and Humboldt grown ingredients, has lovely flavor and texture, and helps to support our local food economy. For years I’ve wanted to provide the community with the bread that I’ve been making for family and friends … artisan style breads made with fresh milled locally grown whole grains. My bread-making processes ensure complex aromas and layers of flavors, crunchy crusts, and toothy crumb. The wheat, rye and buckwheat grains that I will be obtaining from Humboldt, Mendocino and other northern California farmers are organic or sustainably produced, and include heritage and landrace varieties adapted to our unique climate and soils. As with wine grapes, each grain variety has its own characteristic qualities. The differences can be quite noticeable and pleasing to the taste buds!
One of the core values of Beck’s Bakery is education. I have been a cooking teacher since 2004 and have taught hundreds of people how to make artisan bread at home. Recently, I’ve been volunteering with the Eureka City Schools Central Kitchen to help the staff there develop new wholegrain breads, rolls & crackers for school lunches. I’m committed to finding alternative ways to make high-quality nutritional foods available to the community. Teaching in the community and working with schools are two ways I can do this.
I’ve been working closely with the North Coast Small Business Development Center (NCSBDC) for more than a year to figure out the nitty gritty details of this business. I’ve also been making a lot of bread for local restaurants, grocery stores, and friends to taste. And I’ve been pulling together financing. I’m happy to say that I have a viable business plan, a promising initial assortment of stores and restaurants that want to carry bread from Beck’s Bakery, and almost all of my financing. The key to producing affordable bread is to minimize my debt load as much as possible – and raising money through Kickstarter is one step in the process. I’m very close to pulling it off with the financing I have thus far.
My Kickstarter project is to raise funds to purchase a lightweight delivery trailer so that Beck’s Bakery can efficiently deliver bread to local grocery stores and restaurants. The cost of the trailer, freight to ship it, hitch, installation, ball mount, sales tax, Kickstarter and Amazon fees is: $3537. I will be paying for the cost of the pledge rewards and income taxes that will accrue with this fundraising effort. If I'm so fortunate, any extra money raised above the goal will go to pay other opening bakery expenses.
Speaking of rewards…If you don’t like the pledge rewards, feel free to suggest a reward package that fits with your budget and has the items you want to get. I’ll see what I can do to accommodate your request.
Thank you so much for donating to this Kickstarter project. If you think it is a great idea – please tell others about it and forward the info to them. The more people talking about this the better! You can check out the progress of Beck's Bakery on Facebook too!
I'm very excited to provide this delicious bread to Humboldt County residents! Thank you everyone!
Special thanks to my awesome video producer, Eric Wong!
