As a photographer with a passion for shooting black and white film, access to a functioning darkroom is a must. Being able to develop film to your own standards is key when considering all the variables that go into the processes that yield expected, consistent, and archival results.
Developing film in accordance with the parameters established through testing is only the beginning. Maintaining quality control throughout the process is incredibly important for the archival preservation of film negatives to insure they'll be around long after I'm gone.
Once the film's preservation has been taken care of, the true beauty of photography is next, printing the picture. And like the negative, a series of steps must be followed to make sure that the print is crafted with archival processes as well, so that every collector that acquires one of my images may enjoy it for many decades to come.
My campaign's main goal is to raise the required funds to acquire all the necessary equipment as well as build-out the space for a fully functional darkroom, capable of printing and developing black and white photography in accordance with the archival techniques paramount for life-long, fine-art photographs.
Through the years that I've had access to such darkrooms, I've had the incredible opportunity to realize the vision of my craft and create images that have defined my life's work. I am in need of such a darkroom now and have the space to build it. But I require your help to realize this dream.
With a substantial amount of equipment already in place, most of the raised funds will be going to the completion of the required elements for the type of darkroom I require, as well as the building-out of the space. Proper ventilation as well as other safety features will be the first priority. Water filtration, both for incoming and disposal will follow, as the quality of water both in and out is of paramount importance to me.
Once those immediate concerns are satisfied, I'll address the light integrity of the space so as to be able to be up and running at any time without fear of light contamination. The remaining funds will be used to obtain the necessary materials and supplies I'll need to print future products.
My plans for the darkroom extend beyond my own projects. My dream is to be able to share the space with other photographers who've never had the thrill of watching their images "come up in the soup" as well as provide an opportunity for photographers who've lost access to this type of space over the years. As I have been blessed to have had these opportunities in my lifetime, I feel it's vitally important to return the gift. I also deeply believe in keeping these processes alive and well for generations of photographers to come.
I sincerely hope that both my imagery and the scope of this campaign speaks to you on some level. Please take a moment to look through the different rewards I have for offer. In addition to the rewards listed on the right hand side of my campaign page, below, you will find samples of the photographs you could receive for your support.
Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about my efforts, and please share freely with anyone you might feel would like to participate in my Kickstarter, and help me to realize my goal. All the best!
Risks and challenges
My biggest challenge in completing my project is the actual building of the darkroom space. Fortunately I have access to a group of trusted individuals trained in the required professions such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical. As a significant portion of my rewards already exist, I have no concerns of being able to make good on the delivery of them immediately upon the completion of my campaign, with the remaining awards that are dependent on a functioning darkroom to be shipped ASAP. With over 20 years of black and white printing experience and countless portfolios already produced, I am very confident that the rewards that I'll need to create will meet or exceed my supporters expectations.
As I'll be completely dedicated to the process of my campaign, I'll be able to answer any questions my supporters have. I feel communication is paramount in a venture such as this and will be at the ready to discuss any concerns my supporters have regarding this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
