About

Beginnings

I had a really close friend that I had known since college enter the Navy and serve overseas for a few years before returning stateside. During college he had been a perpetual source of humor and silliness to me and all those around him. During his 2nd year of his tour, I asked him to be the best man at my wedding and he bent heaven and earth to make it. He was the life of the party always filled with joy and constantly cracking jokes about dendro necrophilia (sex with trees). Fast forward to 2015 and I get what I thought was going to be the last call from him. I had gotten these calls in the middle of the night before, but this was different. One of his only friends had taken his own life and he finally felt this was it for him too. I cannot tell you how much this tears you up inside to be powerless to help someone you hold dear. I cannot even begin to understand his pain and couldn’t possibly relate. As we talked through it, we started to tell each other stories which proceeded to delve further and further into ridiculousness. After a few hours I realized that we had moved past the storm, but I was left worried how long it would be before it happened that last time. To help my friend find purpose and reconnect with the world he left we started working on a game that would help people like him tell silly stories to take them out of their dark place by having them focus on the fun and funny things in life.  Thus War Stories: The Game was born.

Making a Game

Never in a million years would I have guessed that we would be making a card game. Our game nights usually revolve around playing Cards Against Humanity, Crabs Adjust Humidity, Apples to Apples, Super Fight, and other games. We always felt that there was something missing from those games as our games usually devolved into crazy explanations as to why we chose to play the cards we did. So we focused on the storytelling aspects that we loved and created a game that allows players to quickly make up stories to score points. We then brought on a few designers to help layout the cards and begin working on creating an art style that fit the game. My friend used his crazy (and sometimes dark) sense of humor to add flavor text to each of the cards to "set the mood" for each one.  After a few short weeks we had the first cards to play with. We spent hours printing, cutting, playing, and then repeating all that over again. Out of all of that effort came our first Founders Edition deck.

The Game

The game is made up of 5 card types that all work together to make telling stories both challenging and fun.  The card types are as follows:

Playing the Game

Starting with the Commander & Chief, each player places a character card (hero, villain, god, etc) on the table. Once all of the characters have been placed, each player (starting with the Commander & Chief) places either an equipment card onto a character or scenario card on the location. Each player will then have 1 minute to use the cards on the table to create the best possible story they can come up with. The other players then vote to determine if you earned all the points from your story. Whoever has the most points at the end of the round wins and the role of Commander & Chief moves on to the next person.

Each type of card adds a little more flavor to the game. Some cards you have to use in your stories, like the locations and scenarios. While using the other cards, heroes, villains, and equipment are entirely up to you. The more cards that you can use in your story, the more points you will earn. Be careful though, your opponents get a chance to veto your use of a card after you tell your story.

This is a COMPETITIVE Storytelling Game

This is competitive storytelling, so there will be tournaments.  Big ones. Judged by famous and sometimes infamous people. We want to make the competitive parts of the game just as fun as normal play, so we added rules to host tournaments. The Commander & Chief is replaced by a judge and there are only 5 rounds of play, but everything else remains the same. We will also host contests via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube for the best 1 minute story based on cards we choose each week. The winner will then get the chance to voice over an animated or live action version of their story.

Social Media

To help get the word out, there are some social media goals that we would love your help with. The more people that follow us, the more stuff we give away. Our goals are:

Social Media Links:

The Greater Good

One of our core goals with this game is to be able to create something that veterans, their families, and friends can use to reconnect after they return home. As part of this goal we are seeking professionals who treat PTSD to help us find the best cards and topics that can be included in our game to provide the best experience for those with PTSD. We will be constantly working to refine this version of the game and it will always be produced and distributed for free.

The Team

Our team is made up of a bunch of crazies and weirdos that love a challenge and have no fear. Most of us are based here in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but a few are spread around the country. Here is the roll call list at the asylum:

Aaron Welch - Co-creator, Not a Designer, and Chief of Getting Stuff Done

Regan Deason - Co-creator, Ex Navy Grunt, and Wanna Be Standup Comic

Steven Crane - Feven!, Resident Rules Guru, and Keeper of the Cards

Zach Dugger - Resident Pen Jockey, Lead Designer, and Fairy Princess

Jen Farley - Fiverr Epic Artist Extraordinaire, Cute Character Maker, and Secret Evil Villain

Eddie Mercado - Operations Guy, Customer Service Manager, and Chief Ass Kicker

Alex Kuhne - Resident Spielberg, Video Guru, and Motion Graphics Guy

Lucy Stephenson - Den Mother, Voice of Reason, and Brings Balance to the Force

Risks and challenges

As will all things, there are some risks with this project. We have secured 2 different printing companies for the cards and 2 different manufacturers for the tokens and boxes to ensure that we will be able to deliver the rewards according to our time table listed in the campaign. However, there could be unforeseen delays in the overseas shipping due to customs, weather, or other factors.

We are also using a third party to package and ship the rewards as they arrive into the warehouse. Given the volume of items and packages, there could be shipping errors, but we will work with them to keep this as minimal as is possible.

Finally there is always the chance that a meteor strikes, the apocalypse happens, or Skynet emerges. In the event that any of these happen, we will be right there with all you awesome people trying to rebuild and play our game.
