About

In December 2015, I was informed that I’d lost out on the role of Calogero for the out-of-town tryout of a new musical adaptation of A BRONX TALE (“ABT”) after almost 4 months of callbacks.

I was devastated. And felt stuck. It was my roommate at the time who convinced me to take back some personal “control” in my life, in an industry/profession where you launch yourself into a world consumed with perpetual lack of control. I spent my days working on ABT for my own personal desires to process, learn from and move on from the harrowing audition experience and to better myself as an actor and human. Not for any expectations of booking the job.

In the summer of 2016 however, something miraculous happened. The Calogero track became available again for the Broadway production, and this time, hard work and opportunity and luck all aligned. Robert De Niro, Jerry Zaks, Sergio Trujillo, Tommy Mottola, Alan Menken, and the man himself — Chazz Palminteri — all said yes to me leading their new Broadway musical as my debut at the age of 24.

That experience was a lifelong dream come true to say the least.

After my time with ABT, amongst other projects I started developing and touring a solo cabaret entitled BLAME IT ON MY YOUTH (“BIOMY”), named after the great Oscar Levant standard. Upon hearing about this, Alan Menken was very generous in bestowing onto me  “Alice”: a beautiful previously unpublished tune that he wrote as part of a failed HONEYMOONERS musical adaptation back in the 1970s. Feeling more and more secure about the material and arrangements my music director James Sampliner and I created after performing BIOMY a dozen plus times across the country, the project this year is to encapsulate the show for eternity on an album. Because of my history and friendship with Alan, and because I am the one fortunate enough to debut this Menken trunk song, we’ve released “Alice” as a single on iTunes/Spotify/Amazon Music/wherever music is sold and streamed and as a music video on YouTube. This piece is just vocals and piano. The rest of the album will feature anywhere between 1-6 instruments on each song, as they are when performed live in concert.

Why/Why Now: It memorializes a pivotal shift in my life and worldview. A time of profound education and healing through making ignorant mistakes as a young person. In love. In friendship. In business. In life. That has brought me to a mindset and understanding now that it’s not the mistakes that defines one’s life, but how that individual chooses to learn, evolve and live on from those mistakes out of brutal honesty, unconditional love and kindness. It’s a calling card for the NYC theatrical community and beyond showcasing my range and passion for an eclectic array of music that I’ve not yet had the opportunity to display in my Broadway excursions. It‘s a creative endeavor that is tangibly within my control. And I’d love to record “Blame...Youth” now at 26 before I’m too old and it becomes slightly inappropriate 😊

Risks and challenges

As this is my first venture into recording songs as myself, not as a character on a cast recording, I’ve striven to surround myself with the smartest and most talented creative minds I know to make this album as great as it can be and reach as many people as possible.
