Fund limited-edition, handmade snowboards, designed by local artists and made in Boston!
SCROLL TO SEE UPDATED IMAGES OF ARTWORK
WE ARE... Bean Snowboards is a group of 5 friends who hand-make snowboards in a small shop in Boston, MA. We are three engineers, one graphic designer, and a marketing guy who all work day jobs to support our small business. We work nights and weekends to produce, promote, and sometimes ride the snowboards.
The last two years we have produced a very limited "Artist Series" of snowboards. We work with local artists to produce unique snowboards showcasing their design and then have a party/gallery showing to spread the word about their art and give them an opportunity to sell other works. This year we just don't have the capital to do the Artist Series so we're turning to the Kickstarter community to help us fund it.
The video below shows the artwork and manufacturing of our first ever Artist Series back in 2010. If we reach our funding minimum we can manufacture 30 snowboards, 10 of each design from three different artists. This will vary based on which boards are ordered.
We source all of our materials from inside North America. We strongly believe that supporting the US and local economy is the best thing a business can do to provide long-term sustainability.
HERE'S THE MATH... This is how we came up with the funding level: Each board is $400. The minimum number of boards we'd like to make for the artist series is 30 so 30 X 400 = $12k. If you add the costs that go to kickstarter, amazon payments, and the artists, that totals about $5k. Total = $17k.
If we get additional funding above our goal we will make up to 90 snowboards with these designs (but no more, ever), and any extra funds will be reinvested in manufacturing equipment and materials to ensure that an Artist Series can be done again next season. The artists will receive 15% of the final funding amount for their design work.
THE ARTISTS ARE...
Check out this pic from last year's Artist SeriesPledges of any kind will get you a personal invitation to our release party for the boards! Its not invite only or anything like that, but you'll get a special hug when you're there.
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS...You make a pledge. If the pledge is for one of the lower priced items (hoody, tee, high five, koozy, hat, print), we'll ship them out shortly after the funding period is over. We will make every effort to have these delivered by Christmas.
- If you purchase a board, we'll contact you when the Artists have completed the designs and send them over to you. You can pick which graphic, shape, and size you like the best and we'll put you down for one of those. In March you'll receive the board with some time left in the season to get it on snow. NOTE: Shape and size selections are limited to our normal board lineup.
- If you pledge the amount to build your own board, we'll contact you to set up a day to come down to the shop, probably in February, and we'll show you how a snowboard is made. You can do as little or as much as you want and we'll take pictures to document a memorable experience.
- If you really went big and want to design your own deck, we'll set up a time for you to sit down with our graphic designer, Scott. In reality, it'll probably take a few sit downs to get it done and a bunch of emails. Or if you are not local, we can manage it over video conference. We'd probably expect to build the board during the summer, as the creative process can take a while.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
There arent many "risks" involved with executing our project in the sense that we have all the technical know how and equipment to execute it. However, there are several challenges we face in order to complete the project.
Design collaboration is always challenging. We have to work with the artists to make sure that their work represents our brand well, as well as their own reputation. So multiple iterations of back and forth may have to occur before we come to a final product. Our goal from the outset of the artist series though was to give the artist almost free reign over the design, so it was less about us and more about them, and that certainly helps speed up the process and reduce the risk of feelings being hurt. Our previous attempts at artists series runs have so far been conflict free, but you never know.
The timeline for manufacturing the boards will also be challenging. We all work day jobs and a tremendous amount of hands-on labor goes into each board, so finding the time to make them all (especially during the holidays) may be difficult. We’re prepared to spend a ton of late nights cutting fiberglass, prepping materials, pressing boards and grinding bases, and we've tried to be honest about the delivery date for boards with this in mind. Delivery dates in March are reasonable, but the lead time will depend on how many boards are ordered. If we get enough pledges we will invest in some additional equipment to make the manufacturing process faster, and this should help get all the rewards to backers as quickly as possible.
