We're planning on opening a shop in Coeur d'Alene serving pies made with local ingredients. We can't take the next step without money for improvements on a brick-and-mortar location and equipment. We are working with a bank to obtain financing, but need help coming up with $20,000 for the down payment on a loan.
Good pies start with good ingredients. We use as many local (and often organic) ingredients as possible in our pies. Using local ingredients supports farmers and producers, keeps money in our community and makes for delicious pies. When we open the shop, we will expand our menu to include fruit pies, cream pies and savory pies. We will also have gluten free and vegan options! Our flavors change seasonally, so there is always something new to be enjoyed.
We are Ethan & Katy Bean. We started Bean & Pie in the summer of 2017 out of our home kitchen. We began selling our pies to family and friends and word quickly got out. We were both working full-time jobs and took turns baking pies all summer and fall. Come Thanksgiving, we had orders for more than 70 pies and maxed out our oven, baking for four days. It was exhausting, but so rewarding knowing customers were enjoying our pies with their families. This past summer, we sold pies at the Kootenai County Farmer's Market and Kendall Yards Night Market on Wednesdays. The support from the community since starting our business last summer has been overwhelming!
We are limited with our small home kitchen - we can't fulfill wholesale requests or offer savory and cream pies (trust me when I say we've got some amazing recipes!) We're also limited on space and production capabilities. When we do events, we have to work days in advance on prep. After all of this, baking a single batch of pies takes up to two hours. Having our own pie-bakery, with more space and commercial baking equipment, will allow us to expand our business and continue serving our community delicious pies that can be enjoyed with family and friends.
We are planning to open a shop in Coeur d'Alene. We've saved up all the money we've earned since starting our business, but it's nowhere near enough to secure financing for kitchen equipment and building costs. We've found a couple of locations, but have missed out on them since we did not have bank financing. Reaching our goal for this Kickstarter will allow us to take the next step and be ready when something opens up.
Bean & Pie's shop will be a neighborhood gathering place, where you can enjoy good company over a slice of pie and a cup of coffee, or pick-up a pie to enjoy with family and friends. With your help, we plan on opening our doors in 2019 and serving farm-to-table pies.
We'd like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who helped us with this project. Our videographer, Andrew Brand, did a fantastic job developing our story into a video - we are so grateful for your effort and support! Mary Banducci - thank you for providing beautiful images of our pies. Young & Michal Bennett from Coffee Roboto - thank you for your endless support and encouragement and willingness to be in our video. Ron Borg, thank you for being so supportive of our business, helping to get the word out and being in our video. Thank you to Kurtis, Michelle and Brandy for the kind words and being in our video.
And thank you to our family, friends and community members who have supported our dream, purchased pies, and helped us get to this point.
Risks and challenges
We've learned a lot since starting our business last summer, but we still have a long way to go! We work with a business coach every step of the way and believe in growing slowly and cautiously. There is a chance we may not find a location right away. But with your help, we will be ready with financing when the right one comes along.
We're ready to face the challenges that may come with building our own bakery, tackling permits and inspections, hiring and all of the unknown things that will come up along the way. We imagine It will be stressful at times and take a lot of work, but we believe it will be worth it!
