About this project
That’s right, and your children are right there with you. With all the metrics and tools to track and improve every aspect of our lives from fitness, to calories, even the steps we take. Shouldn’t we pay closer attention to the most important and irreplaceable part of our ENTIRE LIVES!?
The MediaBit tells you when the TV is on and how long it is on. Statistics are pushed to the MediaBit Website for you to view. You can remotely turn off the TV using a smartphone or a web browser.
Parents, you may want to influence the amount of TV or video gaming your child is playing each day or each week. The MediaBit will allow You to monitor usage through an app on your smart phone anywhere, any time. You can even program the TV to turn off according to your schedule.
Your child is smart, right? We've accounted for that. MediaBit's has a defense system, Tamper Detection! Let's say little Johnny gets wise. He figures he’ll just unplug our Orwellian device. Well the MediaBit then sends a notification to your smart phone alerting you that the HDMI cables are disconnected or power is disabled. Tough love.
Status of Design
What you see in the pictures and the video is a functioning MediaBit prototype. With a functioning design, we are now gearing up for manufacturing. We've already lined up manufacturing partners, but to make the MediaBit affordable, we have to bring the costs down by manufacturing a lot of them at once. And that's where you can help make this project a reality! Our funding goal represents the minimum amount we need to produce the first batch of MediaBits. If we are able to meet our funding goal, we will begin manufacturing and shipping the MediaBit starting in April, 2016. We are still putting the finishing touches on the Smartphone Apps and Embedded Software for the MediaBit, but we have already received Hardware prototypes that are ready to go!
The software is almost “complete,” although no piece of software is ever complete. We plan on releasing regular updates to add new features, fix bugs, etc. The last major functionality we need to create is an installation tool and additional work on our BDI Cloud.
Meet the Team
Tony Megna is an Entrepreneur, Hardware Engineer, and Avid Learner who graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a MBA from Indiana University. He has a passion for creating challenging, intuitive and beautiful products. He has always been an inventor at heart and as BDI's founder, Tony continues to play a lead role in product development. His background in Embedded Systems, Hardware Design, RF Communications, SATCOM and Systems Engineering all of which has greatly helped BDI become the company that it is today.
Matthew O'Gorman is a true jack of all trades and studied Engineering at UA Huntsville. He can build website from scratch or code up firmware for the PCB he just designed.
Bob Locklear is currently Vice President of Corporate Development at Jive Communications, a cloud VoIP provider where he executes Jive's M&A Strategy. Mr. Locklear was previously Director of Business Development and Product Management at Adtran and led the Adtran acquisition of Bluesocket, a WiFI equipment provider.
Our plan is to deliver by April, 2016. We will continue to refine and test the prototype until our Kickstarter is funded. PCB production will be done by either Seeed Studio or Sunstone Circuits and assembly will be done by Seeed Studio or Screaming Circuits. We are looking at a smaller initial run of under 1,000 for Enclosures and plan to use 3D printing to produce the enclosures (Shapeways). If demand exceeds this level we will use Injection Molding by Protomold.
- The Company Lab along with all the mentors and specialists for being part of the GIGTANK Startup Acceleration Program this summer.
- Cory and Thomas from Relik for the awesome video.
- Shawn Naquin for the awesome artwork.
- To the team at Particle, for everything that you have built and for working with us to bring this to life.
Risks and challenges
Within our experienced team, we have extensive manufacturing and operational experience and are looking forward to bringing the MediaBit to market. We have created a timeline designed to deliver MediaBit to you on schedule. However, here are what we see as the unexpected risks and challenges we may face along the way:
Manufacturing: Creating the tooling and supply chain to manufacture a product like MediaBit is challenging and takes time and expertise to get it right. We are working with experienced teams in this space. However, the possibility of delays exist related to the PCB manufacturing and assembly. We are minimizing our risks by having back up suppliers for every part of our supply chain.
Product Adjustments: As MediaBit gets closer to production, there will likely be some small changes to ensure a product of the utmost quality. These adjustments will always be to the benefit of our customers and we will be as transparent as possible with you along the way to keep you up to date on our progress.
Building the Community: Our goal is to make MediaBit the World’s go-to device for measuring media consumption. In the background, we will continue to add features to the MediaBit - especially features to make TV viewing more Interactive. Our intention is to make the hours you do spend watching TV a more robust, enjoyable experience. We plan to roll out open API and on our horizon is a platform for engaging and interactive applications. However, the MediaBit community depends on our ability to seek out and achieve partnerships with API developers. The partnerships that we have already established give us confidence the market is in need of our product, and we look forward to revolutionizing the way people watch TV.
In this tech world problems arise, but we have put together a strong and dedicated team prepared to handle anything thrown our way, and we will deliver the journey to you with as much clarity as possible.
Every cent graciously sent our way to support our mission is highly appreciated and we are grateful for each and every one of you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
