About

Action Scientists Versus Atom-Spawned Giant Monsters!

The Allied bombing of Ninoshima island in Japan in August, 1945, opened up an enormous entrance into the Hollow Earth, and from that entrance came the first of a series of skyscraper-sized monsters to plague the world over the next two decades. Fortunately for humanity, a group of action scientists, the Explorers of the Fantastic, rose up to oppose them and to explore the Hollow Earth, the floors of the seven seas, and the depths of outer space. In Explorers of the Fantastic, you create and play these scientists, fighting against the giant monsters and against more human opponents.

Your group, the Explorers of the Fantastic, has members from around the world and imitators in most countries. That’s a good thing, because your opponents are many: giant monsters from the Hollow Earth, giant monsters bred deliberately or accidentally by mad scientists, spies from the KGB or China who are intent on using the giant monsters against the forces of freedom, aliens intent on invading and conquering Earth, and opportunists selling giant monster body parts and illegal technology on the global black market.

It’s up to you to defend the free world against all those who would disrupt and destroy it, whether they are giant monsters, aliens, or humans—and in doing so spread liberty and democracy around the world and across the universe!

In this book, you’ll find:

  • Rules, based on the Savage Worlds Adventure Edition ruleset, for creating your heroic action scientists and equipping them with the highest of high tech—even their own personal vehicles.
  • Rules for creating new giant monsters, either for the player characters to fight against or for the players to run.
  • Rules for creating individual vehicles for player characters, from flying mini-subs to rocketships.
  • New Savage Worlds races (Intelligent Apes! Emancipated Robots!) and character concepts (Giant Monster Expert! Science Police! Super Scientist!).
  • A complete alternate history, incorporating giant monsters, super scientists, the Explorers of the Fantastic organization, alien invasions, and other Atomic Age and Silver Age fun.
  • And of course fully statted-up giant monsters for the players to fight against, ranging from Tokabiru, King of the Monsters, to his arch-enemy Emperor Misery, and from the Amoeba That Wouldn’t Die to Man-Tis, the Insect That Walked Like A Man!

What will these funds be used for?
The funds will be used to pay authors, artists, printing and layout. These things will be paid out immediately on the receipt of funds from Kickstarter. Additionally, Kickstarter takes about 10% of whatever total we amass as fees.

STRETCH GOALS

We are very excited about doing stretch goals for this one. Explorers of the Fantastic is an awesome setting with tons of interesting partners providing additional scenarios for us! Plus, at $31k we'll be able to turn this project full-color! Check these out:

$27, 000 - Bill Keyes: The Sea Exploration Action Laboratory! SEAL is a multi-national consortium of brilliant scientists, engineers, and explorers gathered together to monitor the dreadful Great Pacific Rift and the monstrous creatures that far too often emerge from it. Led by Dr. Malcolm Integer and the Integer family—dear friends and colleagues of the Explorers of the Fantastic themselves—the scientists of SEAL use high-tech gear, cutting-edge science, and two-fisted ingenuity to explore the mysteries of the deep and protect humanity from threats too fantastic to be believed.

Bill Keyes (also known as "teh bunneh" for reasons we are unable to explain) has worked as the layout designer and art director  for Hero Games, High Rock Publishing, Dire Corgi Games, AAW, and Evil Beagle Games. His first book, The Widening Gyre, introduced a world of steampunk and sorcery. Since then, he has written for Torg: Eternity, Warhammer 40,000: Wrath & Glory, and his own series of short game supplements known as The Cities of Wonder.

$29,000 - Sara Farb Martinez: Play the game of cat and mouse! Giant cat-like monsters, created by a Soviet scientist to stop an infestation of lab-grown giant mice gone rogue, have been rampaging across the Soviet countryside, and the Soviets have been helpless to stop them. So the Kremlin has covertly reached out to the Explorers of the Fantastic for help. Can the Explorers clandestinely make their way through the USSR, locate the den of the cat monsters, and put an end to them before the cats reach Europe?

Sara Martinez lives in Denver, CO and spends most of her time chasing after her two toddlers. When she can spare the time, she loves to play, run and write Savage Worlds adventures. She is the author of Killer Chops, published by Fabled Environments and the creator of the East Texas University living campaign Class of 2019: The Corvus Conspiracy.

$31,000 - Full Color Art!: At this level we'll be able to produce the Explorers book with fabulous full-color art by our astonishing crew!

$33,000 - Jesse Scoble and Devinder Thiara: The Explorers of the Fantastic have been to space several times, and made it as far as the tenth planet, Planet X! But much to their surprise, each time the Explorers traveled into space, they found more and more beings from Earth in high orbit—and not all of those beings were human! Who sent the dogs and chimpanzees and cats into space—and why?

Jesse Scoble is a writer, game designer, and story editor. He currently works at Ubisoft Montreal, and wrote for Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Far Cry 5, Assassin's Creed: Origins, and Watch Dogs 2. Previously he was Creative Design Lead on Wizard101; a designer at Webkinz; a community writer for City of Heroes; and has also contributed to more than 30 RPG books and related anthologies. He makes a mean mojito. Find him on twitter: @jscoble

Devinder Thiara is a writer, editor and business analyst whose credits include Modiphius’ Conan RPG Line and John Carter of Mars: Prince of Helium. These days he spends his time on freelance writing/editing projects and working on a book about personal finance between gigs as a business analyst.

$35,000 - Ken Spencer: You are following the trail of a mad scientist who is trying to awaken a specific series of kaiju in a specific order,  with the hope that this will set up a chain reaction that can awaken the largest kaiju ever seen! Our heroes must chase the clues from one Pacific Island to another, dealing with the mad scientist’s nefarious henchmen, the strange creatures that have awakened on these islands, and more.

Ken Spencer is an archaeologist and award winning freelance RPG and fiction writer most well known for Rocket Age (Why Not Games), Northlands Saga (Frog God Games), and Adventures in Middle-Earth (Cubicle 7), as well as other work for Alephtar Games, Chaosium, Gun Metal Games, and Steve Jackson Games. When not writing about ancient ruins and horrid mysteries he is hiking or exploring ancient ruins and horrid mysteries. You can find out more about Ken at http://kennethspencer.weebly.com or his tabletop game company at www.whynotgames.com

$37,000 - Jaym Gates: From out of the past…El Dorado! The legendary city of gold has been sought after by many, but never found—until now. One woman has learned to track El Dorado—has seen it—has touched its very walls! But what fantastic—and horrible?—secrets does El Dorado hide???

Jaym Gates is an editor, author, project manager, and game designer. Her design has been informed by South American New Weird, classic fantasy, and cutting-edge futurism. You can find out more about her at jaymgates.com, or on Twitter as @JaymGates.

$39,000 - Satyros Phil Brucato: Project Argent. From out of Dimension Q they step: strange giant monsters whose intellects match their size and power! Their goal: purge the world of the plague of humanity and establish dominion in our ashes. Only one group is in position to oppose them: Project ARGENT, a group of psychic scientists who, under the aegis of the ARGENT corporation, explore strange vistas and far dimensions. But the scientists of Project ARGENT are mad criminals—it’s just that the giant monsters of Dimension Q are worse. One thing is for sure: no matter who wins, we all lose!

Satyros Phil Brucato (he / they), aka Satyr, has been publishing professionally in various media since 1989 and is best-known to gamers as the co-creator of Mage: The Ascension as well as Deliria and Powerchords. Although they keep a low in-person profile, you can find out more about Satyr and their work at: https://satyrosphilbrucato.wordpress.com/ and https://www.patreon.com/philbrucato

$41,000 - Mike Surbrook: Stuck in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth are a set of decaying vehicles, put there by the Nazis during the 1940s in a series of secret launches. They were manned—were. Now they are…something else. What horrifying secrets do these vehicles hold, and who—or what—prowls their halls?

Michael Surbrook has been developing content for the gaming industry since 1999, when he released Kazei 5. Since then he’s product material for a number of systems and companies. You should look him up on DrivethrRPG and buy some of it.

$43,000 - Joel Sparks: The Spondron Mystery!  When a group of foes turns out to possess an unknown energy source, the PCs are tasked with tracking down its origin. Such technology falling into the wrong hands could tip the global balance of power in favor of the Communists. However, should the Explorers Society discover the secret of the “spondrons,” it could mean a new age of perpetual motion, technological superiority, and triumph for the West.

Joel Sparks (“Mister Joel”) is the creator of the shockingly popular CATS OF CATTHULHU RPG, now up to three volumes. His gamesmithing credits extend back through old school fantasy and include work for Steve Jackson Games, Savage Mojo, John Wick Presents, and Faster Monkey Games. Horrifying cuteness and sporadic revelations from the beyond appear via CATTHULHU.com.

$45,000 - Chris Halliday: When handsome physicist Dr Kirk Angstrom is hideously burned in a freak reactor accident, only his brain can be saved. Trapped in a bubbling vat of chemicals, kept alive by sophisticated technology, Kirk Angstrom’s magnificent brain goes mad, vowing vengeance on all creation. When a clumsy lab tech drops an experimental isotope in Angstrom’s tank, his brain absorbs the radiation, growing to a enormous size and developing terrible psychokinetic powers. Can our heroes restore Angstrom’s sanity and avert tragedy? Will the entire world bow down before…the revenge of the atomic brain!

Chris Halliday has held many jobs, from shaving corpses in Coventry to running a law office in Massachusetts. If you buy him a drink, he’ll tell you all about them. If you buy him another drink, he’ll stop. In what he laughingly calls his spare time he writes short stories designed to transplant the weirdness in his brain from his skull to yours, and games (The Dinosaur Protocol and Pulp Fantastic, with Jonathan M. Thompson). He lives in Bristol, England, with a ridiculously huge library and more toy Daleks than a grown man should own. He really hates talking about himself in the third person

Shipping the Rewards

Shipping is not included in the pledge levels. That's because for this Kickstarter campaign, we're going to send out surveys and collect shipping fees through a pledgemanager once we're ready to ship out all physical rewards. This not only means all funds raised in the Kickstarter are going towards covering the costs of production, but it gives us plenty of time to source the best and least expensive international shipping options to Europe and Asia. The cost of production includes author payments, artist payments, layout, and printing. Thanks for being understanding! We know that for some it's much easier just to take care of the total costs all at once upon pledging, but we hope you'll see that this approach is not only better for the project but affords you the lowest shipping costs when the time comes.

Risks and challenges

The estimated delivery date is intended to serve as our hope as to when you will receive rewards. Setbacks are possible with any project. Like other projects of this type, this project is not without risks. Delays can happen, as we are only human. We will keep in contact with you concerning potential delays and such. Each of the creators has done several successful projects with Kickstarter before. The biggest possible risk of delay will come from any stretch goals that we may include.
